Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales collects more than two hundred tales set down by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early decades of the nineteenth century, among them some of the best-loved and most famous fairy tales in all literature: "Little Red Riding Hood," "Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Rapunzel," "Rumpelstiltskin," and "Tom Thumb". Derived from folk tales that had been part of the oral storytelling tradition for centuries, these stories are acknowledged as literary landmarks that transcend their time and culture. This edition also features ten rarely seen "Children's Legends" and the full-colour artwork of Arthur Rackham. Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales is one of Barnes & Noble's Leatherbound classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and a silk-ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for every home library. 2.0 out of 5 stars So so... I love the cover but the pages are so thin you can read through them to the next page. Makes it harder to read. The pictures are ok. Reviews with imagesTop reviews from the United States
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2015 I think we are all well aware of what the stories are basically about. These are not Disney versions, of course. They don't necessarily live "happily ever after" and many of the stories are downright cruel and frightening. That said, I've been in search of the ultimate version of this book. As of the date of the writing of this review, I have not yet found that. Because I collected a number of popular Kindle versions (all of these reviews are based on Kindle versions), I thought I'd compare them here so you can choose which one best fits your needs. A few of things to know first. 1. I view illustrated books on my desktop, so when I talk about illustrations, imagine them being much larger than on a tablet. --- Grimm's Fairy Tales (Illustrated)This edition has an intro, biographies of the brothers and illustrations. It has 4 main issues that detract from its usefulness: 1. It contains only 62 of the original 211 stories which is unacceptable, at least for me. This one gets 3-stars at best. Its best feature is that it appears to not have many spelling or grammatical typos, which run rampant in Kindle editions. This could be a better book if they would simply reformat it and make an active TOC. Grimm's Fairy TalesThis edition has an ATOC but no other special features such as an intro, biographies nor any illustrations. It is simply bare bones prose. This version is similar to the one above in that it has single spaced paragraphs, but thankfully each paragraph has an indentation so it is easy to spot new paragraphs. I do like the text formatting better than the one above. It highlights rhymes very well. It's main downfall is that it too only contains 62 of the original 211 stories. This one also only gets 3-stars. There is no feature here that is all that worthy. You're missing most of the stories and you get no extras. Grimm's (Complete) Fairy Tales (Annotated)This edition has an ATOC, introduction and biographies of the brothers. It however does not have any illustrations, sadly. That would make it near perfect, except for the annotated thing, which I'll come back to. This edition is the most exhaustive of the three. It has 210 of the original 211 stories, which means if you want all the stories, this is the book for you. Most of its text formatting is better than the others as well. Paragraphs are double spaced, but the thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't highlight rhymes like the previous version. The one very serious problem I have with it is its claim of being annotated, when it very clearly is not. There's not a single annotation throughout the book. I'm not sure why they claim it to be so. Perhaps the print edition is annotated? In any case, I can say with the utmost authority that the Kindle edition is definitely not. What a disappointment! This one gets 4-stars simply because it does contain all of the stories. It looks like one story may be missing (I'm not going to go through all 211 to see which it is, but it could be that one was combined or a number was missed. Either way, it's the most complete version. --- All in all the one I find most useful (so far), even if it's lacking, is the so-called "annotated" version. If you're wanting illustrations, then I would get both that one and the first one. The second one is, in my opinion, the least useful. The truth is that at the time of this writing there is not yet a perfect edition in Kindle. Perhaps one day. If you find one (that is low priced) let me know in the comments and I'll take a look at it. Hopefully this helped you in your choice. If not, please let me know how I can improve it. Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2022 I didn't expect to get the book close to the original, which I have, but this version lacks just about any pictures or drawings. If you saw the original you would know this version lacks a lot of why people bought the original by the car loads many years ago. It is beautiful, and full of colorful drawings. I returned it. Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022 A good, mostly unsanitized Grimms, with the good, the evil, and the blood intact. These are teaching tales for and from a more violent and uncertain world. Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2022 I am reading Tales in this book with my 8 year old and we are enjoying both the texts and many black and white drawings. Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2021 This is a very nice book with great illustrations. My only complaint is that the print is a bit too small for me to read comfortably, even with new glasses. I'm keeping it for one of my granddaughters. Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2013 This Kindle edition is split into two parts: Part I contains all 210 of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's fairy tales; Part II has their ten children's legends, which involve religious figures. I could have gotten a free copy of Grimm's fairy tales, but it only had 25 entries. It was definitely worth it to upgrade to this version, especially since this e-book has an active table of contents. There are also some illustrations, but they are small and it is hard to make out any detail. I still have my old childhood book of Grimm's Fairy Tales, and one of the surprises in this e-book collection was the number of tales that involved religious figures, e.g. God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and the Twelve Apostles. These stories were left out of my original book, and it's easy to figure out why because Mary and Joseph really come down hard on disobedient little girls: "at last [the lizards and snakes] stung the wicked child to death, and they stung the mother in the foot, because she had not brought her up better." There are very few mistakes in the text barring an occasional free-floating mystery sentence and some doubling up of the first letter in a story. This book is a definite bargain. Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021 Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022 Top reviews from other countries4.0 out of 5 stars Chartwell Edition - no fancy gilt work Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 28, 2020 The Chartwell edition text is Margaret Hunt's translation of 1897. Probably the same translation used by many as it will be out of copyright. So the language is from 1897 - thee thou thine, and feels a little archaic today, but not difficult to read. The paper is smooth white matt, and fine (just as well for 600 pages of it). It is printed in a nice clear font, and easy to read. The illustrations are printed on the same paper in black and white. Some work better than others. Some seem a little blocked up, where others are quite light, and some are like paper cut silhouettes. i would have thought them by different artists but the only attribution is to Arthur Rackham. The dust jacket is matt green paper. The binding underneath is plain green cloth - don't expect any fancy covering or gilt work that might be described in some of the other reviews - they do not belong to the Chartwell edition. When I bought this it was about £8, remarkably cheap for a 600 page book of this quality. A good book, but I am looking for updated English, better illustration and better binding. (cant expect that for £8). If you just want to read the stories then I cannot fault this edition. 4.0 out of 5 stars Chartwell Edition - no fancy gilt work The Chartwell edition text is Margaret Hunt's translation of 1897. What I saw before me was pure beauty. The cover is a vivid red with gold writing giving it a somewhat old feeling to it and the illustration is amazing.I was already content. The only thing that surprised me was the thickness of the pages. They are quite thin , but that's not stopping me from grabbing it and reading it. As it just arrived today I haven't been able to read it , but I would recommend the book to anyone as it's in great quality and it's quite cheap. Also everyone should be introduced into the mesmerizing world of The Brothers Grimm's. Do not miss out ! 3.0 out of 5 stars Grimm! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 6, 2013 Some very odd tales. Decided to read some of these as it was one of those things that I knew so well by name, but couldn't say for sure what the book contained. Like many short story books, some will capture your attention, some won't. The Kindle book is free, so you have nothing to lose in grabbing a copy and flicking through a few stories until you find one of interest. Not something that you might want to read cover to cover, but at the same time there will be something that grabs you and pulls you in. If it doesn't, well it hasn't cost you anything to try, and at least you can say you had a go at reading it! If you are thinking it is like the TV show Grimm, it isn't. No USA cops in this book. 5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2021 Been wanting this for a very long time and finally bought it! It's everything I thought it would be and more. I saw a lot of reviews where they were not happy with there not being a gold trim and honestly I was a bit disappointed at first but it does not take away from the fact that this book is well worth the money. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! 4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, but looking forward the complete volume.
