For the past decade, the former Kate Middleton has been styled as Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, and is also known as the Countess of Strathearn when in Scotland.

When her father-in-law Prince Charles becomes king she's set to become the first Princess of Wales since Princess Diana died in 1997.

What will Kate's title be when Prince William eventually becomes king?

When William accedes to the throne he will be king, but Duchess Kate won't be queen in the same way that Queen Elizabeth II is queen—instead, she'll have the title Queen Consort.

When William is king, it is likely that his wife will be known as Queen Catherine.

The last person to hold the title Queen Consort was the current queen's mother. When her husband King George VI died in 1952 she was officially re-styled Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

If William dies before Kate and their son Prince George becomes king, Kate will then become the Queen Mother.

The last consort of the monarch was the queen's late husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. He was consort from her accession in 1952 until his death at the age of 99 last year, making him the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

Following Queen Elizabeth II's death, many are wondering about the royal line of succession.

It has left some wondering questions like how possible it is that Prince William will become the British king. The answer is fairly straightforward, but there's a little more to it than you might think.

Here's a quick explainer of the next few people in line to take the throne after Queen Elizabeth II:

Determining the next in line for the throne means following the rules

There are two ways for a royal to make it to the throne. According to Buckingham Palace, succession to the throne is determined by ancestry and laws put into place by the British government.

Parliamentary statutes dictate that succession to the British throne is influenced by the following factors: descent, legitimacy, religion, and sex for anyone born after October 28, 2011.

The original law stated that the first-born son would take precedence over other children. The new succession law means that heirs to the throne — both male and female — will be determined by the order in which they are born.

This means girls like Princess Charlotte may be considered for the throne in the future.

Now that Queen Elizabeth II has died, Prince Charles has taken the throne to become King Charles III. Charles is the Queen's eldest son, which is why he's first in line after her.

Prince William will have to wait his turn

Prince William could have become king directly after Queen Elizabeth II only if Charles had died before her, according to Robert Hazell, a professor of government and the constitution at the University College London.

If Prince William becomes king, then Kate Middleton will become the queen. The royal couple married April 29, 2011, in an elaborate ceremony in front of 1,900 people at Westminster Abbey.

"When William becomes king, Kate will become queen," Hazell said. "There is nothing to prevent William becoming king, other than his own premature death."

Next up in line after William? Not Prince Harry. The Duke of Sussex will most likely never see the throne, as he's behind Prince William and Middleton's children, according to the line of succession determined by Buckingham Palace.

After William, his eldest son, Prince George, is next in line for the royal throne.

"If William were to die before Charles, then on the death of Charles, Prince George would become king," Hazell said. Charlotte and Louis follow George in the line of succession.

Only after William and Middleton's children are ineligible to take the throne would Prince Harry be able to become king. This is still true even though he has stepped back from royal life — he is still in the royal line of succession.

His first-born son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is seventh in line to the throne.

What number will William be when he's King?

However, the primary student is definitely not the first to have wondered which name Prince William could choose when he is on the throne. As a future King, Prince William could opt to follow in his father and grandmother's footsteps and use his first name – which would make him King William V.

What will William be called when Charles is King?

With Charles the new king, Prince William (the queen's third-eldest grandchild) will take on new titles, including the traditional styling given to the king-in-waiting. “William becomes Duke of Cornwall when Charles becomes king and will be invested [formally named] as Prince of Wales,” Harris says.

Will William be King William the Third?

The King gave his first speech as monarch King Charles III has revealed when his son, Prince William, will succeed him as monarch in his first speech as the King of England. In the speech, the new head of state revealed that he planned to serve for life, meaning that William will only succeed him when he passes away.

Will Kate Middleton be called queen when William is King?

When Prince William becomes King, his wife Kate will become Queen, but not in the same way that Queen Elizabeth II was queen. Kate, who will be the spouse of the ruling monarch whenever William ascends, will have the title Queen Consort. The title of 'consort' refers simply to the spouse of a ruling monarch.
