Road 96 is a road trip simulator that takes you across the fictional country of Petria, an authoritarian nation. There are multiple endings, and which one you get depends on your actions. You play as one of many teenagers eager to hit the road and escape this land. Your best bet is taking Road 96, but this will be a long, challenging journey that you may not survive. Along your many attempts to reach the border beyond the mountains, you meet various fascinating characters, make tough choices, and influence the world around you in multiple ways.

Although lots of details can change, such as the fates of certain characters, there are only three main endings that you can experience: the Revolution ending, the Election ending, and the Escape ending. Some aspects will be similar throughout all three endings, but the final fate of Petria changes depending on which ending you achieve.

3/3 The Escape Ending

All three main endings of Road 96 begin the same way. You will be captured and taken into a holding cell near the border. So close to election day, tensions are starting to rise and rise. By the time you're set to be taken to the infamous Iron Pits, riots have begun to break out near the wall. Protestors will topple over the car you're transported in, and you can escape. Meeting John, you'll head off to help him find Alex. From there, specific details will alter depending on how things have panned out for you during your journey.

The Escape is the bleakest ending in this story-driven game. During the riots, you will be given a choice to stay and fight or try to escape. If you choose to flee, you'll be abandoning everyone else. Alex will head down to fight and get caught in the crossfire. The riots will continue for a brief time but will be ultimately snuffed out by the overbearing Tyrak regime.

Although your character escapes, this is ultimately the worst ending, as the fate of Petria goes from bad to worse. If you're aiming for the Escape ending, you will likely have additional bleak details added to this ending. For example, Alex will be the one who created a bomb, and Fanny will most likely shoot John. There are no positives to this ending, but if you want to see this ending for yourself, you need to make sure you are always focused on your own survival. Do this by avoiding getting involved in anything — do not pick a side. Just keep out of the way as much as possible.

2/3 The Revolution Ending

After your roguelike road trip adventure, the Revolution ending will play out similarly to the Escape ending, as you rush to find Alex and are confronted with an explosive to deal with. Fanny will once again encounter John and pull a gun on him. Your crucial decision in this ending is to stay and fight rather than choose to escape. By doing so, you will head down to join the rest of the protestors as you begin to overthrow Tyrak by force.

Although this route still offers hope, it's a bittersweet ending. Many will still die during the chaotic protests, most likely including Zoe. Tyrak is overthrown and replaced by Florres, but the Black Brigade still believes she is too moderate for the country. This hints that perhaps more trouble will rise eventually, but for now, there is hope and progress for Petria. This ending is a good choice for those that want a more chaotic aggressive finale, but the Election ending feels like a more suitable conclusion in comparison.

As with the other two endings, you must make certain choices to reach this conclusion. You must pick antagonistic options when talking to others during the different encounters you face. You need to encourage characters to be strong and rebellious; lead others into a violent revolution as much as possible; ensure you are always vandalizing Lupe Florres' election posters. This is a dangerous way to play the game, as it will often mean putting yourself at risk, but it's a reliable way to get this ending.

1/3 The Election Ending

The Election Ending provides a more hopeful outlook to conclude your road trip, especially in comparison to the Escape ending, where you flee from the consequences. After dealing with Alex, Fanny and John, you must once again choose to stay and fight rather than flee. In this ending, there will still be many deaths in the riots. Many sacrifices are made as the protests expand to most of Petria. Unlike the Revolution ending, a fair vote gives Florres a resounding victory over Tyrak. Not only that, but Tyrak is imprisoned for his crimes, and many of his policies are removed under Florres' leadership. The Iron Pits and the wall are dismantled, and it feels as if real change has been made to the country as a whole, thanks to your actions. This is the best ending you can achieve in the game.

If you're aiming for this slightly more peaceful ending, even with the initial riots, you will most likely see other key details have a positive spin to them. For example, Fanny will not shoot John, and instead, they will come together. Alex will also not have been radicalized and instead be trying to deactivate a bomb rather than be the one that placed it there in the first place.

To achieve this ending, you must always pick dialogue options that will lead to peaceful solutions to your encounters. Unlike the Revolution path, you need to encourage people to vote and be more democratic. You must inspire them to know their vote can change things in Petria. Alongside dialogue, if you vandalize Tyrak's election posters instead of Florres' posters, you will continue to sway things towards an Election ending.
