Which gas will have the greatest velocity at 400k?

#A. NO_2##B. O_2##C. F_2##D. Cl_2# According to my answer sheet, the correct answer is #A#, but I don't understand why. From my understanding, shouldn't the gas with the lowest molar mass have the highest speed?

Which gas will have the greatest velocity at 400k?

#B. O_2# should be the correct answer for the reasoning given.

Just as you stated, the gas with the lowest molar mass should have the highest speed, and #O_2# has the lowest molar mass. This relationship is true since #KE = 1/2mv^2#, so if the temperature, also known as the average kinetic energy, is constant, mass is inversely related to velocity.

Which gas has the highest velocity?

At a particular temperature, the average kinetic energy of all gaseous molecules is equal. Since hydrogen gas has the lowest mass out of these gases, it will have the highest average velocity.

Which gas would have the highest average speed at 298 K?

Thus, hydrogen is the gas which has the highest average velocity at 298 K.

How do you find the greatest average velocity?

To find where the average velocity is greatest, simply find between which two points the slope is the greatest. Note that positive average velocities are greater than negative average velocities.
