The Munsters vs The Addams Family—Which Is Television’s True First Family of Fright?

There are many pop culture debates: Doctor Who or Star Trek? Blade or Blacula? Katie Perry or Taylor Swift? But there’s one perennial debate that's been raging for decades: Are you for The Munsters or The Addams Family?

WHICH CAME FIRST?

The Addams Family and The Munsters, two 1960s sitcoms starring macabre families, were essentially developed at the same time, and both ran for two seasons each. The Addams Family aired on ABC from September 18, 1964, to April 8, 1966, for a total of 64 episodes. The Munsters series originally aired on CBS from September 24, 1964, to May 12, 1966, for a total of 70 episodes.

ABOUT THE MUNSTERS

The Munsters is a family of benign monsters. The series starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster; Yvonne De Carlo as wife Lily; Al Lewis as Grandpa; Butch Patrick as Eddie, Herman’s and Lily’s son; and Beverley Owen (later replaced by Pat Priest) as their niece Marilyn.

The Munsters included analogs to Universal Monsters—Herman was a version of the Frankenstein's Monster, Grandpa was Dracula, Eddie is a werewolf, and a family relative is the Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Produced by the creators of Leave It to Beaver, the series was a satire of American suburban life, as well as both traditional monster movies and the wholesome family fare of the era. It achieved higher Nielsen ratings than the similarly macabre-themed The Addams Family, which aired concurrently on ABC.

The series originally aired on Thursday at 7:30 pm on CBS from September 24, 1964, to May 12, 1966. Seventy episodes were produced. It was cancelled after ratings dropped to a series low due to competition from ABC’s Batman.

The Munsters found a large audience in syndication. This popularity warranted a spin-off series, as well as several films, including one with a theatrical release, and several more recent attempts to reboot it.

ABOUT THE ADDAMS FAMILY

The Addams Family sitcom was based on the characters from Charles Addams' New Yorker cartoons. The 30-minute television series was created by David Levy and Donald Saltzman and shot in black-and-white, airing for two seasons on ABC from September 18, 1964, to April 8, 1966, for a total of 64 episodes. The show is also notable for its opening theme, composed and sung by Vic Mizzy.

A reunion TV film, Halloween with the New Addams Family, aired on NBC in October 1977 and starred most of the original cast, except for Blossom Rock, who was ill at the time and was replaced as Grandmama by Phyllis actress Jane Rose. Elvia Allman portrayed Mother Frump, whom Margaret Hamilton had played in the original series. Veteran character actors Parley Baer and Vito Scotti, who both had recurring roles in the original series, also appeared in the movie. The film also included new family members, such as Gomez's brother Pancho (played by Henry Darrow) and two additional children, Wednesday Jr. and Pugsley Jr.

In 1972, an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies featured the Addams Family. Astin, Jones, Coogan, and Cassidy all reprised their roles; 11 year old Jodie Foster provided the voice of Pugsley. This episode was the pilot for the 1973 animated series; Coogan and Cassidy were the only original series cast members who returned for this series. Jodie Foster also returned as the voice of Pugsley. Astin reprised his role as Gomez Addams for the 1992 animated adaptation of the series. Weatherwax and Loring, the only other original cast members still living at the time, did not participate.

In 1998, a standalone film, Addams Family Reunion, aired on the Fox Family Channel, followed by the series The New Addams Family that ran from 1998 to 2000. Astin appeared in the series as Grandpapa Addams.

The 2021 animated film The Addams Family 2 finds the Addams clan embarking on a road trip in a hideous and humongous camper.
