I enjoyed the first person points of view changing between different main characters from chapter to chapter and the reading of Lauren's journal which show the reader the finer details of her horrible husbands affairs. An ending I wasn't expecting wrapped this one up nicely for me. Lots of unlikable characters to steam over made it even better. One note I did make was the use of the old term 'derr brain'. Love old school references!

Carolyn Overington is a favourite author of mine, and in this novel she captures an American setting with ease. Recommended audio read!

The book is set in US which is disappointing for an Australian author with many Australian fans. Even the references to 'Mom' instead of 'Mum' starting on the first page felt like a cop out, I don't understand why she would deliberately seek to have her book unrelatable to such a large part of her fanbase.

The characters are unlikable and her writing here lacks depth. As for the last six pages, I felt a bit like my university lecturers must feel when I'm trying to quickly wind up my essay in a limited time period with limited word count. Not a good look for a book.

The One Who Got Away is an intriguing mystery-thriller that unfolds gradually from four alternate perspectives. The One Who Got Away is an intriguing mystery-thriller that unfolds gradually from four alternate perspectives. This sort of structure has been used fairly widely within the genre, and provides a useful mechanism for an author to build suspense, play with misdirection via the use of one or more unreliable narrators and explore the concept that there is really no such thing as objective truth - everything is perception.
There are seven parts to The One Who Got Away, all comprising a first-person narrative. Four of those parts, including the brief opening part and an epilogue, are told from the perspective of Molly Franklin, a single woman who works in plastic surgery tourism. We first meet Molly as she receives the news that her elder step-sister, Loren Wynne-Estes, has gone missing from a cruise boat in Mexico. Molly arranged the trip, a "second honeymoon" for Loren and her husband David, and together with their father hotfoots it to Mexico to find out what is going on. Meanwhile, David Wynne-Estes returns alone to California, ostensibly to break the news to the couple's five-year-old twin girls. The Franklin family are concerned by David's rather nonchalant behaviour in the wake of Loren's disappearance, and his apparent resignation that she is gone forever. What happened to Loren in Mexico - was her disappearance planned, an accident, a suicide ... or murder?
Interleaved with parts told from Molly's point of view are long sections from three alternate narrators, firstly by Loren herself, in which the reader discovers the tumultuous history of her marriage to David. The remaining parts are related from the perspectives of a television journalist and a circuit court judge, as the ripples from Loren's disappearance reveal a complex web of infidelity, jealousy, financial strain and personal obligation. An epilogue narrated by Molly draws the narrative threads together, finally revealing the stunning truth behind Loren's fate.
While I thought the premise for The One Who Got Away was really interesting, and I generally enjoy multi-perspective narratives (Iain Pears' classic An Instance of the Fingerpost is one of my all-time favourite reads), I felt that the book didn't quite hit the mark in terms of execution. Perhaps that's because I found it difficult to warm to - and hence develop any emotional investment in what happened to - any of the characters. Even the main protagonists struck me as caricatures - seemingly all façade, no real substance. Even allowing for elements of the plot, their emotional reactions seemed wooden and contrived and their individual motivations fairly flimsy. Her plot framework lent author Caroline Overington the opportunity to explore the concept of moral ambiguity within both family and work settings, but I didn't feel this was as fully-realised as it could have been.
While The One Who Got Away didn't blow me away, I can see that it could be a stimulating read for those who love twisty domestic dramas, such as those written by sisters Liane Moriarty, Jaclyn Moriarty and Nicola Moriarty. It's obviously a genre in which Australian women writers are excelling!

Having the story set in the US meant the uniquely Australian flavour of Overington's other novels was also absent. I really hope Ms Overington returns to the type of writing that she does so very, very well because this type of novel does not reflect the exquisite talent she possesses as a writer of fiction. ...more

Nothing fresh or new about the content, including the "twist", which I saw coming from the beginning.

