80/20 bronze vs phosphor bronze reddit

Oh man, I struggle with this every time I change my strings. I like the brightness of the 80/20s but once they dull I prefer the consistency of the phosphors.. So for me it kind of depends on how often I am changing strings. I tend to roll with 80/20 because I play other types of music too, and I like having a really bright treble.

But remember, a lot of classic acoustic blues sounds came from old beat up guitars with strings that weren't changed that often. I'd bet most of em were just playing your standard black diamond brand cheapo strings.

On my guitars 80/20 tend to be brighter and twangy. PB tend to be richer but a little more dull.

For my Seagull S6 (shorter scale, cedar top) a heavier 80/20 brought the bass notes out better.

On my Yamaha A3 (longer scale, spruce top) 80/20 sound harsh and lack body. PB have a deep, rich tone.

For an acoustic guitar, I was wondering what are the trade offs between different types of elixir strings? From my understanding, these are the differences that i have heard. Please correct me or add to them. Thanks

Nanoweb vs Polyweb:

Nano is thinner coating and brighter sound (better for higher notes?)

Poly is thicker and warmer sound (better for low and midrange?)

Phosphor bronze vs 80/20:

phosphor bronze is warmer (mid/low notes)

80/20 is brighter (high notes)

String gauge:

Lighter strings are easier to play.

Heavier strings have a thicker sound.

Light strings better for more fingerpicking, and heavy strings better for more strumming?

Also, what are some good strings to buy? I play about 5 hours a week, and do strumming about 75% of the time and finger picking for the rest. Thanks

I recently got a Cort Gold O6 and I like it very much. It is used, the setup is not perfect and the strings sound dull. I want to change them but I don't know if the brighter 80/20 or the warmer Phosphor Bronze would sound better. In general I like bright sounds and I play softly (no hard strumming) but the O6 already has a nice direct sound.

The title says it all.
What's the difference in the tone between 80/20 vs phosphor bronze? I did a search, but didn't find a thread on this.
Thanks

I don't really remember a specific sound of phosphor bronze, but I remember when I switched, I like 80/20s significantly more.

It depends on the guitar too

OK, I'll respond and you will get opposing/contrasting opions...IMO, it all kind of starts with what you go for in a guitar tone, and the relationship between the particular/individual guitar and string- you just can't generalize (I play a mahogany/spruce Martin, solid woods)

My experience (many years playing, 100% subjective) :

I find 80/20 or Bright Bronze strings to be very bright/zingy/metallic in tone, where I think you hear the tone of the string over the tone of the guitar. They have a very precise articulate tone, I find it to be too brash or clinical, not warm. It could be just my style (I play all kinds of music, all over the neck), but my experience with any 80/20 string has been that they go from overly bright to dead in just hours. I don't like them, and with the exception of D'Angelico Bright Bronze (Neil Young's fave string, and I love his tone), I don't use them.

I find phosphor bronze strings (I love GHS and D'Addario lights) to just be more agreeable to my style and my guitar (which has a dry/midrange tone that I like). PB strings, IMO ride the line between warm and bright (I like the tone of PB strings broken-in after an hour or two), and last (my experience) a very long time, hold their tuning and tone. My guitar sounds old and woody with them, forceful but not zingy. I like the brands I cited as I love their particular tone as well as their 'give' on the fingerboard when in comes to chording/fretting/bending. Identically gauged strings still vary in tension, and GHS and D'Adds just feel right for me. Go figure, I love Martin guitars, but hate their strings, hard to play-stiff.

Once again just one persons 2-cents!

PB tend to come across a little less bright. 80/20 less mellow.

To my ear, PB sounds more like the notes blend into chords a little better as compared to 80/20's retain note definition.

The difference is subtle and string gauge, pick material and thickness might more affect on tone.

My Taylor's came with 80/20's, but I noticed that new Taylor's are now shipping with phosphor bronze.

I guess the best thing is for me to try them.

Your posts did help answer some questions and I think I may like them better.

Thanks

I do prefer the Elixirs. I liked the Martins on my Bourgeois, but they didn't last.

I agree with most here...80/20 is brighter and metallic in it's tone. Phosphor bronze is warmer and softer in tone. I like both and often switch back and forth every few string changes for a refreshing change of pace. But to be honest, I think most guitars sound best with one or the other and 80/20 is my "go to" string type. Definitely buy a set of each in your preferred brand and gauge and do a test for yourself. Do it over time too, because I have found that as my guitar aged, it started to sound better with PB then when it was newer. Strange but true....

It 's been a while since I have tried a set of 80/20.I have a set that I will try out.

Using a coated string (Elixer, EXP, etc) would negate any warmth in tone from a PB in my opinion.
Elixers on a Taylor are so bright bordering in shrill. True that it makes the tone cut through in a mix, but it makes the guitar body do all the work for the low end where a nice mellow PB I coated string could add more to the full spectrum of the so if equation.
I will repeat the pick choice is at least as big a factor if not more, as well as action, string age, pick position, etc.

I agree with the comments. I played 80/20s for years, then I started playing PB when I got a Gibson, and I have never looked back. Well, once I did, and found I hated the 80/20s. The PB just sounds 'right' to my ears on my guitars, more harmonic content, rich, warm, woody, etc. With some guitars I imagine the 80/20s might be better suited. The 80/20s seem to have more highs, but maybe also have more bass.

You just have to try a set of each to make your determination. By "try" I mean put on one set, play for 30 minutes, then restring with the other set and play for 30 minutes. The difference should be quite apparent.

I tried 80/20s for the first time on two guitars (one rosewood, one mahogany), and they were just too bright for my tastes, even after breaking in. If you have a 'dark' sounding guitar that you'd like to brighten the tone a bit, 80/20s are the ticket. But IMO, they don't work well on already bright/trebly guitars. PBs are much more balanced to my ears, and I doubt I'll ever use anything else.

Check out D'Addario's comparison tool: http://www.daddario.com/DADProductsAcoustic.Page?ActiveID=1904

I generally agree that 80/20s are brighter than PBs, though for the first day or so, PBs can be a bit "clangy" sounding. 80/20s, when they start to die, can become very muted and mellow sounding, which actually isn't a bad sound. As always, ymmv but that's what I've found.

Thank you for this thread, as I am another person unsure of the generalized differences between the two. If I had purchased strings yesterday, I may have bought the 80/20's. After reading about the descriptions, a zingy/clangy sounding string is probably something I would rather shy away from. That said, since I don't have much experience with acoustic strings, I may still purchase a set to do a first-hand comparison, to help educate myself on not only the string differences, but how they react on my particular guitar.

Try out a set of each type, (I'd go with light gauge, myself) and then listen!

I know that how someone actually plays really influences string tone and longevity. The singer in our country band plays very lightly, strictly a strummer (on a Blueridge/Martin copy) and only plays in the first or open position chords- He uses D'Addario phosphor bronze strings that still sound almost brand new after a month of weekly gigs, as they barely are being 'excited', stressed, or whatever you wanna call it. Whereas I can play his guitar/same strings and after 2 gigs, his strings are let's just say 'mellow'.

Invest $10 and find out for yourself. Your style, attack, genre all have an influence on tone.

When I was a kid I read that 80/20s are brighter and do not last that long. PBs are warmer and last longer. This little bit of knowledge has worked for me for 36 years and there's no sense changing it now!
