Consider waiting to shop on these holidays or holiday weekends. If the holiday falls on a Friday or Monday, stores will typically hold sales throughout the entire weekend.

You can count on a holiday sale every two to three months. Retailers are constantly switching up their promotions, so the best holiday to shop for depends on the year and which appliance you’re looking for. If you can’t wait a few months for the next holiday weekend to roll around, there are a few other times you can find discounts on appliances.

Retail Holidays

Stores offer some of the biggest discounts of the year on retail holidays, including Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). Cyber Monday is another retail holiday that comes with some huge sales, but it focuses on online shopping instead of in-store. Cyber Monday takes place the Monday after Thanksgiving.

During the Off-Season

Air conditioners, heaters, furnaces, boilers and grills are all examples of seasonal appliances. Buy these during the off-season to get the most bang for your buck. For example, purchase a new air conditioner in the winter and a heater in the summer to take advantage of markdowns as stores adjust their inventories and make room for seasonally appropriate products.

Retailers tend to hike up seasonal appliance prices when they’re in demand. Buying a grill in June will cost you significantly more than buying the same grill in November. The tricky part is timing your purchase to ensure stores have these items in stock. Take advantage of end-of-season sales when you can be sure the appliance you need is still in stock.

At the End of the Month

If you’re shopping for appliances at a local store, they may have end-of-month quotas to meet. Some even let commissioned salespeople have permission to offer discounts in order to close last-minute deals. That gives you the upper hand when shopping.

Don’t be afraid to haggle and ask your salesperson directly for a discount. If they say no, you can always purchase the appliance elsewhere.

When New Models Release

Year-old appliance models typically drop in price right before or after the manufacturer releases the newest model. It’s the same for most products on the market, especially electronics. Think about it—someone who waited in line to get their hands on a newly-released iPhone 13 probably paid much more than someone who just got theirs today.

Instead of buying a new appliance when it’s at peak demand (right after the manufacturer releases it), opt for last year’s model. Depending on the upgrades the new model includes, you might not even need the extra features.

If a new model is dropping soon, pay attention to the price of the year-old model so you can snag it while everyone else is paying extra for the newest version.

Other Ways to Save on Appliances

If your refrigerator or oven breaks, you probably don’t have time to wait around for the next sale. But just because you’re in an emergency doesn’t mean you need to pay top dollar for a new appliance.

Purchase a Floor Model

Shop in person and ask a salesperson if you can purchase an open-box or floor model appliance at a discount. Because such appliances are technically used, they are often less expensive than a brand new one that’s still in its original packaging. You may even be able to get extra discounts for minor damages, like scratches or dings that don’t impact the appliance’s performance.

Comparison Shop

When you’re in the market for a new appliance, make sure to shop around before you settle on one. Some stores may have the same model at a lower price than another store, so you could save money with comparison shopping.

Check Credit Card Benefits

Some credit cards offer discounts on certain brands, including various home appliance brands and big box stores. If yours doesn’t offer any discounts, check out its rewards policy. You may get a percentage of your purchase as cashback or it could accumulate points towards your next vacation. While this won’t directly save you money on the appliance itself, it could pay off in the future.
