How can I make a lost baggage claim on Turkish Airlines?

Per Turkish Airlines baggage policy, if your checked baggage has been delayed, you must contact the Lost & Found Office at the arrival airport and file a lost baggage complaint. If your baggage cannot be located within 5 days, Turkish Airlines baggage policy requires that:

• You must file a claim online on the baggage irregularity report and follow-up page 
• You must provide evidence of the costs incurred by you, or 
• You should file a claim with your travel insurance company

Turkish Airlines Delayed Baggage Compensation

To seek compensation for expenses incurred due to delayed baggage, you must make your claim—along with evidence of costs incurred during the period—within 21 days of receiving your baggage.

Turkish Airlines Damaged Baggage or Missing Items 

If your checked baggage arrives damaged on Turkish Airlines, or any items are missing from it, you must: 

• If you’re at the airport. Report it immediately to the Lost & Found Office. The staff will assess the damage and issue a Damaged baggage and/or missing possessions report to you.
• If you’ve left the airport. Report the damage or missing items online within 7 days through the Baggage Irregularity Report and Follow-up page. 

Exceptions 

Per Turkish Airlines’ baggage policy, the following damages will not be covered: 

• Minor damages—such as scuffs, cuts, scratches, dents, stains, dirt, marks, and punctures. 
• Loss of or damage to protruding parts, such as pull handles, wheels, external locks, zipper tabs, straps, and pockets.
• Items contained in overstuffed bags and improperly packaged items.
• Bags containing confiscated or items retrieved by security or airport personnel.

Turkish Airlines Liability for Lost and Damaged Bags

Turkish Airlines’ liability for lost, delayed, or damaged checked baggage—except mobility aids, assistive devices, and wheelchairs—is limited to: 

• For flights subject to the Warsaw Convention rules. The equivalent of 250 Poincare Francs per kg per passenger, i.e., ~USD 20 per kg per passenger.
• For flights subject to the Montreal Convention rules. The equivalent of SDR 1,131 per passenger, i.e., ~USD 1633 per passenger.

Turkish Airlines Liability for Mobility Aids, Assistive Devices, and Wheelchairs

If your mobility aid, assistive device, or wheelchair is damaged by Turkish Airlines, the criteria for calculating the loss (when flying within the U.S.) will be per the provisions of the U.S. Department of Transportation, as explained below. 

• On U.S. flights. You will be fully compensated for the loss or damage—regardless of any rule that limits the liability for lost or damaged baggage.
• On international flights. The compensation will be per the provisions of the Montreal Convention for such items. If the Montreal Convention does not apply for some reason, the older Warsaw Convention treaty may apply.

Restricted Baggage Items on Turkish Airlines

Per Turkish Airlines baggage policy:

• You can carry liquids and semi-solid items only after you’ve taken adequate precautions against leakages, breakages, and contamination. They must be vacuum-packed or sealed and locked in adhesive bags with adequate protection. If packed in cardboard/tin boxes, plastic bags, sacks, and containers, they will not be allowed in the cabin. 
• You cannot carry more than 5 liters of liquids in your checked baggage (excluding water), and each pack must be under 1 liter.

Turkish Airlines Sports Equipment Policy

Turkish Airlines’ sports baggage policy allows you to carry most sports equipment as checked baggage. You will not need to pay any special fees if your sports equipment is not on the sports equipment list. 

Points to remember 

• Your sports baggage must not weigh more than 70lb/32kg—if it does, you must split it into 2 baggage pieces. 
• You must inform Turkish Airlines Reservations about the size of your sports equipment at the time of booking. 
• You must pack your sports equipment in a special case to prevent damage. 
• Do not load your sports equipment package to the baggage belt when checking in.

  • Mountaineering equipment comprises a special protection bag, 2 poles, 1 ice axe, and 1 pair of mountaineering shoes/boots. 
  • Must not exceed 70lb/32 kg. 
  • The carriage of mountaineering equipment included under dangerous materials is prohibited. 
  • Subject to domestic charges and a special baggage fee on international flights as shown in the table.  
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized mountaineering equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
• Golf equipment
  • Golf equipment comprises a golf bag, golf clubs, golf balls, 1 pair of golf shoes, and a golf tee—personal items must not be placed inside. 
  • Must not exceed 50lb/23kg. 
  • Subject to domestic charges but the first set is free on international flights.

