American-British singer Celeste wowed viewers during the Platinum Party at the Palace with her chilling rendition of What A Wonderful World, but who is the 28 year old star?

She joined the ranks of some of the biggest names in music, including Diana Ross, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys, on stage as the nation said "thank you, ma'am" with a series of musical, theatrical and comedy performances.

Celeste, accompanied by composer Hans Zimmer, sang her heart out in a cover of Louis Armstrong’s famous track while millions of people looked on.

Celeste moved to Dagenham, east London from California aged three before spending most of her younger years in Saltdean near Brighton.

With icons such as Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald played throughout the family home, it's easy to assume that these singing powerhouses were a great influence on the rising star.

Her passion for music was clear throughout her early career, particularly when Celeste was fired from her day job in London in 2017 after skipping work too much to make music.

Then, a breakthrough moment.

Celeste was announced as the winner of the Rising Star Award at the Brits, and crowned the winner of BBC Music's Sound Of 2020.

Celeste has joined the likes of Adele, Sam Smith and Jorja Smith in securing both awards.

She said at the time: "2019 was an incredible year for me and I could never have predicted half of the things that happened."

Since then, Celeste has been compared to the singing legend Amy Winehouse, who tragically passed away in 2011, age 27, and debuted her self-titled album in January 2021.

Celeste was also the first musician to write and record an original song for the John Lewis Christmas advert, titled A Little Love.

She helped the retail giant highlight acts of kindness during the Covid-19 pandemic with its heartwarming video.

In previous years, artists including Ellie Goulding, Lily Allen and Dan Smith from the band Bastille have covered classic songs known to the nation, and in 2018 Sir Elton John performed his 1970 track Your Song.

Which means Celeste has made history as the first artist to produce an original song for the traditional ad.

Speaking about her involvement Celeste said: “I felt really honoured to be asked to take part.

"The message that everyone really wanted to get across was the idea if you’re kind and giving, then these little acts hopefully can ricochet and make the world a better place.”
