What is the worlds most translated website

Most organisations are aware of the importance of having a multilingual website. They know that translating the website into many languages is the most obvious way to reaching to a wider audience of people. Some organisations have the possibility and feasibility to translate their website into more languages than others and we were curious to learn which website supports the most languages in the world.

We have researched and compiled a shortlist of the most translated websites, and we were surprised by the findings. We decided to share the list with our blog readers.

World’s record: Jehovah’s Witnesses

If there would be a World Guinness Record for the world’s most translated website in 2022, then the winner would be Jehovah’s Witnesses website.

It might sound shocking and unbelievable, but the jw.org website is available in 1,055 languages in 2022. That makes jw.org the most translated website with a world record that will be hard to be beaten in the foreseeable future.

For comparison, BBC news is available in only 44 languages.

Second most: Wikipedia 

If you were wondering what’s the second most translated website in the world, the answer is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, created and edited by worldwide volunteers and it delivers content and information in 326 different languages. Here you can find a detailed list of all the languages supported by Wikipedia.

Third in the list: Google

The websites of the tech giants that operate worldwide such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Samsung, etc are also translated into over 100 languages. Google’s search page is available in 149 languages, and that makes Google’s search page the third most translated website in 2022.

The most translated website

Surprisingly, the most translated website in the world is not Facebook, Twitter, Google, or Wikipedia. Jw.org, the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses is the most translated website in the world. The website is available in more than 1032 languages and it offers publications in more than 750 languages. Also, some publications are available in more than 100 sign languages.

Update December 1, 2019 - The website is now available in 1006 languages.

Update June 8, 2021 - The website is now available in 1032 languages.

The website also offers a bible called “New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures” and other Bible-based content for free.

It is even more surprising to know that some of the languages in which the website is available are spoken by less than 10000 people in the world.

Jehovah’s Witnesses is a small Christian denomination with 8.5 million members ( 8,579,909 at the time of writing this post ) having distinct believes from the mainstream Christians. They are famous for their door-to-door preaching.

We come from hundreds of ethnic and language backgrounds, yet we are united by common goals. Above all, we want to honor Jehovah, the God of the Bible and the Creator of all things. We do our best to imitate Jesus Christ and are proud to be called Christians. Each of us regularly spends time helping people learn about the Bible and God’s Kingdom. The most translated website in the world — jw.org, the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses — includes content in more than 1,030 languages, including many Indigenous languages considered at risk of dying out.

Among them in Arizona is Navajo, spoken by an estimated 170,000. Additional Indigenous languages can be found in Blackfoot, Cherokee, Choctaw, Hopi and Central Alaskan Yupik.

Curtis and Mable Yellowhorse, who live on the reservation, were raised during a time when everyone spoke Navajo in the home. Mable states: “The older people, maybe that’s all they know is the (Navajo) language. They don’t know English so that’s what they speak.” Reflecting on changing times and the influence of technology, Mable continues: “It’s the younger generation; they don’t speak the language. They speak English mostly.”

For Curtis and Mable, the Navajo publications on jw.org have helped them to embrace their culture while also deepening their faith. Mable adds: “Some people think that (the Bible is) just for the white people or other people; it’s not for Navajo, but we know that’s not true. So, getting to know Jehovah in the Navajo way — it’s got a lot of feeling. It touches your heart a lot.”

Curtis, a volunteer who assisted with the Navajo translation work, states, “When you read it in English, it doesn’t really go that far into your heart, but when you’re reading Navajo, it really goes (deep) and touches your heart.” Mable, who was in her late 60s when she first learned to read and write Navajo with the help of Jehovah’s Witnesses, states: “I really educated myself with the Navajo language. … Before I learned Navajo, I would look at the Navajo Bible, and I would think, ‘What is all this gibberish?’ But now that I learned how to read it, it’s exciting!”

“Translating Indigenous languages is a labor of love for all those involved and for our organization,” said Robert Hendriks, the U.S. Spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “The work is challenging and time-consuming. But our goal isn’t to make a profit, it’s to provide the Bible’s comforting message clearly and accurately to as many people as possible.”

Sharing the Bible’s message of hope and comfort in the local Navajo community has been a powerful experience for the Yellowhorses.

Curtis concludes: “I feel that Jehovah is really interested in the Navajo people or people with languages that (are) not used worldwide. So, he’s taking a special interest in us. And I’m really grateful, the Navajo People are grateful, the (ones) that we talked to and show them our literature and our videos … they appreciated that this group of people (Jehovah’s Witnesses) are interested in us. They’re interested in me … in my language. So, they have a great appreciation for it, and we thank Jehovah for all this.”
