Going through many threads here I have not found a definitive answer as to why the Exp II is the sport watch very few people want. They don't come up in any sport watch conversations and seem to depreciate in value rapidly in the used market. They appear to be the only large sports model that languishes on dealer's shelves. Is it simply because it doesn't have a rotating bezel? They must sell enough of them to stay in the line. Any thoughts?

Lack of a proper bezel would be my guess.

In my case, it was the first Rolex I wanted - precisely because it was a little different than the others.

I love how the 216570 can Polar-ize people 🙄

And my favorite version seems to leave some people in the dark.

I have a Polar from around 1999. It has lug holes which I very much like. But, my wife decided she likes it also. So, I had two links removed for her to wear it. I really miss it but have others to wear. As she wears it less, I hope to put the links back in and get it on my wrist. One of the things I like about it, is that it is not readily recognized as a Rolex. It allows me to wear it incognito when I feel the need.

Did the "why would anyone buy a WG watch" thread not stir up enough controversy for you?

I love the 16570 more and more each day. My AD knows that I want one and a black (tritium) dial showed up last week up but the bezel was not in 100% perfect condition the way I want it. I'm still waiting and like always I'm not in any rush.

I think that people starting to appreciate older exp 2 (16570) especially with polar dial since new one 216570 is bigger and chunkier.

Here is the bottom line reason for my questions regarding the Exp II. I bought the watch on the second day of a special vacation to Norway with my wife to go round trip on the Hurtigruten ferry from Bergen to Kerkenes and back. I would admit I really wanted a GMT or Sub but a black Exp II was the only sport watch the dealer had. Tt did look very nice. I took it. This was a big, big purchase for me even at the tax rebate price. On day nine of the boat ride near Tromso, my wife suffered what appears to be a small stroke. Two days in the hospital with multiple tests such as a CAT scan, MRI and EEG plus when we checked out had to pay for four nights plus food that were part of the boat trip plus airfares to get back to Bergen. I have not received the bill from the hospital yet but Medicare pays nothing for foreign hospital expenses. I probably bought a VERY nice new car, I'm guessing at least $20K-$25K. I am trying as hard as I can to love the watch but I will probable end up selling it ... if anybody wanted this model, at a fair price. BTW, my wife appears to be 98% OK now. More doctor's visits now that we are home.

Thanks

Why Rolex Explorer 2 is not popular?

The 16570 receives plenty of love from me. Waiting for its return from RSC service to keep it going for another decade or more. Its probably my favorite model. I tried on the 42mm 6-digit reference, my it was a little too large for my taste.

Love this old tritium model. Almost vintage now. Die hard Sub guy but this fits in nicely with my Subs. If they made a White dialed Sub then you know...but wanted a white dialed sport watch. I have owned 4 of these over the years so it has come in and out of favor with me.

I have great love for the explorer. As a young active family man the Rolex SS sports models appeal to me greatly and its the explorer II 216570 Im drawn to for several reasons

1) its a lot less common that a submariner and goes under the radar
2) its a tribute to the original 1655 with the black dial and orange gmt hand
3) its a robust sports watch yet in my opnion is fitting in a suit as it is at home in active wear
4) functional with date and gmt
5) fantastic bracelet and clasp
6) superb accuracy guaranteed with new Rolex models
8) I can pick one up BNIB with stickers on for more than 10% less than AD price

No love? Big love here. But I only need of them. So that's what I've got. It was my first Rolex and as my collection stands, if I had to keep just the one, it would also be my last Rolex.

Explorer II is a great watch. Asking myself the same question: "why it's not as popular in the Rolex lineup". Of course one can get GMT II for almost the same price. But Exp II is totally different looking watch and can be used in collection with others. I'm contemplating to purchase one as my third Rolex(Land).
The popularity for this watch will change once a couple of celebrities will wear it in some high profile events then ExpII will take off the shelves like hot potatoes especially in Asia.

Why Rolex Explorer 2 is not popular?

The Rolex Explorer II Ref 16570 is something of a paradox. In production for 22 years, it is not a rare watch by any means. And yet it is very popular. So much so that it was the top-selling steel watch on Chrono24 in 2020.

Will the Rolex Explorer 2 go up in value?

The value of the Rolex Explorer II has grown by 246% between 1994 and 2016, meaning it has more than tripled. In total the price increased by 5,000 € during this time. Over the last 10 years, the average growth has been 317 € or 5.8% per year. ... VALUE DEVELOPMENT..

Is Rolex discontinuing the Explorer 2?

Originally purchased in December 2018 and under Rolex warranty until January 2024. The Rolex Explorer II 216570 has recently been discontinued and replaced with the similar Explorer II 226570.

What is the purpose of the Rolex Explorer 2?

First released in 1971 as a watch designed specifically for speleologists (cave explorers), the Rolex Explorer II was intended to be an extension of the original time-only Explorer model and these two watches are still offered alongside each other to this day.
