Why is there no space GREY on Magic Keyboard?

If you want a space gray Apple accessory, such as a Magic Mouse, Keyboard, or Trackpad, now is the time to get one because they’re being discontinued. On Apple’s store page, they’re currently for sale but with a “while supplies last” message (via MacRumors). Apple confirmed to The Verge that it will no longer sell the space gray accessories after stock runs out, but the silver variants will still be available.

The message is the same one that appeared on the iMac Pro before it was listed as “out of stock” for good. Now that Apple’s space gray desktop isn’t around, it seems that the company’s decided to stop making the space gray accessories. It’s a bit odd, given that Apple kept the color around when it introduced the M1 MacBooks, where external mice and keyboards might still be in demand. The discontinuation of the dark accessories does raise the question of whether it will stick around in the rumored redesign, though, or if Apple will go the colorful route it did with the new iMacs. (Let me buy a purple iPad Pro!)

The “while supplies last” label only shows up for the space gray version.

This may also mean the death of the Apple-made black Lightning cable: Apple doesn’t sell it separately, but it’s included with the space gray accessories and some Beats headphones. Truly, it’s nothing special, but now, there are three less things it comes with. I look forward to selling mine on eBay for some ridiculous price in 10 years.

You may see black, but I’m seeing gold.

Correction: A previous version of this article stated that the black Lightning cable only came with Space Gray accessories. It also comes with certain sets of Beats headphones.

Apple

The space gray editions of some iMac accessories are now only available while supplies last. Here’s what this means for the Apple accessory line-up.

Apple introduced super-cool space gray variants of its Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad when it unveiled the iMac Pro.

Initially, they were only available with the desktop computer but later, Apple sold them separately as well. Now, if you check out apple.com, you’ll see the ominous words “While supplies last” under each listing, as MacRumors spotted.

The space gray versions, which attract a $20 price premium over the silver models, will probably sell out very quickly, as customers make the grab a last chance of buying them.

Magic Keyboard in sultry space gray.

Apple

It will mean that as soon as the last stock has gone, you’ll only be able to buy Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad in silver.

The smaller keyboard without the numeric keypad attached has only ever been available in silver.

Of course, it makes sense that following the discontinuation of  the iMac Pro, that accessories that only match that model would be discontinued, too.

Although there are plenty of people who just fancied the sultry dark looks of space gray keys to go with their silver iMacs, of course.

So, that’s what this means for now. But what’s next?

Well, Apple only released the space gray accessories on their own some months after the iMac Pro’s debut, so it’s possible that the new super-colorful iMac accessories could be released as standalone purchases down the line, too. After all, if you accidentally damage your keyboard, replacing it with a silver one when you have a green iMac would look a little disappointing, no.

Please make these accessories available separately, Apple. How brilliant to have a purple iMac and a contrasting keyboard, mouse or trackpad in pink, for instance.

Or, if you’ve plumped for the safest color option (silver), you could still pep up your desktop with a gorgeous yellow or orange keyboard, for instance.

In the meantime, if you fancy the “dark mode” accessories, then you may do well to snap them up fast.

Why is there no space GREY on Magic Keyboard?

Last month, Apple listed the Space Gray accessories as available while supplies last, and the company has now removed the product pages from its website entirely, as spotted by Appleosophy. The accessories remain available in Silver, but keep in mind they have not been updated since October 2015.

The new iMac with the M1 chip is available with colorful new Magic accessories, including a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, but Apple has not yet made these accessories available for purchase on a standalone basis.
