Why is VO5 so cheap Reddit

I know the conditioners are popular for co-washing, but has anyone used the shampoos long term?

I usually use mid-range brands like Pantene or Dove, but recently I got the VO5 Kiwi Lime and Strawberry & Cream shampoos to try. The VO5 brand is very cheap, and seems very “no frill”, supposed to be very basic and do the job without any extra stuff added.

Even though during the shower, VO5 shampoos didn’t have the creamiest lather before using a VO5 conditioner (which didn’t seem that moisturizing either), once dried my hair felt so airy, silky, and lighter than usual.

I am thinking of using VO5 shampoo from now on because of how cheap it is while doing a good job, but wondering if it would damage my hair in the long run. So, does anyone else regularly use the shampoos and can vouch for them? Especially long haired people?

So, I bleach my hair blonde. I go about 4 months in between to preserve the “integrity” of my hair (it’s dead, so, this concept is so silly to me). I’ve used some high end ass shampoo and conditioners (orbe, joico, kerastasse), some gimmicky ones like shampoo bars from lush, chagrin valley, I’ve even done no-poo for nearly a year.

While on vacation and having to use the shampoo that was available to me, v05, my hair looked and felt amazing.

This lead me to some serious research on the myth of sulfates, no poo, and everything else I have tried. I am now looking at the top 5 ingredients of cheap brands and comparing them to mid brow/higher end ones I’ve used previously. It’s not different. I really think that drug store products are fine and that for some reasons we need to tar and feather anyone who uses patene pro-V is so silly. I do think it’s a sales technique that we’ve all blindly accepted as truth.

Or this yet another haircare phase I am going through.

EDIT: sorry, I thought it went without saying that your results may vary. This has worked for my hair. I am also in no way attacking/shaming folks who use salon products. I am also not saying that if you’re a hairdresser you’re greedy.

and absolutely hated it. I basically just started the CG method - I started by buying yes to cucumbers shampoo and conditioner (read later that they do have an ingredient which could gum up your hair but I didn't notice any build up) and combined with squish to condish and plopping (albeit somewhat clumsily since I'm new at it), and I really liked the results so far.

However I decided to try VO5 because of budget restraints - I used a third of a bottle, and it took FOREVER for me to detangle my hair (which is long and thick anyway), so long that my scalp started hurting, and then after my hair dried, it felt - not smooth, not soft like it usually does, but really rough and frizzy and weighed down and even greasy, or gummy or something. just - kinda gross.

my question is this: is one condition enough to tell that your hair hates a conditioner? should I be thrifty and force my hair through more conditioning with VO5 in the hopes that it adjusts? or did I possibly condition it wrong (maybe left conditioner in that should've been washed out when I did S2C)? or was it the fact that I combined it with the yes to cucumbers shampoo? and has anyone else had the same result with VO5?

any suggestions in general? sorry this post was so long (I suck at editing) but I appreciate anyone who reads through it and offers any advice!

ps hair info: I usually wash my hair only once a week. it's really long and thick. lots of curl variety - tends to get weighed down and go limp and straight in the back, but I get lots of s shaped curls around my face and on the ends. can't for the life of me figure out what curl type I am - either 2B, 2C, or 3A.

I typically wash with v05 shampoo and conditioner, replacing normal shampoo with the v05 kiwi lime squeeze clarifying shampoo once a month. After finger combing my wet hair, I will scrunch with a microfiber towel until it’s no longer dripping, then scrunch in Camille Rose Moisture Milk. Doing the same with Camille Rose Curl Maker, I air dry for about an hour or so and then diffuse!

Where do you buy it for $1? I can’t find it for less than $6.

Thank you!!! It took forever for it to become decent

Thank you sweet stranger!!

level 1

Correct me if I’m wrong but any vo5 shampoo is a clarifying shampoo, isn’t it?

level 2

The one I used is labeled clarifying shampoo! The others aren’t, I think it has a certain ingredient the others don’t

level 2

Surfectants make a clarifying shampoo. Almost all if not all of vo5s products have sulfates from my experience, so any of them can technically be clarifying. Some say acetic acid and citric acid can also help clarify, but even my cgm nym naturals shampoo has Citric acid so

I really need to try a clarifying shampoo.... Your hair is stunning. I wish I could get that volume!

level 2

Thank you!!! Picking at the roots with a wide tooth comb helps but I do have to fluff it out periodically!

I really wish they sold this in Canada or even online somewhere where that I could get it! I have heard great things

level 2

I had no idea they didn’t sell it in Canada!! Rinsing with Apple cider vinegar works much the same way, it’s just a bit smellier

level 2

Definitely!!! I have hard water at home too, which I didn’t realize for awhile!

My first thought was that you look like an angel. Second thought was wait what? I'm not religious. Pretty hair though...

Omg This is the best compliment!! Thank you kindly :,)

Shit, what an amazing hair :o

Is v05 OK for hair?

In summary, we do not recommend that you add VO5 products to your hair care product collection. They are more likely to do more harm to your hair than good because they are loaded with ingredients that can cause damage. Instead, we recommend brands like Shea Moisture, Curls, Design Essentials, or Camille Rose Naturals.

Is v05 curly girl approved?

This product is Curly Girl (CG) Method approved. Some formulas of the Alberto VO5 products contain the itchy Ms. If you are sensitive to these ingredients please check your product for Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone.

Does VO5 conditioner have silicones?

Do your conditioners contain Silicones? No our conditioners do not have silicones.

What is v05 made of?

VO5® stands for 5 Vitamin Oils (Sunflower Seed Oil, Mango Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Rosemary Leaf Oil, Chamomile Flower Oil) and was originally used to off-set the harsh conditions of Hollywood sound stages.
