Who plays in fiesta bowl

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Oklahoma State Cowboys hope to add one more win to the resume this season when the teams meet in the Fiesta Bowl. Both teams fell just short of the College Football Playoff this season, but this bowl game still means a lot in college football circles.

The Irish saw Brian Kelly depart just before the final week of the season and will want to play hard for new coach Marcus Freeman. These games are typically a great recruiting opportunity for the Irish, so expect a big performance from this group.

The Cowboys will be kicking themselves over not making the playoff, although Mike Gundy has shown he can lead this program to that level in the future. The biggest question for Oklahoma State will be whether its offense can move the ball against Notre Dame’s stout defense.

Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma State: 2022 Fiesta Bowl TV info

Game date: Saturday, January 1st
Game time: 1:00 p.m. ET
TV channel: ABC

The game is currently listed as a Pick ‘Em at DraftKings Sportsbook, with the total set at 45.5.

The Fiesta Bowl will feature a pair of 11-win programs when the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys on New Year’s Day from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET and the game will air on ESPN.

Notre Dame (11-1) outperformed expectations in what was expected to be a down year for the program’s standards with their lone loss coming to the Cincinnati Bearcats in early October. The Fighting Irish will have a new look on the sideline with Marcus Freeman taking over as the head coach after Brian Kelly unsuccessfully tried to bring him to the LSU Tigers to be his defensive coordinator.

Oklahoma State (11-2, 8-1 Big 12) knocked off their in-state rival Oklahoma Sooners in the regular season finale to reach the conference championship game where they fell a yard short of beating the Baylor Bears. The Cowboys had their struggles offensively this season and relied on their rushing attack, but they made up for it with one of the best defenses in the country statistically to guide Oklahoma State to their first 11-win season in a decade.

The Fiesta Bowl celebrates its golden anniversary on Jan. 2, 2021, but it'll be a celebration lacking noise.

A year ago, the Fiesta Bowl played host to the College Football Playoff semifinal between Ohio State and Clemson. This season, it's back in its normal role as a New Year's Six bowl, lowering the marquee nature of its matchup, which in this edition will feature No. 25 Oregon (4-2) against No. 10 Iowa State (8-3). Due to COVID-19's rise in Arizona into the winter months, the 2021 Fiesta Bowl will also be played without fans.

The Ducks weren't even supposed to play in the Pac-12 Championship, but COVID-19 issues pushed Oregon into action Saturday, and a win brought them to the Fiesta Bowl. Iowa State couldn't win the Big 12 title against Oklahoma but still gets a chance at a New Year's Six bowl.

Here, you'll find the info you need to know about watching the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2, 2021, along with what to expect from the teams chosen to play in the game.

When is the Fiesta Bowl 2021?

  • Date:  Jan. 2
  • Time: 4 p.m. ET
  • TV broadcast:  ESPN
  • Location:  State Farm Stadium, Glendale, Arizona

The 2021 Fiesta Bowl marks the 50th playing of the game since its inception in 1971. The game has always been played in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and it's been in Glendale at the now-named State Farm Stadium since 2007.

Who plays in the Fiesta Bowl 2021?

The 2021 Fiesta Bowl will feature the Big 12 runner-up, No. 10 Iowa State, against the Pac-12 champion, No. 25 Oregon.

What to know about Iowa State vs. Oregon

Lucky Ducks

Oregon wasn't supposed to play in the Pac-12 Championship game. The Ducks were second in their division to Washington. But the Huskies were hit hard by COVID-19, which pushed Oregon into the title game against USC.

Not only did the Ducks get to play USC, but they won the conference championship game for a second consecutive year. That was good enough to play in the Fiesta Bowl.

Brock's the rock

Iowa State's offensive leader is junior quarterback Brock Purdy. He's been a three-year starter for the Cyclones, and in the last two seasons, he's been especially good.

Combining Purdy's 2019 and 2020 stats gives a total 45 touchdown passes compared to 18 interceptions. He's also a career 66.1 percent passer. And he's a solid runner, too, surpassing 240 yards on the ground in all three of his college seasons.

Three-Duck ground attack

Dating back to the Chip Kelly days, Oregon has been known for attacking on the ground both via the quarterback's legs and with multiple running backs. That's the case in 2020, although statistical totals aren't especially impressive due to only six games for the Ducks so far.

