I have a Frigidaire Model - FRS26ZRG that is working fine on the freezer side for the past 24 hours, but the fridge side is not cooling. The unit is 7 years old. There is ice build-up on the back of the freezer. I can hear the fan in the freezer running, but it doesn't seem like the refrigerator ever kicks on. Does this sound like a compressor issue ?

Thank you Jeff. I took off the back panel and I can see that there is frost over all of the evaporator coils. I left the panel off and turned the freezer back on and air is now flowing to the fridge side again. This was much less painful than letting the whole fridge sit empty for 2 days to defrost From what I read, it looks like that narrows the problem down to : The
defrost timer The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch) The defrost heater Does that sound about right to you ? Still trying to figure out where they are hiding the defrost timer. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again. -Jason jeff1Appliance Tech - Moderator
From what I read, it looks like that narrows the problem down to : The defrost timer The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch) The defrost heater Yes. Too short.
Some are behind the kick panal on the bottom left at the front...some are beside the controls in the FF section. jeff.
Man, you are good. I found the real model # FRS26ZRGW8. I confirmed that the defrost timer is on the front left behind the kickplate on this model. It sure was hidden, it was about the last place I looked. I was able to put it into defrost mode and I see the glow of the heating element behind the evaporator coils. Looks like I need to replace the defrost timer.
Thanks for all of your help !! -Jason

Ok, one more question. I ordered a new defrost timer, but now it seems that the old timer is working correctly. The defrost is kicking on as it should and there is no frost build-up on the coils. Does this mean that there could be some other problem, or is it just that the defrost timer will eventually get stuck again, so I should replace it ? Thanks, Jason
Hi, I ended up replacing the defrost timer and everything was working fine for a couple weeks, but now the frost problem has happened again. This time, when I put the (new) defrost timer into defrost mode, the defrost did not come on. I used a hair dryer to defrost the coils and then when I tested the defrost timer again it worked. Does anyone have a recommendation ? Should I replace the thermostat ? Thanks in advance. -Jason Cause 1 The Evaporator Coils are Frosted Over The defrost heater assembly turns on a few times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater assembly is defective, frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils, and the coils will become plugged with frost. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, the airflow through the coils will be restricted, causing the refrigerator not to cool. Check the evaporator coils to determine if they are frosted over. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, test each component of the defrost system. Cause 2 Evaporator Fan Motor The evaporator fan motor draws cold air over the evaporator coils and circulates it throughout the freezer. If the evaporator fan is not working, the freezer or refrigerator will not cool adequately. To determine if the evaporator fan motor is defective, try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, replace the fan motor. Additionally, if the motor is unusually noisy, replace it. Finally, if the motor does not run at all, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. If the windings do not have continuity, replace the evaporator fan motor.. Cause 3 Damper Control Assembly The air damper control opens and closes to let the proper amount of cold air into the refrigerator compartment. If the damper does not open properly, it won’t let enough cold air into the refrigerator. Check the damper control to determine if it is broken or stuck closed. Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator not staying cool?If your Frigidaire refrigerator still appears to be receiving power but isn't cooling properly or not cooling at all, the source of the problem can be a faulty evaporator fan motor, a broken compressor start relay, condenser fan motor, or malfunctioned main control board.
Why is my side by side refrigerator not cooling?Locate the vents in both the freezer and refrigerator compartments and ensure that there is nothing blocking the airflow. If vents are blocked, airflow will decrease. Temperature and moisture issues may arise due to blocked vents.
How do you fix a refrigerator that's not getting cold?Pull the unit away from the wall and unplug it. Check the owner's manual for any “off” or “zero” settings in your fridge and freezer and set them to off or zero. Plug the unit back in and adjust the temperature controls of both to your desired setting. Give the fridge about 24 hours to cool to your set temperature.