I feel like Overington got the idea for this novel, sat down at her laptop and just typed. There are large sections of the text that feel redundant, simply repeating ideas that have been well-established. The court case at the conclusion felt superficial and unbelievable; a plot device rather than a climactic concluding moment. Information was dropped in conveniently rather than helpfully, leaving me confused and frustrated at times.

This definitely doesn't feel like a fresh exploration of 'la-la-land', but rather a tried and exhausted concept that lacked originality and depth.

For instance, it's clear that this is not written by an American although it is set in California and New York City. There's slip ups in the terminology used ('Barrister' for example), which makes it plain to see that this is an Australian writing from an American perspective. We shouldn't notice such things as readers. If this Aussie reader can spot it, it will be glaringly obvious to American readers.

Additionally, (and I see that others observed this too), while the different viewpoints were fascinating in terms of what they revealed about the plot and the relationship between Loren and David, the characters all seemed to have the same voice despite being extremely different people. Physical characteristics of the characters weren't described until well after the plot had been established (we learn what Loren looks like on page 60 & David more properly on page 139) which throws you off when you've had to compensate for what you haven't been told up until that point.

I wish I didn't have a law degree sometimes because so many things were wrong that again threw me out of the characters' world because I knew certain things were impossible.

And lastly I don't find the ending believable. I don't want to give away spoilers. It just seemed like something thrown out there for shock value rather than character consistency.

The plot engrossed me, even though I feel it's trying to jump on the Gone Girl bandwagon, plus I feel it heavily borrowed from the real life Baden-Clay case in Australia (something else that made it feel unAmerican. I found myself reading details I'd seen on the Australian news).

It would be much easier if I didn't like this book at all but I did like a fair bit of it. I'm glad that I read it, don't regret buying it and think that it has enormous potential, with proper editing and amendments, to be something hugely popular and successful. I don't want it to seem like I hated this book because I don't. I just think we all need a bit of constructive criticism from time to time to reach our full potential. Especially in this instance, where there is so much potential there.

Having read all of the author's previous books, I was waiting for the finale and it didn't disappoint. Molly's stepsister, Loren disappears presumably overboard on an attempted second honeymoon cruise. Her husband has admitted to an affair, financial trouble, and committed to stand trial for Loren's murder.

From different perspectives the story unfolds, leaving you guessing all the way to the end. An enjoyable and entertaining read.

But what really happened to Loren?

Billed as a psychological thriller along the lines of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, Caroline Overington's The One That Got Away is a disappointment, lacking all their finesse, intrigue and well-developed characters.

Overington's writing felt juvenile, flat and uninteresting. The plot was dull and the characters, rather than feeling real and vivid, felt a calculated effort from Overington. The reactions of Loren's step-sister and father felt like a shrill hysteria. Yes, they should and would be hysterical in those circumstances, but it felt over the top and shrill and ultimately unpleasant.

The choice to present the story from the POV of two characters we don't normally see – the journalist interviewing the family and the judge presiding at the trial – was interesting but it felt strange as they were never invested in the case.

All up, a disappointment.

They have twin daughters, a lovely home, lots of help. Could life be any better? What could possibly go wrong? One day, Loren is handed a note by another parent outside the school gate. And that note changes Loren’s life. David has been cheating on her. A second honeymoon cruise, to Mexico, is planned to try to save their marriage. But Loren goes missing from the cruise. Is it suicide, or is it murder? Suspicion immediately falls on David.

This story is told from the perspective of a number of different characters including Loren, her step-sister Molly, David, a television interviewer and the trial judge before whom David finally appears. These different perspectives add both detail and complexity to the pictures we form of Loren and of David. But how reliable are they?

Once I picked this novel up I was keen to find out how it would end. What had happened to Loren? Why on earth did she marry David in the first place? Especially when she’d been warned about him before they were married. I kept reading. Neither of the main characters had any great appeal for me, but the story kept me turning the pages. Right until the end. And it’s here, without spoilers, that I confess that I did not like the ending. It works, but I didn’t like it. Why didn’t I like it? Again, without spoilers, it’s too neat.

