How long does hair need to be for sugaring

To sugar, or not to sugar? Let's start out by describing the differences between waxing and sugaring. Waxing uses a resin-based product to remove hair by the root and comes in either a soft or a hard form. Soft always requires a strip. It may already come attached to a strip or be applied with an applicator and then the strip is placed on top. Hard wax is always applied warm and is removed with the hands or fingers, no strip required.

With waxing, you generally need 1/4-of-an-inch of hair for the product to grab onto and successfully be removed. It depends on the kind of wax being used, the type of hair and how skilled the person is—but sometimes hair a bit shorter than 1/4-of-an-inch can be removed.

Sugaring

Real sugaring products are made of natural ingredients like sugar, water, and lemon juice, and is therefore a much less artificial product than many waxes. There are two types (paste and gel), and while made of the same recipe, they require two different hair lengths.

Gel

This is warmed up to the same consistency as soft wax. It’s also applied with the direction of hair growth, and removed against it, just like soft wax (this technique helps lessen the chance of ingrown hairs). It requires strips to zip off the product. So you still need about 1/4-of-an-inch of length for the sugar to grab onto.

Paste

This is the traditional technique that is much thicker and isn’t very warm (about room temperature). It requires more skill to use than the gel and because it's applied against the direction of hair growth and then removed in the direction that it grows with the hands. Using this method can remove hair as short as 1/16-of-an-inch.

In short, sugaring paste can remove much shorter hair than waxing can. As a plus, most people say sugaring is less painful and tends to cause less redness and irritation than waxing. And, since it isn't scalding hot, it won't cause the burns that some gels and waxes can. In terms of grow-back, however, sugaring and wax are generally on par with one another.

Issues Removing Hair

Even if you have the minimum amount of hair growth, you can still have some challenges removing the hair. For example, pre-made wax strips are notorious for leaving hair behind. Soft wax can also disappoint. If the skin isn't prepped correctly, or if the wax isn't warm enough or is applied too thickly, stragglers may remain. Hard wax also takes much more practice to get down, as it needs to be put on more thickly and should be allowed to cool before removing.

Sugaring may also not be as sweet of a hair removal process as you'd like. Not cooking the sugaring product together just right, the humidity, and removing the strip fast enough all play a role in getting silky smooth.

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring hair removal also known as Sugarwax, has been used for centuries.  With a skilled hand, a sugar paste is applied to the skin and molded right before flicking and removing unwanted hair. Sugar is 100% all natural, organic form of hair removal.

What are the terms that are used for Sugaring?

Sugaring is a form of hair removal that oftentimes is referred to as sugar wax, sugaring, sugar, or wax. People are confused by the term and often combine sugar + wax.  While sugar and wax do the same thing both are very different.

How does Sugaring work?

The type of sugaring I use is a room temperature paste that warms with body temperature.  A warm, thick mixture is applied first in the opposite direction of hair growth and then in the direction of hair growth using the hands. It’s then flicked off in the direction of hair growth.  The hair is extracted from the hair follicle.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my Sugaring session?

Yes!  For the best results, please exfoliate the area 2-3 times per week.  We sell soap and a mitt which provides better exfoliation then store-bought luffas. Additionally, please moisturize the treatment area between treatments.  This will help the hair grow back in such a way that the sugar can easily grasp and remove the hair for a better experience.

Sugaring paste can be applied over missed hairs

The sugaring paste is very gentle and can be placed right over an area that was recently sugared but missed some hairs, without fear of much irritation. Surprisingly, temporary results can turn into permanent results over time with consistent sugaring (every 3 weeks).

Sugaring hair length should be 1/16th of an inch or the length of a grain of rice when Sugaring

When looking at the “ouch factor ” yes, it’s still pulling out hair from the root, but most people find it less painful. Sugaring doesn’t stick to live skin cells like waxing, which means less irritation. The upper lip, chest, bikini, and genital areas rank as the highest pain offenders. Alissa’s advanced techniques make for the least painful experience.

Why choose Sugaring hair removal?

Someone experienced can do sugaring quickly with the paste. Large amounts of hair can be removed at once with a fast finish.  It is an easy cleanup without a waxy residue.  Finally, the paste is water-soluble, meaning you can clean off any residue left on the skin with plain water, unlike regular wax.

Should I moisturize the day of my Sugaring Treatment?

No.  Please cleanse and gently exfoliate the treatment area on the day of your appointment.  Do no use lotion or oils on the skin as the sugar can not adhere to the hair follicle for proper hair removal.

About Brazilian Sugaring

Brazilians are the most popular treatment on my menu.  Here’s the low down.  A skilled hand and professionalism go a long way.  Some ask, “why is the first treatment more expensive than maintenance treatment?”  The first time we work together, you will receive a LOT of education.  I set aside extra time with you to do our intake, and then move through this treatment.  Some people need extra time.  Generally, the first time takes longer and requires a very strategic hand and technique on my part.  I don’t believe in rushing you if you aren’t ready.  Then, if you choose to continue, I require you to come in every three weeks for a reduced rate.  This is for the full brazilian only. Honestly, we want your hair length to be 1/16th of an inch.  This makes it easier and more tolerable for you and generally, I am able to go a little quicker.  It’s a win-win.

How long should my hair be to sugar wax?

Your hair should be at least 1/4″ in length, in which the hair will lay flat on the skin. If hairs are still sticking straight out, you should probably wait a few more days. Also, if you are usually a “shaver” your hair should be slightly longer for the best results.

Is my hair long enough to sugar?

The minimum hair length for sugaring is 1/16 inch. This length can be used when there is no time to grow stubble, and smoothness is required "here and now." Only a very dense sugar paste and manual technique can handle short bristles. Not every esthetician will agree to work with a minimum length.

How long do you have to grow out pubic hair before sugaring?

It requires strips to zip off the product. So you still need about 1/4-of-an-inch of length for the sugar to grab onto.

How long does it take to grow 1/4 inch of pubic hair?

If your hair is more than a half-inch long, you should consider shaving it and “starting over.” Then schedule an appointment so that it lands about one full growth cycle out. That is, give the hair 1 to 4 weeks to regrow to about ¼ inch. In most cases, 3 weeks is usually long enough.
