How our PO Boxes work

You can get a PO Box for up to one year at a pro-rata rate until 31 March.

A PO Box costs $20 to set up, with annual charges depending on the PO Box size. Discounts apply for eligible customers.5

1 If your parcel is too large to fit in your PO Box, we’ll leave you a key so you can collect it from a PO Box red door. Parcel delivery via red doors is subject to size and availability restrictions. Parcels that can’t be delivered using a red door box will be given a card advising collection from your Post Office. Red door boxes are available at participating Post Offices. Fees and charges may apply to carriers other than Australia Post and StarTrack to deliver parcels to PO Box services. Carriers may pass this cost on to customers.

2 If your parcel is not collected within 30 days, your parcel may be returned to the sender. Speak to your Post Office if you are unable to collect items within 30 days.

3 Please check at your individual PO Box location, as access times can vary.

4 Free 6-month mail redirection for new leases from your street address to your new PO Box (not from one PO Box to another PO Box). Lodge your mail redirection application in-store when you collect your new PO Box keys.

5 Excludes persons residing on houseboats, water / sea vessels or on a private road such as a caravan park, gated community, retirement village or defence force barracks. Only available for customers where Australia Post doesn't deliver to their residential or business address, and each non-delivery address is eligible for one reduced rate PO Box or locked bag at the nearest Post Office. (Note: assessment may take up to seven days. Customers may be changed to full rate if delivery circumstances change).

6  PO Box Plus is available at participating Post Offices. Cannot be used for third party items requiring photo ID and/or personal signature of addressee, or for articles delivered outside of Post Office opening hours. Fees and charges may apply to carriers other than Australia Post and StarTrack to deliver parcels to PO Box services. Carriers may pass this cost on to customers. Size and weight limits apply. Limit of 50 third party articles per PO Box billing year. PO Box Plus service is for non-business use only. How long can you leave a package at a PO Box?

The boxholder has 10 days to pay past due fees and pickup held mail. After that ten days (ten days after the due date), the box is closed and your mail is returned as undeliverable. A PO Box may also be closed if the official box holder has: Falsified the application for the box.

How long will the post office keep my parcel?

You will be able to collect the parcel from the Post Office from the date/time left on the 'we called to deliver/collect your parcel' card. You can check for the opening times of the Post Office using our Post Office finder. The parcel will be held at the post office for up to 16 calendar days.

What happens to packages sent to a PO Box?

In most cases, as long as the package was sent to the P.O. box address via the US Postal Service, the package will remain on the premises of that post office for the recipient to pick up in person. Generally, a slip will be placed in the recipient's box indicating that the package is being held.

Does USPS put packages in PO Box?

USPS is the only postal service that ships to PO boxes, though FedEx SmartPost offers delivery service to PO boxes since USPS handles the final leg of delivery. So if you're looking to use UPS or other FedEx shipping services, you're out of luck.
