Which Silverado 1500 has the most towing capacity?

Ryan OlbryshCar and Driver

We're in the age of the personal luxury pickup. Today's trucks, big and small, are more luxurious, more comfortable, and feature more gizmos and fancy technology than ever. But none of that really matters when there's a job that needs gettin' done.

Towing capacity has always been a big part of a pickup's appeal. It's like top speed for supercar guys. The bigger the number, the better. It's always been that way, and it always will be. Sure, it means bragging rights for the owner as well as the truck's manufacturer, but it's also a snapshot of the truck's engineering and capability.

Here's our list of new pickups with the highest towing capacity. They're ordered by towing capacity beginning with the lowest. We've highlighted the maximum conventional towing ratings here, but also mention gooseneck or fifth wheel ratings when appropriate.

Ford Maverick | 4000 pounds

The Ford Maverick is one of only two entries in the newly revived compact pickup segment. These little trucks are geared toward better fuel economy and a lower starting price than they are towing. The Maverick comes standard with a 191-hp inline-four hybrid and front-wheel drive. This base powertrain can tow up to 2000 pounds. Front- or all-wheel drive Mavericks using the 250-hp turbocharged inline-four can tow up to 4000 pounds when equipped with the 4K Tow package, a $745 option.

  • Base price: $23,320
  • Powertrain: 250-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 4000 lb

Hyundai Santa Cruz | 5000 pounds

The illuminated front grille on the Hyundai Santa Cruz sets it apart from any truck on this list. It looks nothing like the other offerings, and yet despite its compact stature, it matches larger trucks in at least some of its capability. A 191-hp inline-four engine with eight-speed automatic is standard. So is front-wheel drive, its four-door body style, and its roughly four-foot-long bed. Max towing for that model is 3500 pounds, surpassing base Ford Mavericks by 1500 pounds and matching the front-wheel drive Honda Ridgeline. To tow the most, you'll want the Santa Cruz with all-wheel drive and the 281-hp turbocharged inline-four with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. That also matches the capability of the all-wheel drive Ridgeline, at 5000 pounds.

  • Base price: $25,175
  • Powertrain: 281-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, eight-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 5000 lb

Honda Ridgeline | 5000 pounds

Now in its second generation, the Honda Ridgeline offers mid-size pickup charm with the ride of the crossovers and SUVs it shares its chassis with, like the Honda Pilot. The Ridgeline, which is only available in crew-cab configuration with four doors, comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. As a result, the Ridgeline's tow ratings don't set the world on fire. 2021 Honda Ridgelines are now all-wheel drive only, but formerly the two-wheel drive models pulled 3500 pounds, and the all-wheel drive Ridgeline maxed out at 5000 pounds. And yes, those are the same tow ratings bestowed on the Pilot.

  • Base price: $37,260
  • Powertrain: 280-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine, 9-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 5000 lb

Nissan Frontier | 6720 pounds

The Nissan Frontier is a fresh face with some familiar parts inside. The 310-hp 3.8-liter V-6 and nine-speed automatic transmission, added for last year's Frontier, powers the new truck. It also uses the same ladder-type frame, but with stronger mounting points for the suspension, new bump stops, and hydraulic body mounts that better insulate the cab from road noise. Its sole powertrain makes 281 lb-ft of torque at 4400 RPM, and the cheapest Frontier is the one that tows the most. Extended cab rear-wheel-drive Frontier S can tow up to 6720 pounds, while the least amount the new Frontier will pull is 6270 in PRO-4X guise. That's 20 pounds more than the max pulling capacity of the last-generation Frontier.

  • Base price: $28,990
  • Powertrain: 310-hp 3.8-liter V-6 engine, nine-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 6720 lb (RWD Frontier S King Cab)

Toyota Tacoma | 6800 pounds

It wasn't too long ago that the Toyota Tacoma had the mid-size truck market practically all to itself. Now there's new competition from Chevy, GMC, Ford, and Jeep, and they all tow more than the Tacoma. With its standard 159-horsepower four-cylinder, the Toyota can only pull 3500 pounds. Its 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6 with 265 lb-ft of torque improves those numbers greatly to between 6400 and 6800 pounds, depending on the truck's configuration. The Access Cab 4x2 can move the most. Most models get a standard six-speed automatic, which is about as antiquated as a land-line telephone, but the good news is Toyota still offers the V-6 with a six-speed manual in two models.

  • Base price: $29,430
  • Powertrain: 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 6800 lb

Ford Ranger | 7500 pounds

The midsize Ford Ranger doesn't offer a turbo-diesel like its competitors from Chevy and GMC. Ford's smallest pickup is powered solely by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that burns gasoline. Rated at 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, it's quite stout, and it's paired with the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the larger F-150. It doesn't pull as much weight as the competing diesels, but it isn't too far behind. Every Ranger, including 2WD and 4WD trucks, have a maximum tow rating of 7500 pounds. That's just 200 pounds less than the diesels in the class, but it's 500 pounds more than the V-6 powered Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

  • Base price: $37,710
  • Powertrain: 270-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 7500 lb

Jeep Gladiator | 7650 pounds

The Jeep Gladiator has been named North American Truck of the Year, and we awarded it a spot on our 10Best list. Although it is now offered with a turbo-diesel V-6, that's not where you'll find the most pulling capacity. Instead, Gladiators using the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6, which it shares with the Wrangler, do the most. It makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm, so it isn't the powerhouse of the class, however, it is available with a six-speed manual transmission. An eight-speed automatic is optional, and just like the Wrangler, every Gladiator is four-wheel drive. With the manual, this truck has a maximum tow rating of 4500 pounds, but the Gladiator Sport model can pull up to 7650 pounds when equipped with the automatic. That number drops to 7000 pounds for the Rubicon model.

