The movie overall was okay, only reason we rented the movie was because we were having movie night and the kids decided to have shark week.

Movie can be changed to English so don't let the Spanish version scare you away. Great 4K picture quality.

I guess they had to call it something.

I'm not really sure why they called it The Shallows. Most of the action does take place within sight of the shore, but it's not taking place in waist deep water like the cover implies. The aesthetic of The Shallows is definitely inspired by real encounters with sharks posted on Youtube, but it's still got a couple of moments that could have come out of Deep Blue Sea. I'll handwave one of them because the buildup was so good. Not knocking Deep Blue Sea, I like that movie a lot, but it's a different kind of shark movie, so to see that kind of exaggerated hyper-realism show up in this film is a bit jarring.

Luckily, most of the movie takes a naturalistic approach to the proceedings, with the only touches of whimsy coming from the main character's video chat convos appearing as an inset shimmering on the corner of the screen. This isn't a found footage movie, although there are found footage elements incorporated into it, but it does have - for the most part - a sense that this could actually happen to someone.

The plot is pretty well explained in the tag line. Blake Lively's character seeks out a secret beach where her late mother went surfing as a way to connect to her memory. What she doesn't know is that there is a carcass in the area, and that carcass has attracted a great white shark. Needless to say, she finds out, and the rest of the movie is a race against time, as she is trapped on a tidal island by the shark and has to figure out a way to get to safety. The cinematography and CGI (barring one ridiculous incident with a flare gun) is outstanding. A particularly beautiful moment which is also a plot point involves bio-luminescent jellyfish. I think this movie shows signs of what serious man-versus-nature horror movies could become in a post-Sharknado landscape. When people are posting their real close encounters online, the best fictional approach may be to embrace naturalism and frame it in a story about the struggle to live.

I love sharks. They're my favorite animals and I find them fascinating. But shark attacks are very rare, and when they do occur, they rarely result in death. Bull sharks are usually the culprits, mistaking people for other kinds of prey. So if this movie was trying to be realistic, which it is most certainly NOT, the shark would probably have no interest in a human and would, in fact, be more cautious of you than you would be of it. And that would make for a very boring movie indeed. What The Shallows does well is it brings back the thrill of movies like Jaws. It thrives on our imagination, showing a little here and there; just enough to make you think twice about going in the water, even though you know it's fiction. Jaws is fun because it's fake, but it has just enough truth to put beach-goers on edge whenever they step into the water. The Shallows is big dumb summer fun and that's why I love it. The shark is fully CGI but it looks incredible. Big and mean. It looks like a movie monster, because that's what it is supposed to be. All these reviewers firing off about how unrealistic this movie is and how sharks get a bad rap are just not understanding the point. THIS ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE REAL! It's a stupid good time with a scantily clad Blake Lively getting wet and bloody. The cinematography is absolutely amazing, filmed on Australia's gold coast. The use of color is artsy and vibrant. And like many have pointed out, the seagull steals the show. I don't know how they got a real seagull to act, but they did it, and I'm looking forward to seeing his next movie! My only complaint is that the movie is pretty short. But maybe I feel that way because there just aren't enough good shark movies these days. I would have liked to see more shark action. The movie scrapes by with a PG-13 rating, but it's pretty gruesome and I didn't feel that an R rating would have necessarily made it better. Blake is a one woman show and I think she did a fine job with the script she was given. 5 stars for making us afraid to go back in the water.

Beautiful girl in a bikini goes out to surf by herself at dusk and swims TOWARD a dead whale.
Guess the good (almost) doctor has never watched shark week? LOL
Was not 100% horrible but was all in all boring and not scary at all.
This is coming from someone who has seen Jaws a dozen times and STILL jumps and screams.
