What song did Elvis sing at the end of his concerts?

Elvis Presley had a private performance hours before his death, marking the last time he sang his songs.

On Aug. 16, 1977, Presley shocked the world when he was found dead by his then-fiancee, Ginger Alden, inside his Graceland's bathroom. He was scheduled to hold his concert in Portland, Maine, before his death, but he still got the chance to have a private performance hours before taking his last breath.

Express UK noted that the King of Rock and Roll had his last concert on Jun. 27 that year at Indianapolis' Market Square Arena where he performed his hit song, "Can't Help Falling in Love." But his cousin and member of the Memphis Mafia, Billy Smith, witnessed his final private performance when he came over to the singer's racquetball court.

He appeared in an interview on the Memphis Mafia Kid YouTube channel and recalled how Presley hurt his shin during the game. After ensuring he was okay, Elvis stood up and played the piano to have his final private concert for Smith.

For the last time, he performed "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" and "Unchained Melody," per Smith.

The songs were featured on his "From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee" and "Moody Blue" albums, respectively.

After his final performance, they headed to his Graceland mansion so he could prepare for his August 17 concert in Maine's Cumberland County Civic Center.

However, he did not know he would not make it to the concert.

Elvis Presley's Death

Doctors said Presley died of a heart attack that was likely worsened by his addiction to prescription barbiturates and the medications he took the night before his death.

It was noted that he and Alden visited his dentist, Lester Hoffman, a day before his passing due to tooth pain. He then asked his personal physician, Dr. Nichopoulos, for painkillers and received a prescription for six Dilaudid tablets.

Presley asked his stepbrother, Ricky Standly, to get them from the pharmacy at Baptist Memorial Hospital while spending some of his time playing racquetball with Smith and his wife, Jo.

When the singer was unable to sleep, he took the prescription drugs before consuming the second package of the pills the following day.

Presley took a total of three packages of pills and painkillers. When he went to the bathroom due to extreme constipation, he never came out alive.

Elvis Presley’s final performance

Presley’s last concert took place on June 26, 1977 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. There was a crowd of 18,000 people present.

According to Smooth Radio, the only unusual thing about the performance was that Presley brought several people from his life on stage with him and introduced them to the audience.

The site goes on to write that some fans say the King somehow knew it would be his final performance, while others think he brought his friends and family on stage that night in anticipation of the upcoming tell-all biography titled Elvis: What Happened? by his former bodyguards, Sonny and Red West. Whatever his reason was at the time, the Market Square Arena performance was marked a special one thanks to all of Presley’s personal guests.

Elvis Presley’s last song

One day before the concert in Indianapolis, Presley had a new song come out, “Way Down,” which debuted on the Billboard’s Country Singles Chart.

The song peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart on Aug. 6, 1977, and fell to No. 53 the week of Aug. 27. But four days after Presley died, “Way Down” became No. 1 on the Billboard Country Singles Chart. It also topped the United Kingdom’s singles chart, which was the only other Presley record to do so besides “The Wonder of You,” which came out in 1970.

Everyone wanted to listen to the King

After Presley died, record stores couldn’t keep the King’s music on their shelves. He sold out everywhere. According to Country Daily, “RCA kept its Indianapolis plant open 24 hours a day, pressing only material by The King to meet the demand.”

Additionally, producer Felton Jarvis got to work enhancing recordings of Presley’s final concert tour to release as a two-record set called “Elvis In Concert.”

The month following Presley’s death, the King was in the top spot on Billboard’s country album chart for 15 weeks in a row. “Moody Blue” was at the top of the charts for the first 10 weeks with the live L.P. following behind.