  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
• Archery equipment
  • Archery equipment comprises an archery bag, bow, and arrows.

  • Canoeing equipment comprises 1 canoe and 1 set of rows. 
  • Must not exceed 3.5 meters in length. 
  • Motor/electrical components will not be accepted.

• Rafting equipment
  • Rafting equipment comprises 1 inflatable boat (must be deflated), 1 rowing set, and 1 device for inflating—but not a pneumatic inflating device. 
  • Electrical/motor components are not permitted.
  • Subject to domestic charges and a special baggage fee on international flights as shown in the table.  
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized rafting equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
• Surfing equipment
  • Must not exceed 292cm/115in in length and 60cm/24in in width.
  • Subject to domestic charges and a special baggage fee on international flights as shown in the table.  
  • The tail and nose must be bubble wrapped/covered with foam; the sides must be adequately supported to prevent damage and must be carried in a suitable bag. 
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized surfing equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
  • Exceptions 
    • The first set of surfing equipment will be carried free of charge on: 

• Departing/return flights from Denpasar from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2022. Additional sets will be charged, however. 
• Departing/return flights from Marseilles (MRS) to Male (MLE). However, special fees will be charged for additional pieces or trips involving longer than 24-hour stopovers. 
• Departing/return flights from Bilbao (BIO) to Male (MLE) until December 31, 2021. However, additional pieces will be charged. However, special fees will be charged for additional pieces or for trips with a transit time in Turkey exceeding 24 hours.
• Departing/return flights from Porto (OPO), Lisbon (LIS), to Mauritius (MRU), Male (MLE), Jakarta (JKT), Colombo (CMB), Tel Aviv (TLV), and Cape Town (CPT) until December 31, 2021. However, special fees will be charged for additional pieces or for trips with a transit time in Turkey exceeding 24 hours.
• Departing/return flights between Moscow (MOW) and Male (MLE) until December 31, 2022. However, an extra fee will be charged for additional sets or when the stopover time exceeds 24 hours.

• Windsurfing equipment
  • Windsurfing equipment comprises 1 surfboard, 1 wooden spar, 1 sail, and 1 mast. 
  • The length must not exceed 292cm/115in and the width must not exceed 60cm/24in.
  • The sails/masts must be detached and folded. 
  • Subject to domestic charges and a special baggage fee on international flights as shown in the table.  
  • The tail and nose must be bubble wrapped/covered with foam; the sides must be adequately supported to prevent damage and must be carried in a suitable bag. 
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized surfing equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
  • Inappropriately sized surfing equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
• Water skiing equipment 
  • Water skiing equipment comprises 1 standard pair of skis or a slalom wakeboard. 
  • Subject to domestic charges, but the first pair can be carried free of charge on international flights.
  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized surfing equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
• Diving equipment
  • Diving equipment comprises a diving suit, fins, mask, empty buoyancy vest (BC), harpoon, snorkel, underwater flashlight, knife, diving socks, regulator, and empty diving cylinder.
  • Equipment such as diving lamps/underwater flashlights and soldering irons can be carried either as cabin baggage or checked baggage. However, the power source must be removed and packed separately to prevent accidental activation or short-circuiting. 
  • The harpoon must not be set and the tips must be packed separately. 
  • Must be properly packed to prevent damage.
  • Must be reserved in advance because some aircraft may not be suited for carriage.
  • Inappropriately sized surfing equipment will be carried as cargo baggage. 
  • Exceptions
    • The first set of your scuba diving equipment will be transported free of charge on:

• Departing/return flights from the United Kingdom (first departure point on the ticket), Aqaba, Male, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh till December 31, 2021. A special fee will be charged for additional sets or voluntary stopovers exceeding 24 hours in Turkey. For flights between the Maldives–Colombo with a stopover, a fee of EUR 30 will be charged.
• Departing/return flights from Ireland to Male (MLE) till December 31, 2021. However, a special fee will be charged for additional pieces. For flights between the Maldives–Colombo with a stopover, a fee of EUR 30 will be charged.
• Departing/return flights from Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) till December 31, 2021. However, a special fee will be charged for additional pieces or if there’s a voluntary stopover exceeding 24 hours in Turkey. 
• Departing/return flights from Ireland and the United Kingdom (first departure point on the ticket) to the following cities till December 31, 2021: 
  • Aqaba (AQJ), Muscat (MCT), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Hanoi (HAN), Antananarivo (TNR), Colombo (CMB), Denpasar-Bali (DPS), Tel Aviv (TLV), Zanzibar (ZNZ), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Havana (HAV), Port Louis (MRU), Jakarta (JKT), Seychelles (SEZ), Cape Town (CPT), Maputo (MPM), Manila (MNL), Johannesburg (JNB), Durban (DUR), Dar es Salaam (DAR), Bangkok (BKK), and Phuket (HKT). • Bowling equipment
  • Bowling equipment comprises 1 bowling bag, 1 ball, and 1 pair of bowling shoes.

