Will The Sims 4 be free again in 2022?

EA and Maxis are making The Sims 4 free-to-play.

The Sims 4's base game will soon be free to download and play for everyone.

EA and Maxis have announced that The Sims 4 will be free to download for all new players from October 18, 2022. Better yet, that’s across all platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

“EA and Maxis have welcomed millions of The Sims players over the years,” said an official announcement. “With The Sims 4 base game going free, the team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful experiences for players, and will continue to develop and release packs, Kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future.”

It sounds as though EA and Maxis have plenty of content lined up for The Sims 4, and that begins with a special-edition stream, Behind The Sims Summit on October 18.

“Players can learn more about what’s in the works during a special-edition stream,” said EA and Maxis. The upcoming stream can be viewed live on The Sims YouTube and Twitch channels at 10 am PDT on October 18.

The Sims 4 was released on September 2, 2014, and has seen 31 million players worldwide since its release. But the game was met with mixed reviews in the early days, with many outlets criticizing a lack of features when compared to The Sims 3. Many, many expansion packs have followed since then.

IGN’s The Sims 4 review gave it 7/10 and said: “The Sims 4 succeeds in being a deep and complex game when it comes to Sim interactions, with lots of entertaining emotional potential. The emotions system and its contextual actions are really strong and added to my investment in my Sims as well as my enjoyment from watching ridiculousness unfold. Plus, excellent building tools make architecture more fun than ever. Overall, it’s a good start to what may eventually be expanded into a great Sims game, but it’s not there yet.”

The Sims 4 High School Years Screens

The Sims 4 going free is likely to inject some more life into the eight-year-old game. Thankfully, existing players won’t miss out, either, as EA and Maxis are giving away the Desert Luxe Kit free to anyone who purchases the game before October 17.

“With the Desert Luxe Kit, Sims can relax in their modern oasis with luxurious indoor and outdoor furniture, inspired by the natural landscape of the Southwestern desert and materials like stone and wood.”

EA announced today that starting next month, the base Sims 4 game on all platforms will be free to download and play. It also announced an upcoming livestream in which Maxis will lay out its plans for the game’s future updates.

The Sims 4 is the latest entry in the long-running and incredibly popular life simulation franchise. Like past games in the series, it lets players create their own characters and homes, then watch these digital people live out full lives and help them get jobs, find friendship, or even trap them all in pools to slowly die. Fun stuff. The Sims 4 might be the “newest” game in the series, but it’s not young. It was first released eight years ago in September 2014. Since then, EA has released over 50 pieces of paid DLC for the game in various forms, including large expansions and smaller stuff like kit packs.

The most recent expansion, High School Years, launched in July of this year. It was fairly well received, once EA, uh…removed all the bugs causing incestuous relationships. To be clear: None of this DLC or expansion content is suddenly going free for everyone. But the original base Sims 4 game — released nearly a decade ago — will be completely free to download and play starting October 18, 2022. And that’s not just on PC. EA announced Sims 4 will be free on EA’s Origin store on PC, Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Mac.

“Our community has continued to inspire us with the billions of unique Sims they’ve created, the countless stories they’ve told, and the remarkable builds they’ve designed,” said EA in its official announcement of the news. “We’re excited to continue to welcome in more players than ever to create new stories, and explore without boundaries. The Sims has always been about celebrating new ways to play and offers so many possibilities to discover.”

For folks who already own The Sims 4, EA announced that current owners will get the new Desert Luxe kit for free if they log in to the game before October 17.

As for the future of The Sims 4, Maxis seem to have big plans, saying it will continue to update the game and add new content to it for the “foreseeable future.” And we will learn more about the future of The Sims 4 soon, as EA also announced today that it will be airing a special livestream — the Behind The Sims Summit — on October 18.
