Here’s some VERY VERY cool news: VANS AND DEFCON RESURRECT THE SK8-HI NOTCHBACK PRO While DEFCON origins remain classified, the projects stamped with their namesake speak volumes. Vans reunites with the stealth collective this spring to resurrect the Vans Sk8-Hi Notchback Pro, engineered with three new Multicam® patterns, Arid™, Tropic™, and Black™, specifically designed to reduce the visual and near-Infrared signature of a person in three distinct environments. As an ode to past projects, the Vans DEFCON Multicam® capsule comes full circle, completing the footwear outfit with new apparel fabrics originally developed for the US Army and tactical law enforcement.
DEFCON has evolved into a multifaceted study group responsible for the marketing and development of some of the leading brands in the tactical and streetwear worlds. Through both natural curiosity and fascination turned obsession, DEFCON has perfected their craft in media modifications, establishing their repute as a standalone brand. 303 Boards 510 Skateboarding Active Ride Shop

As a clandestine group with links to Vans’ Syndicate line, DEFCON’s offerings (like the Notchback from 2013) are concerned with bringing the tactical military tech to daily wear. Their contribution to this trio of Notchbacks has made the sneakers ready for battle. The shoes have been crafted with materials that keep your infrared signature down – meaning that anyone using heat-seeking technology won’t be able to distinguish them from the surrounding terrain. And it doesn’t stop there – they’re also built with Wolverine Pig Suede (which is both waterproof and flame retardant), they have gusseted tongues, they’re lined with Dri-Lex for moisture management and their foxing tape is knurled for durability. Most skate shoes are built to take a beating, but these are uniquely equipped to handle whatever you can fire at them – even if that happens to be actual fire. Now ReadingDefcon X Vans Sk8-Hi Notchback Pro These shoes rock for everyday wear in an urban environment. I’ve even taken them on the occasional day hike, and they proved to be very comfortable and provided more-than-adequate ankle support. Though I wouldn’t use them for day hikes that involve difficult terrain, they’re well-made shoes, and possess a high cool factor. Colors: MAS (Maritime Assault Suit) Grey was introduced by London Bridge Trading as a color variant that would provide optimum environmental blending for Navy SEALs to wear while conducting VBSS (vessel boarding search and seizure) and maritime operations. The color gray has a history of working well to prevent identification, and works well within most environments due to its lack of contrast across the color spectrum. Given the obvious benefits of the color, and this shade in particular, Navy SEALs began utilizing MAS Grey for nighttime operations in addition to maritime operations. Originally developed for SEAL Team 6/DEVGRU, very few MAS Grey items were ever issued to Naval Special Warfare operators. Vans Syndicate MAS Grey shoesSizes available: Standard 7 to 14 Weight: I couldn’t locate an official weight on these shoes, but I’m not too worried about that. It’s not like you’re walking around with cinder blocks on your feet. These shoes weigh just enough to let you know you’re wearing a built-to-last, rugged pair of shoes. Upper material: Premium pig suede and MAS Grey ballistic textile paneling with blueish-grey suede overlays. Outsole material: Rugged reverse waffle tread outsole for increased traction. Fit and sizing: Fit is true to the standard sizing. No need to order up or down a size. MSRP: $180. If you shop around, you can find them as low as $160. Unique features: The tongues have velcro patches that can fit 1 x 3″ moral patches, allowing you to customize their look (the lightning-bolt patch shown in the photos is included with the shoes). They also have the LBT logo tag on the inside stitching and a subdued American flag on the outside. The soles have an inverted waffle tread which sticks out, providing much more grip than the usual flat waffle pattern found on Vans. Application: Everyday wear, skateboarding, “over-the-beach” shoe, casual day hikes. Pros: These shoes are badass and will make anyone feel like they’re about to embark on a classified mission. These shoes fuse tactical performance with skateboarding style to produce all-terrain skate assault weapons for your feet. Cons: These can be hard to find, but they are out there. You just have to search for them. -Scott (featured image courtesy of LBT)
We're not sure how DEFCON does what it does, but it manages to regularly, if rarely, pull off some damned cool brand collaborations. This year, the tactical street style brand (or street style tactical brand?) dips back in the Vans well and comes up with a tweak to its successful SK8-Hi Notchback Pro sneakers. Instead of the contrasting white foxing used on last year's Notchback, this limited run features black foxing that compliments the MultiCam Black patterned upper. Foxing is the wide band at ground level that surrounds and seals the sole to the upper. If you already knew that, you're smarter than us. We had to look it up. The small change moves the updated DEFCON Vans away from a skater look and into something a lot more subdued styling that'll fly a little lower under the radar when it comes to uniform regs, we gather. There are other styling touches that may interest our readers, such as a Velcro patch on the tongue and FRONT TOWARD ENEMY labeled footbeds. But, if the demand for these is similar to the bum rush for last year's trio of DEFCON's MultiCam Vans, they won't last long. The shoes go on sale at the DEFCONGROUP.COM webstore at 6:00 AM PST this Saturday, November 10th, 2018, and will also be available through select retailers, such as Supreme shops. We're told DEFCON's site will list its retail partners, should you arrive after the mothership is sold out. Details about the shoes from DEFCON:
