A rare Vietnamese chicken breed called the Dong Tao, prized for its delicious meat, has one of the most thickest legs usually not seen among birds of that size. This chicken breed is endemic to the Dong Tao commune in Khoai Chau district, about 30km from Hanoi. its meat is served in expensive restaurants that cater to the wealthy. The legs themselves are a delicacy. The Dong Tao chicken has an imposing figure, a healthy body and stout legs covered with reddish scales. A male adult Dong Tao chicken can weigh up to 6 kilograms and develop legs as thick as a human’s wrist. The hens are generally white, while the cocks have colorful feathers. The chicken are very sensitive to weather changes and tend to lay fewer eggs than normal chicken. Their unhelpfully big feet makes the hatching process even more difficult, so breeders have to assist the hens in order to produce chicks. A new born chick takes eight months to one year to become a sellable bird of three to five kilograms. Dong Tao chicken (Vietnamese: gà Đông Tảo), also called Dragon Chicken, is a rare Vietnamese chicken breed with enlarged feet, that originates from the village Đông Tảo in Khoái Châu District near Hanoi.[1][2][3] Dong Tao chickens are valued as a delicacy in Vietnam, and they were once bred exclusively to be served to the royal family and mandarins.[4] They are difficult to breed as their large legs make hatching difficult, and they are also sensitive to changes in temperature. Hens often break the eggs with their bulky legs, thus eggs are usually kept in an incubator.[3][1] It takes eight months to one year until the chickens are ready for slaughtering at five to six kilograms of weight.[1] Its meat may be priced 350,000-400,000 VND per kilogram.[1] References[edit]
Are Dong Tao chickens healthy?Despite being so bulky and clumsy, Dong Tao chickens are usually in good health. Their energy levels and egg production will drop during the colder months, since they are vulnerable during temperature changes. You may also assume that their strong-looking dragon legs give them added durability, but they are fragile.
Do Dong Tao chickens lay eggs?Dong Tao hens lay 10-15 eggs for about 2-3 weeks, rest for a few weeks, and then do so again. This is less intensive than hens that are raised commercially for egg production, producing 180-300 eggs per year depending on climate. Dong Tao hens lay approximately 60 eggs per year.
How much does a Dong Tao chicken cost?This breed can usually only be purchased from Vietnam and a pair of adult Dong Tao chickens will cost $2500 – about $1250 per chicken. Hatching eggs can be found for about $8 each if you are lucky. Chicks and pullets are typically not available due to their rarity.
