What computer works best with Dragon NaturallySpeaking?

It is probably the question I get asked most: "What is the best laptop or computer for Dragon Professional Individual"

Dragon speech recognition is a hungry beast

 and not easily satisfied with the system resources on your computer.

To make working with Dragon pleasant experience, it really helps to have a fast computer. Most Dragon users are aware of that and they wonder what the specs are for a computer that works fabulously with the speech recognition software.

This post only deals with the hardware. There are many aspects of using a computer that influence Dragon's performance, but the hardware specifications for the computer are really important.

The best computer for Dragon

This actually is a bit of a hot potato topic, for there are people who will swear that if you don't have at least 32 GB of RAM and the newest and fastest processor, you will struggle to use Dragon.

I do not agree. None of my computers have more than 16 GB of internal memory and I am pleased with the performance. I also have one computer that has 8 GB of RAM and even that one runs Dragon 15 without issue.

However, in speech recognition land "the bigger, the better" is usually true. A faster processor and more memory will increase your system's performance and therefore will help with Dragon performance as well. But there is the matter of diminishing returns: a reasonably fast processor with a reasonable amount of RAM will make a huge difference compared to an old/slow system. However, the step from this reasonably good computer to a state-of-the-art, super expensive one may then be disappointing.

These are the points that I would make when you are searching for a new computer:

  • Intel i5 or i7 Processor
    I have no experience with AMD processors, but would estimate that a modern Rhyzen processor would also work well.
  • Minimal 8 GB Ram, preferably 16 GB
  • SSD disk, rather than regular spinning hard disk

The best computer for YOU

Above I discussed the technical system requirements for Dragon. However, it is not just Dragon that needs to be able to work well with your computer, it is also YOU.

Especially for laptops, there are quite a few aspects that you should consider before making your final choice. It certainly is not only about the technical specs.

Here are some considerations:

  • Screen size
  • Weight
  • Fan noise
  • Keyboard and touchpad quality

Hi, I could do with some advice from the forum on a new laptop to run Dragon. I purchased Dragon professional individual (version 15.3) earlier this year. With my current laptop it generally runs well, however at times when I have several applications running my laptop can freeze or slow down. My current laptop is a HP spectre X360 (Intel i7-5500u 2.4 GHz, 2 cores, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD).

I am therefore looking to order a new laptop to improve performance. I was planning to buy a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 with AMD Ryzen 7 pro 4750U processor (1.7 GHz, max boost up to 4.1 GHz, 8 cores, 8 MB cache), 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. However I checked with Nuance technical support they advise that the processor should be 2.2 GHz minimum, can the forum advise your thoughts on this please? I’m not a computer specialist so would appreciate your guidance, thanks Andrew

                    Welcome (See Mission Statement)

We recommend 16 Gb of RAM (8 Gb minimum) for most end-users; 32 Gb of RAM or more for power users. We prefer Intel i9, i7, i5 or AMD equivalent processors. Note that DPI/DPG 15.6/DMPE 4.3 require notably less processing power than previous Dragon releases.

SSD (solid-state hard drives) have recently become much more affordable and recommended over traditional HDDs. We recommend 512 Gb SSD (256 Gb minimum) or larger. Don't forget to upgrade to the free DPI 15.6 Download.

Hi Lunis, thanks for your guidance. To give you some background, due to disability I bought Dragon earlier this year to help me to use my laptop. My overall experience with Dragon has been very good, it has made a big difference and allows me to use my computer every day and for extended periods.
I live in the UK, I don't know that much about computer hardware. I took advice from a former colleague (not a Dragon user) who advised that I should prioritise this number of processor cores over CPU clock rate. That's what led me to selecting the laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 pro 4750U processor (8 cores). I've looked at benchmark comparisons of processors online and the Ryzen 7 pro seems to match or outperform Intel i7 processors which are running at a higher base clock speed of.
The specific point I wanted to check with you is the clock speed required for Dragon. Nuance quote 2.2 GHz Intel® dual core, is the AMD Ryzen 7 pro 4750U processor with base frequency of 1.7 GHz (max boost up to 4.1 GHz) sufficient to work well with Dragon?
If there is a concern with the Ryzen processor clock speed being too low, I could change my selection to a laptop with Intel processor running at higher clock speed (e.g GHz). But here in the UK would pay approximately 50% more for the same overall configuration (32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD), or if I lower the spec to 16 GB RAM then approx 30% more.
Thanks Andrew

This isn't exactly in our wheelhouse but we don't believe that even today's lowest clock speeds will make any noticeable difference. However, Nuance recommendations should be taken with a grain of salt. They are still recommending a minimum of 4 GB of RAM. Your computer is above and beyond requirements.

You should've filled out your member profile because we are only now finding out that you are disabled. US government law dictates that KnowBrainer 2017 (w/2020 AI Commands) must be made globally freely available to anyone with a permanent physical disability. Come to think of it, that might've been the Big Haired Lady and her Lemon flavored Clorox martini recommendation but in either event, check your email.

The newer CPU with double the number of cores will definitely outperform the older one, even at lower clock rate, however, the question is whether or not the Dragon method of determining whether the minimum requirements are met during installation will account for it correctly. I have no answer to this. And you will never know until you either try, or until someone who actually did that comments.

Based on my experience recently purchasing a new laptop for Dragon, etc., I suggest looking closely at TDP, i.e. heat emitted by the processor and related cooling / fan noise.

I am much happier with an MS SurfBook3 (TDP 15W, 1.3/1.5GHz) than I was with a Dell 7591 (TDP 45W, 2.6-4.5GHz)

So unhappy that I bought the new SurfBook3 even though the Dell7591 was only a few months old. $$, but my productivity is $$$. Looking for a family member to pass the Dell on to.

Many speech problems seemed to be associated with the Dell's fans running VERY LOUDLY. Stalls, but also poor recognition.

---+ DETAILS

* Microsoft Surface Book 3
* Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.3/1.5GHz [*], TDP 15W,
* GPU: NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design

I was EXTREMELY UNHAPPY with

* Dell Inspiron 7000 (7591),
* Intel Core i7-10510U 4.9, TDP 45W
* GPU NVIDIA GeForce MX150,

With exactly same version of Dragon (DPG 15.6), far fewer stalls on the SurfBook3 than on the Dell 7591. (I still have stalls on the SurfBook3, but nowhere near as many.)

Many of the Dell7591 stalls seem to have been associated with the laptop cooling fans running VERY loud.

Can I use Dragon on a laptop?

Article Details. YES! Dragon is licensed per user, not per computer. So if you have more than one PC or laptop, you can install Dragon on multiple computers (up to five machines total) for regular usage.

How much RAM does Dragon need?

Memory (RAM): 32-bit: 4 GB for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10.

Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work with Windows 10?

Yes it does. I use Dragon Medical 2 (12.5, later it got upgraded to 12.51 and 12.52) and it works fine with Windows 10. Version 12.52 is made to be fully compatible with Windows 10, but like I said, I had no problem with running 12.5. What is Dragon NaturallySpeaking used for?
