Where to donate used suitcases near me

Something often overlooked is how families experiencing homelessness secure their belongings, especially when they move from one place to another. We at Families Forward can tell you firsthand, that more often than not, when families arrive at our emergency shelter, parents and children are carrying all of their possessions in trash bags. The same is true when they pack up and leave our shelter for more permanent housing.

Let that visual sink in . . . trash bags carrying cherished personal belongings.

Yes, the same trash bags you use to literally take out your garbage each week.

Let’s change that together!

Families Forward kindly invites you—our generous community—to “Share Luggage with Love” by donating new and used pieces of luggage and duffel bags so we can embrace our families with the level of hospitality and care they deserve in their time of need and beyond.

Because let’s face it . . . our families’ belongings aren’t trash so they shouldn’t be treated as such.

And do you know what would make your luggage donation even more meaningful?

A note of encouragement!

Please keep your sentiments short and general but positive and encouraging—let our families know that you care and that you’re invested in their happiness and success.

Consider donating a welcome mat!

We’ve created a new initiative to gift families a welcome mat when they move out of shelter into more permanent housing. Hospitality and kindness remain at the heart of our mission, and you can advance this mission by helping our families create a home out of their new housing.

At Travel Makers, we truly believe in the importance of giving back, so we have partnered with the “It’s My Bag” charity. Many times, when a child is placed in the foster care system, they have only a trash bag with which to carry their possessions and clothes in. “It’s My Bag” was started to provide suitcases for these foster children, allowing some sense of normalcy to a difficult situation. Even the small switch from a trash bag to a suitcase is an enormous change for these underprivileged children.

To help “It’s My Bag” with their goal, Travel Makers is currently serving as the Maryland drop-off location for the program. We collect gently used suitcases, duffel bags, and book bags to provide to children in the foster care system. If you would like to make a donation of toiletries, pillows, blankets, or clothes along with your donation bag we will gladly accept those items as well.

As an added incentive for helping these children, Travel Makers will provide a $25 gift certificate for any of our travel services to anyone who donates a suitcase or any of the other types of bags!

One option is to donate it to an organization that helps foster kids. Why? Because many foster children are moving from one place to another and don’t have anything to transport their belongings. Many end up using trash bags or plastic bags.

There are organizations around the country who will take used luggage, such as Suitcases for Kids, which was started by a 10-year-old girl. Other organizations you can check out are Luggage of Love and Bags4Kids.

If there aren’t any locations in your area, check local shelters for women and the homeless, or even Goodwill.

But if you’re also looking for a new suitcase of your own and have a gently used bag, you might want to look into the event “A Case for Giving.”

Here’s how it works. From now until February 29, 2016, you can bring a used bag into a participating luggage store and receive a credit for a new Briggs & Riley bag.

If you bring in a previously used Briggs & Riley bag, you’ll receive a $100 credit, and if you bring in a bag from another brand, you’ll receive a $50 credit.

Briggs & Riley is working with more than 100 charities for this event, including Ronald McDonald House, Treehouse for Kids, Make A Wish, Goodwill, women’s shelters, men’s homes, and coalitions for the homeless.
