Can you still trade in Pokémon SoulSilver?

This page explains how to trade from Pokémon SoulSilver to Pokémon HeartGold.

What You Need

Each player needs a Nintendo system that can play Nintendo DS games.

In-Game Requirements

Before you can trade from Pokémon SoulSilver to Pokémon HeartGold, you need to get the Pokédex from Professor Oak at Mr. Pokémon's house, and you need to have at least two pokémon in your party.

How to Trade

Make sure that both players are using Nintendo DSes or 3DSes and are nearby. (Internet trades are no longer possible for Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum, Pokémon HeartGold, or Pokémon SoulSilver.)

Go to a Pokémon Center and go upstairs. Talk to the person in the middle, then say Yes when asked if you want to enter the room. Say Yes again to start DS Wireless Communication. Then say Yes to save the game, and say Yes when asked if it is OK to overwrite the previous save.

In the room, talk to the player that you want to trade with. When the menu appears, choose Trade.

Now select the pokémon that you want to trade, and choose TRADE when prompted. You will see the pokémon that the other player wants to trade. Choose YES to start the trade.

Getting this and silver with a roommate. I know the online is down but they should still be able to connect, right?

As of May 20 (depending on what time they actually pull the plug), you won't be able to use online connectivity (like GTS and finding registered friends online), but you will still be able to use local connectivity, so if you and your roommate are within a short distance of each other, you'll be able to battle, trade, or whatever.

Me and my two roommates did the same thing (Reset our HG/SS's) and we can still trade and battle via local connection. I have yet to try the other means of trading however.

Nintendo is permanently taking down their Wifi Servers for DS/DSi and Wii on May 20th (I may not have the date right)

Thier focus is now strictly on 3DS and WiiU

It's a bit of a shame that ALL of the old Nintendo servers are going down, since I can understand it for some games where online isn't such a big thing (like Zelda Phantom Hourglass), but for Pokemon it's a very important part of it. Also, consider how (relatively) new B2/W2 are and it really wasn't expected.

But the reason for it is that Nintendo didn't use their own servers, but rather used an external service from GameSpy. GameSpy was bought up by some other company several years ago, and they then found out that the servers weren't exactly moneymakers... seems like some companies who hired space haven't paid in years. So even if Nintendo isn't one of them, the whole service is now shutting down. Some companies are saving the situation (Rockstar with GTAIV and RDR) by releasing patches and getting other servers, while others (like Nintendo) just drops it all. I don't know why they didn't choose to save a few games which are at huge losses due to lack of online.

Now that I think about it maybe it's just a well? All anybody ever wanted in trade were ridiculous pokemon anyway. You know, like a level 100 shiny whatever with an equally ridiculous moveset.

Can I trade pokémon from SoulSilver to platinum?

There are no trade restrictions between gen 4 games. I have traded from HG and SS to Platinum. You would need 2 DS consoles and then just head to the Union Room, found in the Pokemon Centre, on both games and trade from there. You will need 2 Pokemon in your party to be able to trade.
