The new 2022 Ram 2500 heavy-duty pick-up has arrived in Australia. Joining the DT-series Ram 1500 introduced earlier this year, and preceding the higher-payload Ram 3500 due between October and December 2021, the new-generation 2500 is now on sale in Ram showrooms across Australia, priced from $157,950 before on-road costs – with the RamBox storage system available for an additional $4950. As per all Ram Australia models, the 2500 is converted from left- to right-hand drive at the brand's facility in Victoria, with "over" 400 locally-produced parts involved in the "remanufacturing" process. Powering the Ram 2500 Laramie (the only variant on sale in Australia) is a 6.7-litre turbocharged inline-six diesel engine designed by Cummins, developing 276kW (at 2800rpm) and 1152Nm (from 1700rpm). Drive is sent to the ground through a "significantly upgraded" six-speed automatic transmission and an electronic transfer case offering 2WD (two-wheel drive), 4WD High, Neutral and 4WD Low modes. The maximum braked towing capacity is rated at 4500kg with a 70mm ball, or 3500kg with a 50mm ball, or up to 8000kg with a gooseneck tow hitch and air brakes. Gross vehicle mass sits at 4495kg, kerb weight comes in at 3660kg (or 3724kg with RamBox), while payload is claimed at 835kg (or 754kg with RamBox). By comparison the smaller 2021 Ram 1500 DT lists the same 3500kg and 4500kg towing capacities with 50mm ad 70mm tow balls respectively, and surprisingly similar payloads, at 833kg, or 779kg with RamBox for the 1500 Laramie, or a lower 701kg for the 1500 Limited. GVM is listed at 3450kg for the 1500, and kerb weight between 2617kg and 2749kg depending on variant and configuration. Ram also highlights a 64kg weight saving over the outgoing 2500, a drag coefficient of 0.409 (versus the smaller 1500 DT's 0.357), and five-link coil-spring rear suspension, enabling "industry-leading payload and towing capabilities". Standard equipment includes a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen with split-screen Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation support, a 7.0-inch digital driver display, leather seats with front outboard heating and ventilation, LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, and a wide active safety suite including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera.
