Acts chapter 2 gives us a glimpse of the church right after Jesus ascended to heaven.

He told them to wait together in Jerusalem for the promise of His Father, the Holy Spirit.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:1, 4).

This group of believers was “all together in one place” and “all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” (emphasis mine).
That’s unity – everyone together, unified, on the same page, with the same purpose.
Notice as well that these people experienced God together in ways that none of them had ever experienced before.
Later in Acts chapter 2 (verses 42-47), this same group of believers (who were now Spirit-filled) “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayer” (Acts 2:42). As they were together, they had “everything in common” and even “sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need” (verses 44-45). Because of the strong unity among them, they witnessed signs and miracles. They ate together, went to the temple together, met in homes together, and enjoyed favor and happiness (verses 46-47). And best of all:

Their unity continued to grow (verse 47), They took care of one another, pursued God together, and enjoyed each other.
This is a beautiful story of unity in the Bible and it’s something that churches today should strive for as well.

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had” (Acts 4:32).

2. THE PRODIGAL SON

There was a very rich person. He had two sons. The first son was hard working. He always obeyed his father. He was a very good and nice person. But the second son was different from the first son.

He was lazy. He did not work in his father’s field. He was disobedient to his father.
He wanted to lead a gay and free life.
One day, the younger son said to his father. “Father, give me my share of the property.” The father felt very sad. He divided the property.

The second son took his share of the property. He left home with his share. He went to a distant land. There he made a lot of friends. He spent his property lavishly on his friends, food, and drinks. He had many bad habits too.

He wasted all the money. Soon he was left with no money. His friends saw this. They all deserted him one by one.

At that time, there was a famine in that land. He could not get any job. None of his friends gave him food or money. He was forced to take up a very meaningful job. His job was to feed the pigs. Very often he ate the food kept for the pigs. He was very sad about his present condition.

He soon began to think of his father and his brother. He said to himself, “In my father’s house, even the servants have enough food. They get good shelter too. But here, I am struggling for food and shelter. I will go back to my father. I will beg him to take me as his servant.”

So decided, the prodigal son set out for his father’s house.

In the meantime, his father was always thinking of his second son.
He would sit near the windows. He would look out at the road, expecting his son to return home.

One day his father saw his son coming at a distance. He ran out of his house in great joy. He met his son on the way.

His son knelt. He said, “Father, I am not fit to be your son.
Take me as your servant.”
His father lifted his lovingly.
He embraced him. He turned to his servants. He said, “Bring the best robe. Put it on my son.
Put a ring on his fingers and shoes on his feet.
Kill the fatted calf. Prepare a feast. Let us eat and enjoy. My son was lost.
Now he is the fount.”

The elder son was returning from his work. He heard the sound of the music and dancing from his house. He asked one of his servants about it.

His servant told him, “Your brother has come. Your father is rejoicing at his return.
A fatted calf has been killed to prepare for a delicious feast and celebration.

The first son was angry and he refused to enter his house.
The father came out and begged his elder son to come in for rejoicing.

The elder son said, “I have obeyed you all these years.
I have done all your works. But you never gave me even a kid to enjoy with my friends. This son wasted all your money and property, And you order a fatted calf for him!”

His father replied, “My dear son, you are always with me, All my property is yours.

Your younger brother was dead, Now he is alive. He was lost. Now he is found. Therefore should we not rejoice?”
The elder son understood the love behind the words of his father.
He forgot everything about his younger brother. He decided to take part in the celebration. He was happy.

3. The Story Of Jacob’s and Esau’s

The twins grew up very differently. Jacob was “a quiet man, staying among the tents” and his mother’s favorite.

Esau was “a skillful hunter, a man of the open country” and his father’s favorite. One day, Esau returned from hunting and desired some of the lentil stew that Jacob was cooking. Jacob offered to give his brother some stew in exchange for his birthright.

The special honor that Esau possessed as the older son, which gave him the right to a double portion of his father’s inheritance. Esau put his temporary, physical needs over his God-given blessing and sold his birthright to Jacob (Genesis 25:27-34).

When the time came for Isaac to bestow his blessing on his sons, Jacob and his mother contrived to deceive Isaac into blessing Jacob in Esau’s place.

When Esau found that his blessing had been given to Jacob, he threatened to kill his brother, and Jacob fled (Genesis 27:1 – 28:7). Years later, Jacob and Esau met and were reconciled (Genesis 33).

4. The Tower Of Babel In The Bible

After the Great Flood, man had again begun to multiply and fill the earth. They all spoke one language and understood one another well.

They decided to build a tower which was to reach heaven, to make them equal to G‑d, and at the same time, to make it possible for them to stay together.

This symbol of their divine strength, as they thought, was to be built in the valley of the Land of Shinar.
G‑d decided to destroy their arrogance by destroying their ability to understand one another.
He, therefore, confused the people by splitting them up into seventy different nations and tribes, each with a language of its own, (hence the name Babel, meaning “confusion”).

When this happened, the project of the Tower had to be given up. The various groups migrated in different directions and settled in all parts of the world.

5 . Joseph Unit With His Brothers

We were told Joseph’s story, Genesis. The Scripture makes it clear that Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and was highly loved by his father as he was the first son through his favored wife, Rachel.

Genesis 27:30 tells us Jacob “loved Joseph more than any of his other sons because he had been born to him in old age, and he made an ornate robe for him.” Joseph’s brothers were not happy about the fact that their father favored him and they grew to deeply resent him.

Genesis 37:4 says, “But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.” It didn’t help that Joseph began sharing his prophetic dreams with his family which showed him one day ruling over his family.

The brothers disliked the dream so much that they plotted to kill him in the wilderness.
One of the brothers, Reuben objected to murder but suggested they throw him into a cistern as he was planning to come back and rescue him.

Before he could return for his brother, some merchants passed by and suggested they sell him into slavery.
The brothers told their father that he was torn by animals and show his bloodied coat to prove it.

While in slavery, Joseph is falsely accused of rape. While he is in jail he meets a few people who served the pharaoh. They begin to share their dreams with Joseph and he interprets them.
Those dreams go exactly as predicted. Joseph then interprets Pharaoh’s dream. Because of his prophetic abilities, Joseph is made second in command of Egypt.

Joseph is shown by God that there will be seven good years and famine for seven years.
As a result of this, Joseph starts up a governmental food bank.
When the famine comes as he predicts, Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt to buy grain.
It is then that he encounters his brothers again, now remorseful, along with his father.

After all the things the brothers did, many would expect Joseph to hate them, inflict harm on them, or at least cast them aside. However, he doesn’t respond this way.
He sees their change of heart and shows them forgiveness. He even tells them not to be angry with themselves for what they’d done to him and says that God had sent him to Egypt to preserve them (Genesis 45:4-8).
