Hurt. Injured. Wounded. Damaged. You can use all these words to describe Stephen A. Smith at the moment.

If you're tuning in to "First Take" you might notice that there's a glaring, obvious, evident omission from the set: Stephen A. himself.

There's a simple, uncomplicated reason why he won't be on the popular show (and no, it has nothing to do with rival Skip Bayless).

ESPN's everyman will be sidelined for a little while as he recovers from surgery on his shoulder. He let the world in on the secret recently:

Appreciate the love I’ve been receiving from everyone who’s missed me on @FirstTake. I’m out because I’m rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Partial tear — rotator cuff AND Bicep, along with frayed Labrum, plus a Bone Spur. Aging sucks, but it is what it is. Back next month.#AllLove

"Appreciate the love I’ve been receiving from everyone who’s missed me on @FirstTake. I’m out because I’m rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Partial tear — rotator cuff AND Bicep, along with frayed Labrum, plus a Bone Spur. Aging sucks, but it is what it is. Back next month.#AllLove," Smith tweeted on July 14.

As indicated by his tweet, Smith hopes to be back in the saddle at some point next month.

A number of different hosts are likely going to fill in for Smith, including ESPN everyman Keyshawn Johnson, who was on the program on Monday morning, going jab-for-jab with Kendrick Perkins.

With the NFL season fast approaching and NBA offseason drama still simmering, "First Take" won't exactly be hurting for content to fill the Stephan A. void. Remember Brian Windhorst's captivating 'what's going on in Utah?' rant that spawned the summer's best meme? It happened on a show without Stephen A.

Here's to hoping Stephen A. gets healthy, well and fit in the coming weeks.

Fans noticed that Stephen A. Smith has been absent for most of July on ESPN’s First Take, a show that he is normally on daily.

The outspoken analyst shared with fans on Thursday the reason why he’s been off the air for the time being.

“Appreciate the love I’ve been receiving from everyone who’s missed me on @FirstTake,” Smith wrote. “I’m out because I’m rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Partial tear — rotator cuff AND Bicep, along with frayed Labrum, plus a Bone Spur. Aging sucks, but it is what it is. Back next month.#AllLove”

It’s unclear how the 54-year-old got the injury that he’s now recovering from. It sounds like he plans to return to ESPN in August, at the earliest, though.

Smith hasn’t been as active on Twitter this month, either. He normally tweets clips from the show or tweets his opinions on any sports topics circulating the news that day.

Smith has been a permanent analyst on First Take since 2012 when he joined forces with Skip Bayless, who is now the host of a Fox Sports 1 show called Skip and Shannon: Undisputed.

ESPN has been playing without its biggest star for over a month now as Stephen A. Smith rehabs from shoulder surgery and enjoys some well-earned vacation as well. There was some speculation the organization would get him some innings in the minors — shooting B-roll of a high school football practice or hosting afternoon drive in Albany — but it appears he'll jump right back into the fray on First Take beginning August 15th.

We know this because they gave him his own hype video announcing the long-awaited return. Which is simply not something we see every day for specific ESPN talent — if for any reason there were lingering doubts about Smith's unique place atop the call sheet.

It's wild to consider how many pent-up takes he'll have to unleash upon the masses. It's funny to imagine him stomping around with no television outlet for his latest Dak Prescott opinion. But that's all about to change.

That first Wednesday back with Chris Russo getting a little too comfortable lately? It will challenge the idea that 10 a.m. is too early for popcorn.
