What cleat does Alex Morgan wear?

Soccer News: Following the 2015 introduction of the Nike Women’s Cleat Pack, released prior to this year’s World Cup tournament, Nike unveils its latest collection of cleats designed explicitly for female players. The new pack, launching in early 2016, features new eye-popping colorways for each of the brand’s four cleat types: designed explicitly for female players.

“The pitch is where I like to express who I am. I’m a competitor to the fullest, but I like to do it in style,” says U.S. Women’s National Team and Seattle Reign FC forward Megan Rapinoe. “I love to push the envelope, and this new cleat pack will bring individuality to players within the context of team play.”

Julie Johnston will wear the all-new Tiempo. Images and details of the boot will be released in the coming months.

The new women’s cleat collection will be available in women’s sizes via the Nike Soccer App in early 2016 and will be at Nike stores, Nike.com and select retailers shortly afterwards. When the United States plays its first game of the Women’s World Cup on June 8 against Australia, you might be drawn to Alex Morgan’s feet.

That’s because she — along with Abby Wambach, Sydney Leroux and many other players — will be wearing these crazy-cool, brand new highlighter cleats from Nike.

These are the Nike Hypervenom II, a “definitive boot for deadly agility.” This shoe is specially made for attacking players and as Nike stated, the cleats help players make “moves in any direction and usually making the one their opponent least expects.”

“This is foot-informed design at its finest,” said Nathan VanHook, Nike’s senior design director for football footwear. “All of the linear angles on the boot align with the natural flex of the foot. The Flywire powers a lockdown system that prevents the foot from sliding within the boot. We didn’t design a boot that works for the foot, but rather with the foot.”

International stars such as Neymar and Wayne Rooney are fans of these cleats, and now Nike is making them for women.

We’ve finally got our first look at the all-new Nike PhantomVNM, which will officially drop on Jan. 19, 2019. The boot will be worn by the likes of Harry Kane and Alex Morgan, so you can probably guess what sort of footballer these are made for.

“My finishing is a balance between power and placement,” said Morgan in Nike’s press release for the cleat. “It depends where I am in the box, but I’d say my focus is usually 60/40 accuracy versus power.”

With that in mind, it’s interesting to look at the 13 ridges placed at the instep — Nike is referring to this as the Precision Pwr strike zone, and the ridges are placed at specific angles to help keep the ball down in the event of a mis-hit while also working to give your shot that extra bit of venom. 

If you want a real scientific explanation of it, here’s Nike Senior Design Director for Football Footwear Jeongwoo Lee: “We teamed up with our research lab to utilize a robotic leg to test strikes from a variety of angles with urethane injected ‘blades’ across the instep. This enabled us to go deep statistically on the impact that the various blade iterations had on accuracy, elevation, power and spin. The lab data helped us land on the exact specifications of Precision Pwr strike zone built for finishers.”

The first edition of the boot is in “total orange and black" as part of the “Game Over” collection. The cleats will reportedly retail for $250.