  • Base price: $39,325
  • Powertrain: 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 engine, 8-speed automatic transmission

Chevrolet Colorado | 7700 pounds

The Chevrolet Colorado is available with a 200-hp four-cylinder, a 308-hp V-6, and a Duramax 2.8-liter turbo-diesel inline-4 with 181 horsepower. With the 2.5-liter, the Colorado can tow a maximum of 3500 pounds, but that number jumps to 7000 with the V-6. The puller of the pack is the 186-hp diesel that produces 369 lb-ft of torque. The oil burner is available in the four-door crew cab with the LT trim level with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, a Z71 with 4x4, or off-road ZR2 models. It adds an extra $5430 to the price of an LT, about $4,000 to a Z71 and $3500 to a ZR2, which is offered as a crew cab or extended cab. Unfortunately, the Duramax is only paired with a six-speed automatic. A manual or Chevy's more modern eight-speed automatic aren't offered.

  • Powertrain: 186-hp turbocharged 2.8-liter diesel inline-4 engine, six-speed automatic transmission
  • Max conventional towing: 7700 lb

The GMC Canyon is a mechanical twin to the Chevrolet Colorado. The two trucks are exactly the same size and use the same chassis, suspensions, engines, and transmissions. As you would expect, their capabilities are the same as well. The Canyon is available with three engines, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V-6, and a Duramax 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder. And like the Colorado, it tows best with the 186-horsepower diesel that produces 369 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is offered on the SLE, SLT, All-Terrain, and Denali models but not on the base SL trim. Only on the two crew-cab body styles is it paired with a six-speed automatic. It costs about $5000 extra.

Nissan Titan | 9370 pounds

This year Nissan has also made some mechanical updates to its full-size Titan pickup. That's a good thing, as it's the worst-selling truck in its class. Every Titan is still powered by Nissan's venerable 5.6-liter V-8, but the engine has been recalibrated for 91-octane premium fuel. This has increased its peak output numbers to 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. However, if you fill the tank with less expensive 87-octane gasoline, the engine's output is dialed back to last year's ratings, 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. Nissan has also ditched the Titan's seven-speed automatic for a nine-speed, and it has radically lowered its rear-axle gear ratio from 2.93 to 3.69:1. The changes have improved the truck's maximum towing capacity slightly to 9370. The Titan and Titan XD are the only trucks that offer a gooseneck trailer hitch standard on everything above the base trim level, pushing the max towing capacity to 11,000 pounds.

Toyota Tundra | 10,200 pounds

Though quite capable, Toyota's full-size pickup is bit short on bragging rights. The Tundra outsells the Nissan Titan, but its sales are far short of its other competitors. Its only engine, a 5.7-liter V-8, is also outmuscled consistently by the truck's rivals, and even the Nissan makes more power. The Toyota's 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque aren't too far behind, however, unfortunately its six-speed automatic transmission is just plain old. Double cab and the larger CrewMax body styles are offered, both in 4x2 or 4x4 configurations. Max tow ratings range from 9,800 pounds for the 4x4 CrewMax to 10,200 pounds for the 4x2 double cab. Both ratings are significantly higher than the Nissan Titan's. Finally, we found something Tundra owners can brag about.

Nissan Titan XD | 11,070 pounds

The 5.0-liter Cummins diesel option for the Nissan Titan XD died in 2020. Now every Titan XD is powered by the same 5.6-liter V-8 as the regular Titan. The engine gets the same recalibration that has increased its peak output numbers to 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. Nissan has also replaced the Titan XD's seven-speed automatic with a nine-speed, and it has lowered its rear-axle gear ratio. Now offered only as a 4x4 crew cab with a 6.5-foot bed, the XD is almost 15 inches longer, with a 151.6-inch wheelbase, and three inches taller than the regular Titan. And it can tow more.

In Ram-ville, two of the half-ton truck's three available engines duke it out for towing supremacy. First up is the Ram 1500's all-new third-generation V-6 EcoDiesel, which is shared with the Jeep Wrangler. The Italian-made VM Motori 3.0-liter is rated 260-horsepower at 3600 rpm and 480 lb-ft of peak torque at 1600 rpm. That's the highest torque rating of all half-ton diesels. With this engine, the Ram 1500 is rated to pull up to 12,560 pounds, which is more than other half-ton diesels. But the Ram can pull a bit more with the less expensive 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Producing 395 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 410 lb-ft of torque at 3750 rpm, the Hemi once again proves there's no replacement for displacement. It cranks up the Ram's maximum towing capacity to 12,750 pounds.

GMC Sierra 1500 | 13,200 pounds

Some day GMC may get its own hardware, but until then its full-size, half-ton Sierra 1500 shares a bunch with the Chevy Silverado. Buyers should be aware, however, that the GMC has lower maximum tow ratings. With the 277-horsepower Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel, which produces 460 lb-ft of torque at just 1500 rpm, the Sierra can tow a maximum of 9100 pounds. That's 200 pounds shy of the Chevy's capability. Like the Chevy, the GMC tows more when equipped with the available 6.2-liter V-8, which is rated 420-horsepower at 5600 rpm and the same 460 lb-ft of torque but at a higher 4100 rpm. With this engine, max towing is 13,200 pounds. The Silverado 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds with this configuration.

The Silverado can pull considerably more weight when equipped with its available 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 and the same 460 lb-ft of torque but at a higher rpm.