Quarterback Tyler Shough has averaged 4.2 yards per carry this season, while running back Travis Dye (7.0 ypc) and running back CJ Verdell (4.4 ypc) have teamed with Shough to provide plenty of danger out of the backfield.

Where is Fiesta Bowl being played in 2021?

As usual, the Fiesta Bowl is being played in the greater Phoenix area, and like every year since 2007, it's at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

With COVID-19 cases on the rise in Arizona, it was announced in early December that there'll be no fans at the Fiesta Bowl. That's consistent with the recent order that stopped fans from attending games of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.

New Year's Six Bowl schedule 2021

All of this year's New Year's Six Bowl games are televised on ESPN.

Date Bowl Matchup Time (ET)
Dec. 30 Cotton Bowl (6) Oklahoma vs. (7) Florida 7:15 p.m.
Jan. 1 Peach Bowl (8) Cincinnati vs. (9) Georgia 12:30 p.m.
Jan. 1 Rose Bowl (1) Alabama vs. (4) Notre Dame 5:00 p.m.
Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl (2) Clemson vs. (3) Ohio State 8:45 p.m.
Jan. 2 Fiesta Bowl (25) Oregon vs. (10) Iowa State 4:00 p.m.
Jan. 2 Orange Bowl (5) Texas A&M vs. (13) North Carolina 8:00 p.m.

Notre Dame and Oklahoma State each went into championship weekend feeling like they had a chance to reach the College Football Playoff. A loss in the Big 12 Championship for the Cowboys and an Alabama win over Georgia in the SEC Championship eliminated the possibility for both teams.

The two teams will play now for pride, facing off in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day.

No. 5 Notre Dame (11-1) just missed out on the playoff, losing only to No. 4 Cincinnati earlier in the season, but it was unable to make the climb back into the picture after the Oct. 2 loss. No. 9 Oklahoma State (11-2) was inches away from winning the conference title, just missing the pylon on a diving effort by running back Dezmon Jackson.

Despite their long histories on the gridiron, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State have never before faced off in a college football game.

This will be the 51st edition of the Fiesta Bowl. The game has always been played in the Phoenix, Arizona, area, and this will be its 16th time being played in Glendale, the home of the Arizona Cardinals.

Who plays in the Fiesta Bowl 2022?

This year, No. 5 Notre Dame will take on No. 9 Oklahoma State. The Fighting Irish will be making their first Fiesta Bowl appearance since 2016, when they lost 44-28 to Ohio State. What to know about Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma State?

Shutdown Cowboy defense

The Big 12 has developed a reputation as an offensive-heavy conference in recent years. The Cowboys have defied that stereotype in 2021.

Only Wisconsin (236.7) and Georgia (253.2) have allowed fewer yards per game than the Cowboys (278.4) among all FBS teams. They are also tied for the seventh-fewest points allowed per game at 16.8.

Oklahoma State has been especially dominant in the run game, having allowed the fifth-fewest yards per game at 91.2. The Cowboys held teams to fewer than 70 rushing yards in six games, tied with Georgia and Wisconsin for the second-most such games in FBS, behind only San Diego State's eight.

First game for head coach Marcus Freeman

Notre Dame is one of the storied programs in college football, and does not often experience turnover among its coaching staff. On Jan. 1, it will experience a first in the program, as Marcus Freeman will become the first full-time Notre Dame coach to begin his Fighting Irish head coaching career in a bowl game.

The only comparable situation for the Fighting Irish came back in 2004, when Tyrone Willingham was fired following the end of the season and Kent Baer was named the interim head coach. Baer coached the Insight Bowl, and lost 38-21 to Oregon State, but did not return as head coach.

Plenty of rushing options

Jack Coan and Spencer Sanders were both solid for Notre Dame and Oklahoma State, respectively, this season, but these two offenses have been orchestrated through the ground.

Notre Dame's offense had been led by running back Kyren Williams, who rushed for team-highs with 204 carries, 995 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. The Fighting Irish also had Tyler Buchner, Chris Tyree and Logan Diggs rush for at least 200 yards during the season.

The Cowboys were led in large part by Jaylen Warren, who rushed 237 times for 1,134 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He was injured and missed the Big 12 Championship, with Spencer Sanders and Jackson shouldering the load, rushing for a combined 64 yards on 32 carries.

Fiesta Bowl odds

Notre Dame is currently listed as a 2.5-point, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
