The Sinner Netflix Season 1 cast

In The Sinner season three, Detective Harry Ambrose was once again tasked with investigating a case that quickly spiralled into a dark and brooding affair, such is the nature of the show.

But now that's been and gone, are there plans to bring it back for round four? And what will the next chapter entail?

Here's everything you need to know about The Sinner season four.

The Sinner season 4 release date: When will it air?

It's good and bad news, for Sinner addicts.

The Sinner will be returning for season four, with USA Network President Chris McCumber saying that the series "has struck a chord with audiences with its signature 'whydunnit' style".

As for when we can expect it to arrive, season three landed on USA Network in the US in February 2020, before hitting UK screens on Netflix in June.

Pullman gave GQ a season four scheduling update. "That's still in the works, and now probably more than ever because of all this production that got arrested and isn’t happening.

"They probably already would have started in the writers room, and they can't [because of the coronavirus]. All those things are still in play, but there's a lot of ambiguity about a lot of things, and that's one of them."

Thankfully, that ambiguity is over – season four will premiere on Wednesday, October 13 on USA. Expect a UK airing a few months after that.

And it sounds like the shoot was a lot of fun, despite the circumstances.

"I felt really lucky to walk out of the pandemic and onto this set. I felt enormously grateful that a show of this kind of pedigree, with this kind of cast," new cast member Michael Mosley said (via TVFanatic).

"Frances Fisher is great. She will not stop talking about Titanic. That's all she wants to talk about. No, I'm just kidding. And Neal, Neal Huff, he's like, 'To Kill a Mockingbird, the most successful Broadway show of all time, yadda, yadda, yadda.' I'm like, 'Okay. We get it, Neal.'"

"Everybody was so good and so much fun. Sometimes I've found when you're doing this heavier stuff, it's really important that when they call cut, and when everybody feels like they've done their job, and when everybody feels good, then it's good to kind of ... Everybody busts balls and lightens the mood, and we keep it light."

Now the bad news. It's been officially confirmed (via Deadline) that this will be The Sinner's final season.

"It’s been a huge pleasure and a privilege to be able to tell the kind of stories we have on The Sinner these past four seasons," creator Derek Simonds said. "UCP and USA have been ideal partners and continually supportive of our creative goals, and I’m so pleased to complete Harry Ambrose’s dramatic series-long arc as we intended in this final season."

"A huge thank you to my partner-in-crime, Bill Pullman, and to the talented actors, writers, directors, and crew who gave their all to help realize this show. It’s been an incredible journey."

The Sinner season 4 cast: Who's in it?

The Sinner has roped in a number of well-respected actors across its three seasons, including Carrie Coon, Chris Messina and Jessica Biel, who continues to play a central role behind the scenes as executive producer.

"She's phenomenal," season three star Matt Bomer said of Biel at the premiere (via Variety). "She was there from the get-go, before this even started.

"I always say there should be like a Sinner support group for everybody who has had to play the sinner because you can't really understand it unless you've had to do it. It's that dark. And [Biel] has, and she was always there for me to lean on... She's a great boss."

The Sinner

But they've all been and gone, with Bill Pullman as detective Harry Ambrose the only character to appear in all three seasons to date.

Pullman has seen Ambrose evolve over the course of those three seasons. "In the second season, there was his inability to contain his anger as he risks being more vulnerable to other people. He's trying to keep himself from going off of the rails," the actor told GQ.

"In the third, he's up against this person who has said, 'you're a lot like me, Harry Ambrose, in more ways than you're willing to admit. You're angry and you're going to act out on that,' and somehow that is being unlocked in that relationship with Jamie makes things very dangerous, because there's a sense that violence is going to come out."

That has some pretty clear serious repercussions for season four. But you can expect Pullman's subtle performance style to continue, even as those layers of violence potentially bubble to the surface.

"A recurring series does give incredible permission to recognise that there is so much more that can be seen, even when you're not talking, you know?" Pullman told the New York Times.

"I was just talking to [show runner] Derek [Simmons] about that. I said to him, 'There seem to be a lot of people who enjoy not being told things verbally but sensing them in the stretches of silence.' Choosing takes is a matter of deciding when the subtext is enough. But the subtext is not just one colour. Sometimes it's the opposite, in the same moment."

Could fans see a return for Biel in front of the camera, as Ambrose's arc continues to develop?

