Science Class VII>Motion & Time>Improve your learning:>Q 1

1. Rest and Motion:

(i) Rest: When the position of a body with respect to its surroundings does not change with time.

(ii) Motion: When the position of a body with respect to a reference point changes with time, the body is said to be in motion.

2. Types of motion:

(i) Periodic motion: A repetitive motion, which repeats itself after fixed intervals of time.

(ii) Non-periodic motion: A motion which does not repeat itself after regular intervals of time.

(iii) Oscillatory motion: A motion in which an object describes to and fro or back and forth motion along the same path.

(iv) Rectilinear motion: A motion described by a body along a straight line.

(v) A freely falling stone, a car moving on a straight road, a train moving on a straight rail track are the examples of rectilinear motion.

(vi) Curvilinear motion: Motion of a body in a curved line.

(vii) Circular motion: A motion in which a body moves about a fixed axis without changing the position of this axis.

(viii) Rotational motion: A body is said to be in rotational motion when every particle of that body is in circular motion about a fixed axis.

(ix) A spinning wheel, a charkha, a spinning top, a spinning potter's wheel, a rotating ceiling fan and a spinning wheel of a bicycle, etc., are the examples of rotatory motion.

3. Time:

(i) Time is defined as a gap between two events. Its SI unit is second.

(ii) Stopwatch: A watch which can be started or stopped when desired. It is used to measure small intervals of time.

(iii) Digital clock: A clock in which time is displayed in digits by electronic circuits.

4. Speed:

(i) The distance travelled per unit time is termed as speed. Its SI unit is m/s.

(ii) A speedometer shows the speed in kilometre per hour.

(iii) 1 kmh=518ms

When the body is in motion it does not change its position with respect to time True or false?

A speedometer is a gauge that measures and displays the instantaneous speed of a vehicle. An odometer is an instrument used for measuring the distance travel...

In this video, we will analyse when a body is said to be in motion and when it is considered as rest. And if the body is in motion, then what kind of motion...

In physics, you must have come across the terms - acceleration, velocity and speed. But can you differentiate them? We will do it in a systematic tabular col...

We studied the different types of motion with various examples. In this DIY activity, we will do a simple model, which exhibits different motions. Discover m...

At what speed does a normal human being walk? And what are the different speeds we observe in nature? Let's watch this video to visualise the fast and the slow.

In this video, we measure the speed of light at home with just three household items. All ages can perform this fun experiment. You get to eat some chocolate...

In order to continue enjoying our site, we ask that you confirm your identity as a human. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
