Bmw x1 vs mazda cx-5 reddit

Location: SW Washington/Portland, Ore Area

Max Price: $36,000

I'm looking for a new car and was checking out the Mazda Grand Touring with the GT Package. I've heard that it is a fantastic car and I've pretty much been sold on it. I've historically have driven older Volvo models but the new models are just out of my price range for now. I was doing some more research and found that the base model for the BMW runs around 36,000. Ultimately, I want a car that has good luxury features, comfortable to drive longer distances, and can handle well in the rain and snow.

How does the loaded Mazda compare to the base BMW in drive performance, reliability and quality?

Hey so I am looking into buying either a 14'/15' BMW X1 xDive 28i or a 2014 - 2016 Mazda CX 5 touring/gran touring AWD. Assume that both have about 80k to 110k miles on them. Looking for a hatchback/compact SUV that is dependable, has AWD and some power on the highway.

Have test driven both and loved the BMW but coming from a 2010 mazda 3 i am not sure what to expect from a BMW in terms of dependability/repair costs. I heard that up until 2016 the x1 was based on the E84 platform which had been in use for awhile so they have most of the kinks worked out.

Would love some feedback from anyone who put some serious miles (170+) on either.

“The other one has brand name.”- yeah that’s not a good way to shop for a car. The BMW may not even have the features you want while the cheaper Mazda will have them available for less. The Mazda also drives much better and honestly has a much more exciting exterior. The X1 is not good and is just for people who want to show they have “clout,” and BMWs are expensive to maintain because their maintenance is expensive. Trust me, the Mazda will be the better car. Don’t buy cars because of the brand EVER.

Hey all. I have a 2018 CX-5 GT and I love the car (except for the small screen and old Mazda UI).

When my lease was up I was considering either an X1 or XC40.

I’ve really been torn if I want to go with another CX-5, try a CX-30 (the black trim on the lower part of the car kills its for me though), or if I wanna swap up to a BMW/Volvo.

I doubt we’ll see the next generation of CX-5 before next August when my lease ends, nor the updated head unit, but I’m a bit surprised how many people would take the CX-5 over the x1 or XC40. I mean I love my CX-5 and the quality is great, but I figured the latter would be in a different league. What do you think makes the Mazda the better choice?

Which would you choose and why?

Wanting to move forward before the end of the month but my partner and I are in a paradox of choice. They all check our boxes. Awd, reasonable fuel economy, good size (dogs and work in real estate). The bmw and Volvo are more than the Mazda of course, but we’re leasing and the difference isn’t huge. On paper, the BMW and Volvo are better value in terms of the monthly payment to msrp %.

Loveee the Volvo interior. Only cons are slightly larger than we may need, and tied up cash with security deposits (renovating our house). Only a 30 month lease which is great and pull ahead is appealing.

The bmw is great other than the insurance rate being higher. I hate paying for nothing which is what the insurance premium feels like. Would like to have loyalty going forward but probably silly to consider this as it isn’t a big difference rather than conquest. May have slightly less safety features.

Like the mazda all around but we do prefer the added luxury of the other cars. It’s undeniably good but it’s high value for the msrp, whereas the others lease better for their price because I can get them far under msrp.

X1 would be a 2019 loaner. Volvo and Mazda would be new. Found good deals on leasehackr as well as shopping around. (2020 xc60 t5, Mazda cx 5 touring with preferred package)

Thanks!!!

I was looking at the X1 before choosing a CX5, mainly because of the size difference, and the difference seems way more than I had originally thought

level 2

Correct, the cx5’s cabin and cargo space was the main deciding factor to my swap. I was even looking at a used X3, but for the price of a used x3 I was able to get a brand new cx5 with all the bells and whistles..(and cargo room is still slightly bigger).

I traded my Acura for the CX-5 and much happier, nicer has more gadgets, drives nicer and to me it looks better too, also much cheaper to keep.

How was the BMW's reliability?

level 2

It was good! No real issues. Oil changes every 13,000km/1 year depends which one comes first. Although, I’ve experienced a couple of flats (misfortune) with it and had to replace the run flats..other than that I didn’t have any issues with it. It’s the x1 is premium package enhanced and it still doesn’t come close to the options/features of the cx5. The only thing that it has over the cx5 is the panoramic roof and tilting mirrors when you put it in reverse.

Wrap the nose of that car in protection film. Mazda paint is weak AF. Congrats on the new car!

Just booked that earlier today + tint for the 2 front windows. I was lurking this subreddit for a few weeks before I went with the cx5, so I already had the mats and trunk liner ready upon delivery date of the car haha!

I cant still choose between those 2. Is the cx5 that much bigger?

level 2

It is much more roomier and rides a little higher. I was initially in the market for the X3. I ended up test driving X3/glc 300/xc60/qx60/rav4/rdx/rogue/nx300, and I ended up going with the cx5. It competes with the luxury brands when it comes to driving experience/features/styling, you can’t beat it for value for your money as well. The only thing I wish that Mazda would improve is the infotainment system/nav graphics and a cabin lights/buttons could use an upgrade, but that’s just me being very picky.

Welcome to reliable fun transportation! I made the switch last year from germab vehicles.

How was the 8 speed transmission? Do you think the cx5 should be an 8 speed as well?

level 2

I had the 8 speed on a 320d before switching to a Cx-5 auto diesel, and while the bmw shift was smoother I didn’t miss it or I feel that the Mazda was lacking. Have recently switched to a newer Cx-5 auto petrol sport and find that it really likes to keep the revs up when accelerating, even gently. I know you expect more revs with petrol vs diesel, but it’s to the point it sounds like I’m deliberately keeping the revs high.

level 2

Tbh I haven’t noticed any drastic difference, I drive mainly in the city so mostly stop and go traffic. I’ve taken it out on the highway a couple of times already and once I get to the speed flow of the highway I usually just set it on cruise control. I’ve probably under utilized the X1s 8spd tbh. It’s a quick little car if I want to push it, but again that doesn’t happen often enough for me to miss it. I have a motorcycle to rip around in.

How was the 8 speed transmission? Do you feel like the cx5 is missing that?