You’re allowed to transport electric and motorized bicycles under the rules that apply to dangerous materials. The baggage fee for bicycles on domestic routes within Turkey is TRY 59. 

On international routes, the baggage fee for bicycles is: 

• EUR 30 on flights to/from the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa.
• EUR 50 on flights to/from Africa (excl. North Africa) and Asia.
• EUR 60 on all other routes.

Exceptions. If you’re travelling to or from Alanya, Adana, Antalya, Nevşehir, Kayseri, and Belgrade, you can carry your bicycle for free up to December 31, 2021.

When transporting, be sure to: 

• Pack your bicycle in a sturdy cardboard/paperboard box to prevent damage. 

• Deflate the tires, fold handlebars lengthwise, bring down the saddle as low as possible, and remove and pack the extending parts such as pedals. 
• Reserve in advance as some aircraft do not accept bicycles.

If you’re carrying liquids or semi-solid items in your checked baggage, you must pack them properly to prevent any chances of leakages, breakages, and contamination. Be sure to vacuum-pack them, or seal and lock them in adhesive bags with proper protection. Also, you’re not allowed to carry more than 5 liters of liquids in your checked baggage (other than water), as long as no single pack exceeds 1 liter.

• Copy of your ticket.
• Baggage receipt when your baggage was handed over. 
• List of items contained in the baggage. 
• A request in writing from you.
• Receipts for articles in the baggage, if available.

Turkish Airlines hand baggage size must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 23cm per bag.

Turkish Airlines’ free baggage allowance for USA flights will depend on your route. The Economy Class baggage allowance, depending on your route, will be 2 bags of 50lb/23kg each or 1 bag of 50lb/23kg. The Business Class baggage allowance will be 2 bags of 70lb/32kg each on all routes to/from the United States.

The free baggage allowance on Turkish Airlines international flights operating on the weight concept is 66lb/30kg on Business Class and 44lb/20kg on Economy Class (per passenger). Infants are allowed 

22lb/10kg plus 1 collapsible stroller not exceeding 115cm. 
The free baggage allowance for international flights operating on the piece concept is 2 bags each for Economy and Business Class, as long as the maximum weight does not exceed 50lb/23kg per bag for Economy Class and 70lb/32kg per bag for Business Class. Infants are allowed 1 bag of 50lb/23kg per infant plus 1 collapsible stroller not exceeding 115cm.

If you’re flying on a piece system flight, such as an international flight to or from the United States, you’re allowed 2 bags of 50lb/23kg each on Economy Class and 2 bags of 70lb/32kg each for Business Class. Infant passengers below 2 years are allowed 1 checked bag of 50lb/23kg plus 1 collapsible stroller or pushchair. 

If you’re flying on an international weight system flight, you’re allowed 44lb/20kg per passenger on Economy Class and 66lb/30kg on Business Class. You can carry as many bags as you like, provided you don’t exceed the word limit. Infant passengers below 2 years of age are allowed 22lb/10kg plus 1 collapsible stroller/pushchair.

On weight concept flights (international), Economy Class passengers are allowed up to 30kg/66lb per passenger and Business Class passengers are allowed 40kg/88lbper passenger. 

On piece concept flights (international), Economy Class passengers are economy 2 bags of 23kg/50lb each per passenger and Business Class passengers are allowed 2 bags of 32kg/70lb each per passenger. Also, no checked bag must exceed 158cm/62in in combined linear dimensions.

You’re allowed 2 bags of 23kg each on international piece concept flights in Economy Class, which adds up to 46kg/100lb per passenger. However, the weight must not exceed 23kg/50lb per bag. If you’re travelling on Business Class, the maximum weight per bag must not exceed 32kg/70lb, which adds up to 64kg/140lb per passenger.
