Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Nicole Maguire, DO, FACEP
Program Director

Dr. Maguire is the Program Director for Emergency Medicine at Community Medical Center where she is excited to welcome her first class of 12 residents in 2021. She has served as the Osteopathic Program Director of Emergency Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 2009-2019 and as the Associate Program Director from 2015 - 2020. She has also held the position of Emergency Medicine Clerkship Director at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 2007-2020. She continues to work clinically as an attending physician at Community Medical Center.

Dr. Maguire graduated Cum Laude from Boston College and attended New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a dually accredited residency in Emergency Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She is board certified in Emergency Medicine by both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. She is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Medicine and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and St. George’s University.

Dr. Maguire’s areas of interest and research include academics, resuscitative medicine, international medicine and clinical ethics. She was the physician leader at Newark Beth Israel for Moderate Therapeutic Hypothermia from 2011-2020 and has lectured in many settings on the topic. She was also the Vice-Chair of the Bio-Ethics Committee at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 2018-2020. She currently resides in New Jersey with her husband, daughter and twin sons. She is an avid US Master’s swimmer and enjoys running, yoga, biking and time with family and friends.

Eric Stander, MD
Interim Chair, Core Faculty
Dr. Stander completed his medical school training at UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine and went on to residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. While there, he was awarded resident of the year during his PGY-2 from the community affiliate, Methodist Hospital, and served as chief resident during his PGY-3. Following graduation, he worked at Methodist Hospital, and served as the Assistant Medical Director for 3 years. Dr. Stander then worked at Ocean Medical Center followed by Nazareth Hospital, where he served as the Medical Director at both locations. After leaving Nazareth Hospital, Dr. Stander spent 12 years as Clinical Service Chief of Emergency Medicine at Hahnemann University Hospital, a level 1 trauma center and tertiary care teaching hospital for Drexel University College of Medicine. While there, he obtained the rank of Clinical Professor, served on several national committees and regional committees, and was deeply involved in teaching residents and students. Over his long career, he has been involved in many hospital and regional committees, was medical director for an Air Ambulance Medivac, helped design and implement new emergency departments, installed electronic medical record systems, was involved in developing state legislature for ED operations, and most importantly helped mentor and train many upcoming physicians. His academic interests involve clinical operations and system design to better improve ED efficiency. He also truly enjoys clinical teaching and is looking forward to many more years of mentoring young minds.

Lisa Armstrong, MD, FACEP
Medical Student Clerkship Director
Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Dr. Lisa Armstrong graduated from Rutgers- NJ Medical School. She received her training in Emergency Medicine at Morristown Medical Center, where she also was Chief Resident. She also completed her fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Morristown Medical Center. Afterwards, she remained there for 7 years, teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, along with being a member of the resident review council. She left Morristown to go to Capital Health Systems, where she was the Pediatric Emergency Department Director, and Assistant Emergency Department Director. She is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and has been in practice for over 10 years. She greatly enjoys teaching and working with medical students and residents.

Danielle Biggs, MD
Associate Program Director
Director of Emergency Ultrasound

Dr. Biggs received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. She completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ, where she was voted “Rookie of the Year” as an intern and later became Chief Resident. After residency, she stayed at Morristown where she completed an Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship, the ACEP Teaching Fellowship, and was a part of the core faculty. She was voted “Most Valuable Contributor” to the residency program at MMC for the 2019-2020 academic year. Dr. Biggs also successfully implemented ultrasound education programs for physicians and APPs at community sites within the Atlantic Health System. She is passionate about residency education, ultrasound, and wellness. In her free time, she loves spending time with her family, especially her 1-year old daughter.

Christopher DelMaestro, DO
Core Faculty

Dr. DelMaestro is New Jersey born and raised. He attended college at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey before attending medical school in Tennessee at Lincoln Memorial University – DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. He returned to the tri-state area for his residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. DelMaestro’s medical interests include medical education, evidence-based medicine, and ultrasound. When he's not in the hospital, he enjoys hanging out at the beach, attending any sporting event, traveling, and spending time with his friends, family, and his dog Major.

Emerson Franke, MD
Core Faculty

Dr. Franke is originally from Connecticut graduating from Quinnipiac University before becoming a proud alumni of Ross University School of Medicine. He completed residency at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center where he was part of their second ever graduating class and a chief resident. He recently completed an EMS, Disaster, and Tactical Medicine fellowship at Newark Beth Israel in Newark, NJ. He has traveled throughout the country and slowly trying to travel throughout the world. He has a passion for all parts of emergency medicine, including healthy policy, alternative payment models, disaster management and mass casualty preparedness , community paramedicine, resident education, mentorship and palliative care. An active member of ACEP, AAEM, NAEMSP serving on multiple committees to improve healthcare in any facet we can.

Joslyn F. Joseph, DO
Medical Student Clerkship Director
EMS Director

Dr. Joseph graduated Cum Laude from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, NY where she received the Platinum TOUCH Award for Community Service. She is ABEM dual-board certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. She completed her Emergency Medicine training at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ and went on to complete EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ. She is the Founder and President of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of EMS Physicians and has served as Clerkship Director of the New Jersey EMS Fellowship. Her interests include education, pre-hospital research, and critical care resuscitation.

Gregory Neyman, MD
Research Director, Core Faculty

Dr. Neyman graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University / Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine in St John's Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, MI. He completed a fellowship in Research in Christiana Care Hospital in Newark, DE. He was Research Director and Core Faculty at St Michael's Hospital in Newark, NJ, and has also worked in the New Jersey community.

Andrew C. Parrish, MD
EMS Director, Core Faculty

Dr. Parrish is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and EMS & Disaster Medicine. He is originally from Orlando, Florida and graduated from the University of Central Florida while working on a 911 ALS unit during college. After completing medical school at St. George's University, he completed residency at Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ and a fellowship in EMS, Disaster and Tactical medicine at Rutgers/RWJBH Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ. He currently is EMS Medical Director of Community Medical Center and a core member of the NJ state-wide EMS Physician response program with the MD1 Program and a Tactical Physician with the NJ State Police T.E.A.M.S. (SWAT) unit as well as various other federal response teams. He loves actively making a difference on the front lines of medicine.

Joseph Roarty, MD
Core Faculty

Dr. Roarty received his Medical Degree from New York Medical College in 2005. He completed residency at San Antonio Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, Texas. He is Board Certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine. After completing residency he fulfilled his active duty service obligation serving as a Brigade Surgeon in Fort Stewart, GA. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn from 2010-2011 earning a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service during his deployment. He served as chief of the department of emergency medicine at Winn Army Community Hospital before finishing his military career in 2012. He practiced Emergency Medicine in the Savannah, GA area for six years before returning home to NJ in 2018. He currently holds staff appointments in the departments of Emergency Medicine at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ as well as Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. Dr. Roarty enjoys spending time with his wife and four children.

Amit Setya, DO
Associate Director, Core Faculty

Dr. Setya received his medical degree from UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine followed by residency training in Emergency Medicine at Newark Beth Israel. He was the research resident where he was involved in many research projects. He has been published in several scientific journals. As a practicing emergency physician, he was a member of the staffing support team where he worked in many different practice settings. In the last 10 years, he has been part of a chart review process to assess and enhance documentation and clinical care for various hospitals in New Jersey. For the last 5 years, he has been the Associate Director of the Emergency Department at Community Medical Center. His focus as the AD has been on ED operations, Quality Projects, and Didactics involving Advanced Practice Providers.​
