Who is not returning to Gilded Age?

The Australian actor, who played Marian's (Louisa Jacobson) ex-fiancé Tom, will not be back for the period drama's second chapter as suggested in season 1 – having proved himself unfit for Marian's hand in marriage (via Deadline).

"Nowhere is that rivalry more apparent than on East 61st Street, where Marian Brook and her thoroughly old money aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook, live opposite the stupendously rich George and Bertha Russell."

It adds: "The Russells are both fiercely ambitious, he financially, she socially, and they are determined to reach the highest echelons of New York. Meanwhile in Brooklyn, Marian’s friend and confidant Peggy Scott forges her own path in the world of the Black elite.

"In this glittering world on the brink of the modern age, will the established rules of society prevail, or will the game change entirely?"

The Gilded Age airs on Sky Atlantic, as well as the streaming service NOW, in the UK. It airs on HBO and HBO Max in the US.

Why did Amanda Peet drop out of Gilded Age?

After actress Amanda Peet backed out of the nine-episode HBO series due to scheduling conflicts in April 2020, Coon took over her role as Bertha, the astonishingly wealthy (and widely unwelcomed) newcomer infiltrating Manhattan's late 19th-century society.

Is The Gilded Age coming back for season 2?

HBO has renewed prestige period drama The Gilded Age, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, for a second season. On February 14, 2022, HBO announced the renewal, which is currently in the midst of airing its nine-episode first season.

Who is Bertha Russell based on?

Alva Vanderbilt, who inspired the social-climbing Bertha Russell (played by Carrie Coon) in the series, was one of those nouveau riche socialites who made their wealth known through their residence. Born in Alabama, she eventually married William K. Vanderbilt and settled down with him in New York and Rhode Island.

Are the Russells in The Gilded Age real?

While the two families at the center of The Gilded Age, the Van Rhijn/Brook family, and the Russell family, are not real Gilded Age New York families, they reflect the real class distinctions made between the old-money families and new-money families during that time.
