Walter Jerry Payton was born in Columbia, Mississippi on July 25, 1954. Payton was known as “Sweetness” because of his incredible football skills as well as his generous off-the-field personality.

Payton first gained national attention as a halfback at Jackson State University, where he started his freshman year in 1971. He was an All-American selection and the Black College Player of the Year in 1973 and 1974. Payton rushed for over 3,500 yards and scored over 450 points in four years at Jackson State, demonstrating to fans and opponents alike what a versatile and talented player he was.
