Dragon age origins sloth demon crash

I imagine this sub hates questions like this, but I'm desperate.

I'm on my first playthrough of DA:O on PC and about 18 hours in I'm at a loss... the Sloth Demon crashes the game right at the moment when I kill the sloth demon. Yes I've googled it, but I haven't found anything that is relevant to me.

I bought my game on GOG, not sure that makes a big difference.

Why does Dragon Age Origins keep crashing?

One of the most common reasons why Dragon Age: Origin will crash on your system is incompatibility. Your system should not be superior or inferior to what the game requires. There are some workarounds we have mentioned, such as degrading the DirectX version or using the Compatibility mode.
