Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has split screen. The consoles in question are PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Split screen works by adding multiple accounts to a single device. Horizontal split screen is available for Multiplayer mode, Zombies mode as well as the campaign. While the mode is limited to 2 players only while you play online, during local play that number can go up to 4 players so keep that in mind. 

When 2 players are playing in split screen, the screen will be split in half, either vertically, or horizontally. With three players, the screen is divided into one half and 2 quarters. Two players get a single quarter of a screen while a single player gets half a screen. While 4 players are in split-screen, the screen gets divided into quarters equally. 

During play, both players can level up, but the current level gets saved for the main player only. The guest player always starts with the level of the current main player.

Yes, split screen co-op play is available during local play. During setup, you have the option to shift between online play and local multiplayer play. If you plan on playing campaign mode offline it’s important to remember that your character will level up separately from your multiplayer online character. 

While you play offline, regular enemies will be replaced with AI bots. Which makes the game a bit easier.

How do I enable split screen in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3?

The way in which you enable split-screen in Black Ops 3 is different based on which console you’re playing on. In the rest of this guide, we’re going to cover both Xbox One split-screen setup and PlayStation 4.

How to enable split screen in Black Ops 3 on Xbox One? 

To enable split-screen in Black Ops 3 on Xbox One follow these steps: 

1. In order to set up the split-screen on Xbox One, you will have to navigate to your Home menu first to access the “sign-in” options
2. Once there select the “add new profile” option, this is needed for the other account to work 
3. Add the second Xbox Live profile that belongs to the other player
4. You’re going to have to sign into your own profile again, this is normal it won’t remove the other newly added profile from your selection 
5. Once you’re done with the accounts set up launch the game 
6. While in the game menu connect the second controller 
7. Press “A” on the controller to connect the other player online 
8. Press “A” again and the split screen will show up 
9. Once the second screen shows up “select profile” prompt will appear, select the newly added profile. 

This is pretty much it, from there, choosing different game modes is the same as while you’re playing regularly. 

How to enable split screen in Black Ops 3 on PlayStation 4? 

To enable split-screen in Black Ops3 on PlayStation 4 follow these steps: 

1. connect a second controller 
2. navigate to the main menu and press x 
3. Once the second player is connected you can choose between online split-screen and offline split-screen, you can shuffle between the three game modes as well: multiplayer, zombies, and campaign

as you can see setting up a split screen in Black Ops 3 is much simpler on PlayStation 4 than it is on Xbox One. 

What are the downsides of playing in split screen mode? 

The main disadvantage of split-screen mode is the size of the screen. Everything appears smaller and hence aiming is more difficult, especially when you’re dealing with long-distance targets during sniping. Flanking is a huge problem as well since it’s difficult to estimate where the fire is coming from when the screen is split between several players.

The more players are in split-screen the harder it is to concentrate on the details and the level of your spatial awareness decreases significantly. The other common disadvantage is a result of both players looking at the same screen which makes playing against each other a bit pointless.

And that’s pretty much it. As you can see split screen is available in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and it’s relatively easy to set up (at least on PlayStation 4). While playing in split screen you have the option to add up to 4 players depending on the game.

Ranking up is available in split screen but it works differently than in normal online multiplayer mode. Split screen is likewise available in offline mode, but regular enemies will be replaced with bots. Keep in mind that Four player split screen mode is reserved for local (offline) play only and will not be available during regular online matches.
