In the world of software, a grayed-out or disabled Web link, button, menu item or tool can be like a nightclub bouncer denying you access through the doors. Although the Adobe Photoshop image -editing software does have various occasions where certain options are grayed out, the Color Picker tool is never one of them. Like a diner, the Color Picker is always open for business 24/7, and it never gets "grayed out," but may show gray shading and coloring depending on your current design settings.

Definition

  1. The Photoshop Color Picker is where almost everything related to painting, fills, drawing and shapes begins. Designers use the Color Picker -- enabling it by double-clicking the top of the two boxes that make up the tool -- to choose their paint colors. You can only choose one color at a time from the Color Picker and that color appears in the top-left square on the Tools column. The chosen color, such as gray, remains in place until another is selected. This color also appears even when Photoshop is closed and reopened.

Location

  1. The Color Picker is located near the bottom of the Photoshop Tools column, positioned by default on the left side of the screen. If you do not see the column, click the "Window" menu and click the "Tools" option from the drop-down menu. If the "Tools" option already has a check mark next to it, it is open on the workspace, but may be hidden behind other tabs, palettes and menus. The Color Picker is two overlapping colored boxes, one at a slightly higher left diagonal to the other. The two boxes of the Color Picker are usually two different colors.

Color Choice

  1. Gray may have an endless number of shades from slate to dust and Color Picker users have a number of ways to choose their gray. The Photoshop Color Picker window uses a sliding rainbow where users click their choice of gray. Another option is to go directly to the gray Pantone number or type in the exact six digit color code. Any one of these procedures results in the Color Picker appearing as gray.

Mode

  1. One other potential reason for the Color Picker appearing as gray has to do with the color mode selected for the image. When pictures are grayscale or black and white, the Color Picker's options are reduced. You'll find the image's mode located off the "Image" menu's "Mode" option. Look on the fly-out menu. If "Grayscale" is checked, your image will not have colors to it and the Color Picker may show a gray, white or black hue. You may receive an image that is grayscale or inadvertently convert your image to grayscale by accidentally clicking this mode.