Chatting to Variety, Biel said that they "did talk a lot about does Cora come back for season two", adding: "But we just couldn't do it this particular season."

And that's the way it's stayed ever since.

As for the rest of the cast, get ready to meet a brand-new lineup.

Alice Kremelberg (The Trial Of the Chicago 7) was the first officially announced addition to the cast. According to Deadline, she'll play "Percy Muldoon, a tough and charismatic young woman born into a prominent fishing family on Deer Island in Northern Maine. Having excelled in the largely male world of lobster fishing, Percy's even-keeled demeanor is forever altered by a horrific tragedy that throws her life off course."

Recent announcements (via Deadline) also include Michael Mosley, playing "Colin Muldoon, a rugged lobsterman and the devoted son of Meg Muldoon. Colin helped raise his niece, Percy (Alice Kremelberg), and will do anything to protect his family."

You'll probably recognise Mosley from Ozark (if you don't, get binging while you wait for The Sinner to return) where he played Pastor Mason Young.

According to Variety, Frances Fisher will also be appearing, as 'island matriarch Meg Muldoon'.

Also joining the cast, Cindy Cheung (The Flight Attendant), Ronin Wong (The Man in the High Castle) and Neal Huff (Mare of Easttown).

Cheung will play Stephanie Lam, who is fiercely protective of her son, who becomes embroiled in a local mystery.

Wong will portray Mike Lam, a restaurateur who runs a local place with his wife Stephanie. He has been a local for many years, but despite that, the other residents do not always make him feel at home.

Huff plays a lobsterman with a heart of gold who works for his family business.

David Huynh will play CJ Lam, the son of Mike and Stephanie. He wants to support his parents and their businesses on the island but also longs to have a life of his own on the mainland.

The Sinner season 4 plot: What will happen?

Given its anthology format, every season of The Sinner tackles a fresh mystery.

Season one was all about Biel's Cora Tannetti, digging into her backstory to understand what compelled her to stab a man to death.

Season two focused on 13-year-old Julian Walker, who apparently murdered his parents in a motel room.

Season three kicked off with a tragic car accident, which spiralled into something much more sinister.

As for season four, USA Network's McCumber says: "In season four, we're excited to dig even deeper into the psyche of Bill Pullman's beloved Detective Ambrose character, while introducing our audience to a compelling, completely new mystery."

According to Deadline, the story will see Ambrose getting involved in an investigation while on holiday. It never rains but it pours!

"In Season 4, still reeling from the trauma of a previous case a year ago, the now-retired Harry Ambrose (Pullman) travels to Hanover Island in Northern Maine for a recuperative getaway with his partner, Sonya (Jessica Hecht).

"When an unexpected tragedy occurs involving the daughter of a prominent island family, Ambrose is recruited to help the investigation, only to be thrown into a mystery of mounting paranoia that will turn this sleepy tourist island, and Ambrose’s life, upside down."

Micheal Mosley has revealed some further details about his character (via TVFanatic).

"Colin is a lobster fisherman who lives on an island off the coast of Maine. He lives by himself, but he's in a tight tribe with his brother and his niece, and his mother."

"His dad was a lobster fisherman. His dad's dad was a lobster fisherman. This is what they do, and this is what they know. And they work hard and drink hard. But when we meet Colin in this show, he's in recovery, and he's no longer drinking. He's in AA."

"But he's kind of traded the bottle for the Bible. So there's a bit of a sanctimonious kind of pressure he puts on those around him, now that he's found the light."

"I'm not much like Colin, but as far as those hard-asses, 1,000-yard stare kind of guys, I think I grew up with guys like that. They all went off to work at John Deere and whatnot, and I went and put on makeup now for a living. So I'm a little different, as you can imagine. But I just kind of know that those guys. Few words, quick to anger, those kinds of guys."

Despite the fact he’s found the humanity in Colin, it sounds like Mosley’s distancing himself from his character - does that mean he’s playing a good guy, or a bad guy?

"A bad guy doesn't think he's bad. He's got a motive and an objective, just like anybody else. So I don't ever want to be twisting a mustache or anything unless I'm in a cartoon version, or unless I'm in something that you're supposed to do that. But when it comes to something that's based in reality, I don't ever really want people to know what I'm thinking."

Good answer.
