VW alternator pulley removal without tool

removing the alternator?

The dealer is quoting me a ridiculus $240 to replace the alternator pulley. How long should it realistically take, and can it be done with the alternator still installed?

Thanks,

Pete

Reason why they are quoting you that is because of their dumb belief it needs to be put into service position (which btw takes 20 minutes for a good tech). Find a good indy to do the job using the instructions that don't require the service position.

Pete,

I paid 105 for my pulley and bought the metalnerd tool. I did the replacement with the alternator in the car and it took about an hour.

If you are willing to drive to Oshkosh I will do the work for a 12 pack of good beer.

I almost bought the tool, but the tool maker could not guarantee it would work on the longitudinal engine of the passat, so I removed the alterntor.
While it was out, I measured the brushes to gage life expectancy, which was good for quite a while. So that is one benefit of removal.

I sent the OP a PM with a detailed description how to remove the alternator from the car without pulling the clip on 1/22/13. Maybe he didn't read it? Removing the pulley is a no brainer if you have the "tool" and can be done in the car, but it's easier to do this with the alternator on a bench vise.

Are alternator pulleys pressed on?

There are two main types of alternator pulleys, which are either pressed on or secured by a nut and a lock washer. To remove a pressed-on pulley, a puller set is required. The tool needed for most other alternator pulley removal is a pneumatic or electric air gun.
