At first glance, Saturday's nonconference matchup between No. 16 Ole Miss and independent Liberty might not seem like must-watch TV. Luckily, Sporting News is here to set the record straight. The Rebels and Flames' meeting provides several captivating storylines, not least of which is the quarterback battle between Ole Miss' Matt Corral and Liberty's Malik Willis. The Rebels gunslinger remains one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2021, throwing 2,202 yards and 15 touchdowns to two interceptions while adding 538 rushing yards and 10 more scores. Willis, meanwhile, has 1,986 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to six interceptions. Like Corral, Willis is also a gifted runner, rushing for 697 yards and nine touchdowns. Freeze — who had beaten Alabama Nick Saban in both 2014 and '15 — left the program after it was discovered he made calls to an escort service on a university-issued phone. He has since enjoyed a resurgence at Liberty, leading the Flames to records of 8-5, 10-1 and 7-2 in 2019, '20 and '21, respectively. It's also worth watching how Ole Miss responds to an emotionally draining loss to Auburn, a game in which coach Lane Kiffin's aggressive play calls three times resulted in turnovers on downs in the Auburn red zone. The Rebels are almost certainly out of contention for the SEC West championship, but how they get up for this game will go a long way in how this team finishes the season. Ole Miss will face Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl for their final game of the season. Although Mississippi State is coming off a dominant 55-10 win over Tennessee State last week, they will be challenged by the Rebels' aggressive defense. Quarterback Matt Corral threw for a season-high 326 yards with two touchdowns during Ole Miss' 31-17 victory over Vanderbilt. He frequently connected with wide reciever Jahcour Pearson, who made four receptions for 101 yards. He also found leading reciever Dontario Drummond for 79 yards with a touchdown. Rebels' leading rusher Jerrion Ealy, who rushed for 55 yards with a touchdown last week, will drive the ball on the ground. While Corral is expected to rely on his receivers, he will be pressured by the Bulldogs' defense. Linebacker Tyrus Wheat leads Mississippi State with six sacks, followed by Nathan Pickering and Randy Charlton who both recorded four. Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes also leads the Bulldogs with three interceptions. A win against the Rebels will extend the Bulldogs' win streak, and boost their chances at earning a competitive bowl game matchup. As quarterback Will Rogers threw for 391 yards with five touchdowns last week, he will continue relying on wide receiver Makai Polk, who leads Mississippi state with 891 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
