I see a large amount of posts in this subreddit about Dunks but I’ve also heard people say that their quality of manufacturing is rather subpar. Like what’s the appeal? Multiple colorways? Comfort?

It’s like asking what’s the hype with any consistently retro’d sneaker from the 80’s. Tell me what’s the hype about AF1’s, NB 550, air max 9X’s, adidas forums, superstars, AJ1’s, Converse All stars, etc. and I’ll tell you what the hype is about Dunks.

SB Dunks are usually very good quality, but I agree with not understanding the hype around the standard dunk. To me they are low quality for what you pay.

You could probably trace it back to Travis Scott, once he became a fan a bunch of people and “influencers” (like Kylie) started popularizing the model and old colorways. I imagine it was a calculated move by Nike because they proceeded to give him a pair of his own dunks and then they just never stopped making them since. It feels like they drop a new CW a week. The quality is booty and the comfort is mid. They’re just popular right now because of tik tok and herd mentality, I swear every hs kid in nyc has a pair of panda dunks rn.

for quality collabs and sbs are normally good but the regular GR dunks can be poor. They are easy to wear and have loads of colour ways+ cheap for retail. they are overhyped but they still my favourite shoe for general wear

Dunks have a lot of hype i feel like because of tik tok.

They’re priced extremely cheap and therefore have cheap quality. Because of the exposure they got on tik tok people also started realizing all of the fire colorways that dunks have had over the past 15 years. Also, the dunks being released even a few years ago are 100% better quality than what we have now.

Trends come and go with sneakers. Dunks are just super easy to wear/style and they’re so many color combinations, there’s a dunk for everyone.

I think for retail it’s a decent shoe, but resell prices are kinda ridiculous for the quality you get

SB dunks are pretty good, they're a good silhouette and have some nice quality materials.

The hype for regular dunks are mostly from Instagram "influencers" thinking they're being original, and everyone following them for some reason

just purely from a wearing perspective I think the non SB dunks are one of Nike’s best shoes. I would take dunk lows over something like air force 1 lows. I like how much slimmer the dunk lows are, that alone makes them work with everything.

they’re fairly overhyped, but the truly rare and valuable SB dunks have great stories / collaborations / materials / quality to them. in a way, the hype is justified. they feel like more than just soulless color swaps. there aren’t many other shoes out there that achieve the same thing.

This is due to scarcity, both perceived and real. With the recent influx of new fans, this scarcity has crept over into the more “common” colorways and releases. With Nike SB dunks, a majority of colorways are sold exclusively at skateshops, with some being sold at select boutiques and sites like SNKRS.
