Who wrote Music for a Sushi Restaurant

Songfacts®:

  • Harry Styles wrote this funky and jazzy love song after he heard one of his Fine Line tracks playing in an LA sushi restaurant. Styles, who was dining with one of his producers, commented that it was strange music for such an eatery. He then thought to himself, "Music For a Sushi Restaurant" could be a fun album title. Eventually, he decided Harry's House had a better ring to it, but he retained "Music For a Sushi Restaurant" as this song's name.

  • Lyrically, this is a collection of racy food metaphors describing Styles' attraction for his love interest.

You're sweet ice cream, but you could use a Flake or two
Blue bubblegum twisted 'round your tongue

  • Styles wrote "Music For a Sushi Restaurant" with guitarist Mitch Rowland and Harry's House producers Tyler Johnson and Kid Harpoon.

  • The three songwriters played all the instruments (synthesizer, bass guitar, electric guitar, drum machine, drums) apart from Ivan Jackson on the trumpet. Jackson is one half of the New Jersey production duo BrassTracks, who won two Grammy Awards for their work on Chance the Rapper's single "No Problem." Jackson previously played horns on Fine Line's title track, "Lights Up," and "Watermelon Sugar."

  • This is the opening track of Harry's House. Styles originally had something different in mind to start of the album, but after writing "Sushi" he decided it fit the bill perfectly. "It becomes really obvious what the first song should be based on what you play for people when they're like, 'Oh, can I hear a bit of the music?'" he told Apple Music. "It's like, how do you want to set the tone?"

  • The song features in an Apple advertising campaign that promotes the immersive audio experience on the third generation AirPods. The playful spot is a throwback to the classic Apple "Silhouettes" ads launched in 2003 as a visually minimalist way of promoting the original iPod. Gal Muggia and Vania Heymann, the Israeli duo behind music videos like Coldplay's "Up & Up" and Dua Lipa's "We're Good," directed the commercial.

Styles asked Apple to donate his payment to the International Rescue Committee.

  • The surreal Aube Perrie-directed video stars Styles as a half-squid man. When he's washed ashore, some chefs find the merman and plan to cook him into sushi. However, when the merman shows he can sing, he becomes a star attraction and takes control of the restaurant.

"Music for a Sushi Restaurant" is a song by English singer Harry Styles, from his third studio album Harry's House (2022). It was released to hot adult contemporary radio on 3 October 2022, as the album's third single.[1] The song was written by Styles, Thomas Hull, Tyler Johnson and Mitch Rowland, while production was handled by Kid Harpoon and Johnson. A music video for the song was later released on 27 October 2022, starring Styles as a human-squid hybrid with an ability to sing.

Background[edit]

Harry Styles announced the title of his third studio album as Harry's House on 23 March 2022, unveiling its artwork, a 40-second trailer and the album's release date as 20 May 2022.[2]

Styles spoke in an interview with Leila Fadel of NPR after the release of the album and revealed the story behind the track:

"I was in a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles with my producer and one of our songs came on from the last album," he said before revealing that he thought it was “really strange music for a sushi restaurant.

"And then I was like – that would be a really fun album title, but then as the song started being made I kind of just set on Music for a Sushi Restaurant," the star continued.

Music for a Sushi Restaurant definitely would have been a great album name, but Harry's House has a better ring to it.

"So the next time you're in a sushi restaurant and this is playing you’ll be like 'Harry’s House'," Leila joked, to which Harry said: "I'll be like – this is everything I've ever wanted."[3]

Promotion[edit]

According to Billboard, it is the definite soundtrack for a new advertisement for AirPods of Apple with Spatial Audio that dropped on Thursday (June 2). The playful spot cued to the jazzy opening track from Harry's House, the new album of Harry Styles, is a bit of a throwback to some of the classic 2003 Apple “Silhouettes” ads of yore, featuring pink, red and blue dancers grooving to the bass-slapping tune along with Styles scatting along as his color-blocked body cycles through a variety of eye-popping hues.[4]

Styles then had requested that Apple to donate his artist fee for his appearance in the commercial to the International Rescue Committee (IRC). “From all of us at the IRC: Thank you to @HarryStyles and @Apple for your generous donation to the IRC,” said the organization that helps people around the world suffering through humanitarian crises in a tweet. “Working in more than 40 countries, your support will help us reach even more refugees and people in need in the world’s toughest places. Honored to have your support!”[4]

Music video[edit]

A music video for "Music for a Sushi Restaurant" was teased on 20 October 2022 through a commercial and website promoting the fictional Gill's Lounge, which is depicted in the video itself.[5][6]

On 27 October 2022, the Aube Perrie-directed music video was released. Styles stars as a human-squid hybrid that is washed ashore and found by several owners of a restaurant, who bring him to the kitchen and plan to cook him into sushi. However, Styles reveals his singing ability and takes control of the restaurant, making the owners his servants. The restaurant is turned into a lounge where Styles performs. During a performance, Styles loses his voice, and the owners later end up dragging him away and turning him into sushi. The music video ends with the lounge being turned into a sushi restaurant.[7][8]

Commercial performance[edit]
