CLAREMORE, Okla. – The 2022 spring thoroughbred racing season has concluded at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs with several firsts for the racetrack, including dual Horse of the Meet honors and a career first for the meet’s Leading Jockey.

A total of 252 thoroughbred races were held from March 21 through May 25, down from the proposed 270 due to weather-related cancellations. More than $23 million was handled on and off the track during the 2022 season, slightly up from $22 million in 2021. Will Rogers Downs saw an average total handle per day of more than $806,000.

In a Will Rogers Downs first, Horse of the Meet honors were awarded concurrently to two Oklahoma-breds who finished the season with remarkably similar race records. Shannon C, a 7-year-old gelding owned by B and S Racing and trained by Scott Young, won the $55,000 TRAO Classic Sprint, finished second in the $50,000 Highland Ice Stakes and won an allowance race at the meet. Dicey, a 6-year-old mare co-owned by Jay Lewis and trainer Pat Swan, won the $55,000 Miranda Diane Stakes, finished second in the $50,000 Wilma Mankiller Stakes and won an allowance race at the meet.

Both Shannon C and Dicey earned exactly $63,202 for their 3 2-1-0 records.

Kylee Jordan, an apprentice rider in her first season at Will Rogers Down, was named the 2022 meet’s Leading Jockey. Jordan received 44 wins from 166 mounts and rode 13 more winners than the second leading rider, including a stakes win on co-Horse of the Meet Dicey in the Miranda Diane Stakes, a career first for the young jockey.

"For me, the highlight of this meet was Jordan’s accomplishment as the meet's leading rider,” said John Lies, racing secretary and track announcer for Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs. “It inspired a positive narrative and demonstrated the hard work and dedication put in by young professionals such as herself who ride at numerous tracks."          

Trainer Scott Young, a longtime leader at Will Rogers Downs, earned yet another Leading Trainer honor with 20 wins from 81 starters, with at least seven more than the next leading trainers, including a stakes win with co-Horse of the Meet Shannon C. His stock finished in the money at a 72% clip overall.

Trainer Steve Williams finished up the meet as the Leading Owner, with his horses amassing 10 wins, 13 seconds and 23 thirds from 122 total starters.

Edward J. DeBartolo (at that time, the owner of Balmoral, Thistledown and Louisiana Downs) built Remington Park in Oklahoma City as a $100 million showcase for Thoroughbred racing. Will Rogers Downs will kickoff its 2022 live American Quarter Horse, Paint Horse and Appaloosa meeting on September 12.

CLAREMORE, OK–JULY 28, 2200–Will Rogers Downs 2022 American Quarter Horse, Paint Horse and Appaloosa meet to begin September 12.

Highlighting the upcoming Fall meet at Will Rogers Downs will be a shift in the race days and strong purse levels for all breeds. 

Will Rogers Downs has announced a new opening day of Monday September 12. Race days will shift from the traditional Friday-Sunday to Mondays and Tuesdays in September and then in October and November race days will be Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

The shift in days was made in hopes of increasing off-track handle through simulcasting when competition is not as strong, and fans and handicappers are looking for wagering opportunities.

This will also allow jockeys and trainers the ability to go back and forth between meets more easily as many of them compete at other tracks. The fall race meet will culminate with a card loaded with stakes races on Tuesday, Nov. 15. 

Also, this fall horsemen will notice an increase in purse levels across the board with maidens running for $16,000 (QH) and $8,000 (P/A).

The stakes schedule includes the Mystery Futurity and Derby, four races from the AQHA’s Bank of America Racing Challenge program, the Black Gold Futurity and the Black Gold Oaks and the Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity Championship. 

Another benefit for horsemen this meet will be that hair tests will be good for 90 days and will be reciprocal between Will Rogers Downs and Lone Star Park. Testing will begin August 3 and one test will give a horse the opportunity to start at either track where a specific race’s condition might be more beneficial for a horse that cannot get in at the other track.
