Credit cards are somewhat waterproof, and very water-resistant. A quick dip in water will not ruin or affect a credit card, nor will a swimming pool, a washing machine, an iced coffee, or a puddle. Credit cards are designed to be durable - the EMV chip and circuitry inside your credit card are encased in epoxy resin and sealed between the card’s two plastic layers, so water can’t reach the electronics. And if water does happen to get through the glue and plastic, you would be able to use it again as soon as it’s completely dry. There is no power source inside a credit card, so nothing will short or spark due to water exposure.

That’s not to say you can never, ever ruin your credit card by exposure to water. If you habitually abuse your credit card - such as frequently running it through a hot wash cycle, for example - you should expect some damage to the card over time. The two plastic sheets may eventually separate due to the heat. This would ultimately make the card unusable. You might also see credit card damage if your card was left in water for an extended period of time.

So, don’t worry about a single instance of falling into a pool with your wallet in your pocket, or forgetting to take your credit card out of your pants pocket before doing laundry. The water won’t destroy your credit card. In fact, this could be one reason to carry your actual credit card rather than only using a mobile wallet app on your phone – a phone might not survive a dip in the pool.

Credit cards can definitely get ruined in the washing machine, depending on the type of fabric softener you use.

Do credit cards work after being washed? Usually, yes. But do credit cards work after being dried? That’s a different problem. Credit card magnetic strip damage happens when the card has gone from the washer to the dryer, for example. The heat from the dryer, as well as the constant tumbling, can leave the card bent or warped. If this happens to your card, the only remedy is to contact the credit card issuer and request a new card.
