Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) must possess the minimum of a Masters degree, meet requirements for either graduate-level coursework (225 hours) or college-level teaching and research in behavior analysis, meet experience requirements, and pass the Behavior Analyst Certification Examination.

Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBA) must have at least a Bachelors degree, meet requirements for coursework in behavior analysis (135 hours), meet experience requirements, and pass the Assistant Behavior Analyst Certification Examination.

While certification does not guarantee competence, it identifies the minimal standards which should be met by practitioners who describe themselves as "behavior analysts" or state that they provide "behavioral intervention", "behavior modification", "functional analyses" or other types of intervention based on the principles of behavior analysis.

The BCBA certification is an increasingly recognized credential. This certification is recognized by the State of California, Department of Developmental Disabilities with regards to practitioners who provide behavioral services. In addition, an increasing number of regional centers and school administrators are stipulating that those who provide behavioral intervention to their consumers and students must hold this certification.

Both BCBAs and BCaBAs must complete continuing education units (CEUs) in order to maintain their certification by staying informed of recent developments in behavioral research and practice. CEUs for these certifications are available at the CalABA Conference.

The Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) is a graduate-level certification in behavior analysis. Professionals certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who provide behavior-analytic services.

BCBAs may supervise the work of Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts® (BCaBAs®), Registered Behavior Technicians® (RBTs®), and other professionals who implement behavior-analytic interventions.

Overview of BCBA Requirements

BCBAs with doctoral or postdoctoral training in behavior analysis may apply for the designation of Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral® (BCBA-D®). The BCBA-D designation is not a separate certification and does not grant any privileges beyond BCBA certification. If you hold the BCBA-D designation, you may function in the same capacity as a BCBA (i.e., as an independent practitioner who provides behavior-analytic services) and must meet all BCBA maintenance requirements as defined in the BCBA Handbook.

Information that pertains to BCBAs also pertains to BCBA-Ds (e.g., supervision qualifications, requirements).

If you are currently certified as a BCBA and wish to apply for the BCBA-Designation, you must complete the following application, provide all required supplemental documentation, and pay the application fee. Applications are accepted on a continual basis.

What are two levels created by the BACB?

The BACB currently offers certification for behavior analysts at two levels: Board Certified Behavior Analyst^® (BCBA^®) and Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst^® (BCABA^®)*.

Which of the following is one of the requirements to obtain the RBT credential?

To obtain an RBT credential from the BACB, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a minimum of a high school diploma or national equivalent, complete a criminal background check, pass the RBT Competency Assessment, undergo at least 40 hours of training and pass the RBT exam.

How many face to face meetings must occur per month between the RBT and the supervisor?

Each RBT must obtain ongoing supervision for a minimum of 5% of the hours spent providing applied behavior-analytic services per month. Supervision must include at least 2 face-to-face, synchronous contacts per month, during at least one of which the supervisor observes the RBT providing services.
