Yellowstone National Park is one of America's biggest attractions, featuring seemingly endless forest land, mountains, hot springs and geysers. Unless you are driving, getting to one of the entrances to Yellowstone can be challenging, since there are no public transportation options very close by. If you want to travel to Yellowstone by train, the closest you can get is Salt Lake City via Amtrak train. Shuttle service from the train will then get you to the western entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

Step 1

Locate your nearest Amtrak (amtrak.com) station. No matter where you are in the country, you can get to Salt Lake City, Utah, on Amtrak, although it might take two or three train transfers.

Step 2

Book your Amtrak ticket to Salt Lake City on the California Zephyr, the only route that travels there. If your Amtrak station is not on that route, you can still book it as your final destination. Amtrak will route you through a city that is on the California Zephyr route toward Salt Lake City.

Step 3

Choose your seat or room accommodations. All Amtrak trains offer comfortable coach seating with large windows for viewing. Reserved coach seats are available on trains with upper-level seating. For long-distance routes, private rooms are available with convertible beds. The largest rooms include a private shower and toilet. All room accommodations also come with full meals, fresh towels and personal services.

Step 4

Reserve a Salt Lake Express Shuttle (saltlakeexpress.com) to take you from Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone, Montana. The shuttle runs once a day and the trip takes about eight to nine hours. All California Zephyr trains are scheduled to arrive in Salt Lake City with enough time to catch the daily shuttle. From West Yellowstone you can access the west end of Yellowstone National Park.
