Why chicken means so much to me author?

In the following I am going to analyze Junior´s emotions and feelings.

The first stylistic device can be found on page 17, ,,I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation´´,ll.8 ,this example is an enumeration. This enumeration shows how sad Junior really feels. The reader becomes impressions of Junior´s daily life situation and about how poor he is.It seems like he feels like something that isn´t important for everyone. From line 14-15 the reader becomes impressions about junior´s empty stomach and what he would give to have a real meal again. He is sad and helpless.Furthermore the author uses a climax page 17 ,ll. 6 and 7 , ,,But I can’t do that.Nobody can do that, not even the hungriest magician in the world. In this example the author uses the climax to show, that Junior only wants to live a good life and not the life he is living. He just wants to be in a normal family and living in a family where food is something normal. On page 19 the author uses an enumeration to show that Oscar his dog really feels bad and that it makes him really sad, too.Junior is scared about losing Oscar, because it is the only one who truly understands him.He is really sad about Oscars situation and how he feels ,,I figured he´d be okay with some rest, but then he started vomiting, and diarrhea blasted out of him, and he had these seizures where his little legs just kicked and kicked and kicked. ´´ Moreover  there is a repetition ,,There was nothing I could do to save Oscar.Nothing.Nothing.Nothing´´,ll.14. By using this repetition the author gives the impression to the reader that Junior can’t do nothing at all.He is helpless.helpless and Sad by thinking about how Oscar has to die ,because of the family´s poorness, who can’t pay oscars medicines. On page 21 there is an alliteration ,,I wanted to punch my dad in the face.I wanted to punch him in the nose and make him bleed.I wanted to punch him in the eye and make him blind.I wanted to kick him in the balls and make him pass out.´´,ll.1. By using this stylistic device the reader really understands how important Junior to Oscar is.Junior is completely alone and there i really nobody who understands him.It becomes clear, that junior feels really aggressive by the thought of his dad. Another stylistic device is on page  21 in line 5 , ,,I was hot mad.Volcano mad.tsunami mad.´´, by using this climax the reader can see how aggressive, sad and lonely junior is. Nobody understands him and he only feels aggressive and disappointed by the thought what his parents are able to do with his dog oscar. The other alliteration is on page 21,too ,,I wanted to hate him for weakness.I wanted to hate Dad and Mom for our poverty.I wanted to blame them for my sick dog and for all the other sickness in the world.´´ll.8. By using this alliteration , the reader becomes part of Junior´s feelings about his parents and how much he hates the poorness.

In conclusion it can be said that Junior really feels sad.He feels lonely and he feels like nobody understands him.The lost of Oscar makes him feel lonelier than everything. Junior has nobody.

Summary

In “Why Chicken Means So Much To Me” by Sherman Alexie the author talks about his poverty stricken past. Sherman mentions that people may think that the worst thing about being poor is hunger, but with his experience he tells the reader that the worst thing about being poor is not hunger. You could say Shermans dog Oscar was truly a mans best friend. Oscar taught Sherman more than any teacher ever did. Oscar got really sick to where every day the poor dog was in unbearable pain. With that being said Sherman explains that the worst thing about being poor is that his family did not have enough money to pay for Oscars treatment. As much as Sherman didn’t want his dog to die, he had to let his father do the humane thing and kill his best friend to end the suffering.

Critical Response

There is a lot of people in the world that are fortuneless and with the rise in cancer and other illnesses most of the unfortunate do not have the money to pay for expensive medical treatment. Most people including myself would think that the most difficult part of being poor is that you sometimes would go days without eating. Sherman opened my eyes and explained why his dog/bestfriend Oscar had to be put down to end his suffering. Oscar most likely could have prolonged his life if the Alexie family had the wealth to pay the veterinarian a visit. If I was in that situation I do not know how I would deal with it. My family was given a Siberian Husky as a gift about a year and a half ago and I consider him my brother. If I was not fortunate enough to pay for medical treatment I think it would be so hard to have to put him down.

Drawing, Writing, and Junior’s Cartoons

Poverty is nothing new in the eyes of the United States. The homeless ravish the streets of New York City in simple cardboard homes, the trailer park down the street from me in Birmingham, Alabama is filled with people struggling to make ends meet, and multitudes of Americans flood the sides of streets begging for an extra dollar or a scrap of something to eat. We see it everyday, and we wonder why these people do not just get up and get a job. We wonder why the homeless do not get up and find a spot in a homeless shelter. We wonder all these things without considering how the poverty truly and deeply affects a person’s life. Sherman Alexie addresses this affect on his on life in his article, “Why Chicken Means So Much to Me”, as he briefly describes how growing up as a poor Native American raised on the Spokane Indian Reservation allows him to be…show more content…
Alexie points out that “poverty only teaches you to be poor” (553). In this statement he logically concludes that his family has not been able to advance because all they know is the poverty they live in. In contrast, Alexie, once again, only considers his viewpoint. Although his statement is the case for his situation, it does not address situations where people have risen out of poverty, whether it is himself or other people within the reservation. His situation is not the same situation for all. Another example of this appears when he writes, “Poverty doesn’t give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance” (553). He again leaves out the masses. Alexie argues that his parents “never got the chance to be anything because nobody paid attention to their dreams” (551). The argument that being poor makes you a nobody is not well developed because Alexie’s only source is his own family. Other people in the reservation are not in the same situation, and can have the potential and mindset to come out of their
