Emergency Dentistry FAQ

What is a dental emergency?

  • Dental problems that need immediate attention and treatment which can include:

    • Alleviate severe pain, infections, stop bleeding, saving a tooth.

Can I be seen for a dental emergency same-day or after-hours?

  • Yes, please call us and we will do our best to help you as soon as possible.

What should I do if my tooth is completely missing or askew?

  • Try putting your tooth back into the socket, and use a soft material, such as wet gauze so that you’re not biting down on another tooth.

  • Keep it in your mouth until you can get to the Brightwork office.

  • If you can’t get the tooth back into the socket or if it’s completely missing, rinse the tooth and drop it into a glass of milk until Dr. Crowley or Dr. Iachini can see you.

  • Put a cold, damp compress against your gums to slow the bleeding.

What do I do if I’m experiencing pain after a dental procedure?

  • Although it doesn't happen often, dental procedures aren’t without risks. If you recently had a procedure and believe that something is seriously wrong, call the Brightwork office.

    • You’ll be advised on how to care for the tooth until you can get into his office.

  • Don’t ignore symptoms that may indicate an abscess or infection, and keep track of changes, such as swelling or bleeding, so you can accurately describe the events to your dentist.

What if I can’t get an immediate appointment?

  • Until you can be seen by our team of experts:

    • Minimize any pressure on your teeth.

    • Refrain from chewing hard foods and stay away from chewing ice.

    • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, if necessary.

    • Use an ice pack if you experience swelling.

  • If it’s after normal business hours, leave a message telling them your call is an emergency and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

  • If you’re in need of immediate dental care, call to schedule an appointment.

  • We are currently welcoming new patients and accepts most major forms of insurance.

Have a question?

Can emergency dentist remove teeth?

If you need an emergency tooth extraction, your dentist will numb the area first so that you don't continue to feel any pain. They'll then take the tooth out.

How do you pull a tooth in an emergency?

Gently insert the elevator perpendicular to the tooth into the space between the tooth to be removed and the adjacent tooth. The elevator should be resting on the crest of the bone between the teeth. The elevator has 2 surfaces; the concave surface is the working side and should face the tooth being removed.

Can I go to A and E for tooth extraction?

The Local Hospital A&E will typically not conduct an Emergency Tooth Extraction or place any permanent Dental Fillings. They will only put in temporary fillings if it is as a result of Trauma, not due to Tooth Decay and for most minor cases the Dental Patient will be turned away with Painkillers.

Can you get a tooth pulled at the ER Ontario?

Yes. If you need emergency dental care and go to the Emergency Room (ER), the ER will treat you and then bill your health insurance. The ER is not likely to be able to treat a dental problem unless it is a health emergency. They may also use temporary measures to relieve pain until you are able to see a dentist.