I’d still recommend the novel though, to readers who like dark thrillers. Ms Overington has written a novel that seems to twist its way out of some of the stereotypical assumptions that I (and possibly others) made at the beginning. Just who is ‘the one who got away’?

As we dissect a number of unreliable narrators and are given second hand information, it's up to the reader on which person bears the truth - and who's telling the lies.

I read this thriller in one sitting, which is a credit to the ease of reading even through the multiple point of views. While the start and middle of the novel delivers endless twists and turns, some which had me gasping in delight, the latter half of the novel dwindles particularly when you hear from the stepsister Molly and the preceding court case. I also felt it was rather rushed at times, particularly where it skips over the wedding and some of the hazier details in Loren's journal.

While the narrative is certainly filled with twists and turns, delivered in order to shock the reader, the lack of foreshadowing made some of these twists rather convenient. Because we are only given a few chapters from each perspective, it's hard to see anything coming outside of what we're given. I would've liked to hear more about the development of the ending and how this came about. It was also glaring that we never see things from David's perspective, outside of his interview with the journalist.

Scandalous, thrilling, filled with deceit, lies and sexual intent, The One Who Got Away is a quick, shocking thriller that had me glued to its pages. While it starts to fizzle out towards the ending until the very few pages, I still found it to be a quick and satisfying read with limited depth and development.

I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved they way it was told from different perspectives it really allowed the story to build up gradually to a point where you are practically screaming "I need to know what happens; now!".

I resisted the urge to skip ahead to the end so I could find out what happened, but it was hard. When I finally read the last page, I was in total shock and went back and reread the last chapter just to make sure I hadn't read it wrong. I loved the way the book kept revealing secrets to the very last line.

I really struggled not to give up on reading this one. The relationship between the two main characters, David and Loren wasn't believable and I found some of the dialogue between them in the early stages of the relationship a bit cringy. For example, in the restaurant in reference to the female waitress:

"If she's on the menu, I get to taste her first."

Cringe! It's like that awful '50 shades' style failed attempt at risqué banter that does not resemble anything anyone even remotely 'cool' would say in real life.

It was longer than it needed to be and I felt like I had to sit through the same long winded recount of the beginning til present play by play of the relationship twice - once from Loren and then straight after by David without much variation in the story.

I finally started enjoying it towards the end and then suddenly it was over. The 'twist' at the end seemed far fetched and rushed.

I gave it two stars because I managed to stick it out to the end rather than giving up all together so I figure that is worth more than one star.

While this was an interesting and enjoyable enough read I was sorry, at its conclusion, to find that yet again I had found a much hyped book had left me somewhat underwhelmed. It would be impossible to approach a book of this kind without expecting there to be a twist at its end and although I did not precisely pick the twist I was on the right track. An ordinary story too centred on sex.

2.5★ I'm not sure about this one - the story was interesting, but the characters were so unlikeable. At first, I wondered whether it was just the narrator's accent, but in the end, I decided that the female characters, Loren and Molly, were probably meant to sound rather Gen-Y-ish - entitled and self-absorbed. It got a little better after Loren's journal entries finished, or perhaps I just got a bit more drawn into the story. This was a disappointing read. All the characters were unlikable from the inane, needy wife to the pushy sister and father, and sexual predator husband. I was tossing up whether to give up on the book since it was so tiresome to read about the wife's outrage over her husband's affair when it was clear from the outset that he was always going to be that kind of man. I only stuck with it because I was then presented with the revelations of the husband's salacious sexual antics and business dealings. From this point I thought the plot was going to become more interesting and complex with the introduction of incriminating footage of "big fish". This wasn't to be and the remainder of the book fell back to cliches about showy rich people, fractured relationships and one too many plot set ups. ...more

"This book is OK, not a classic but keeps you interested and there is a substantial twist at the end. Would make a great light read to pass the time or on a long flight etc.

What I like most about the novel is the way it is carved into parts. Each part is told 'first person' by a central character in the book - the victim, the victim's step sister, the accused, the judge etc. Cleverly by doing this Overington has been able to put across all sides of the argument without having to have a long and drawn out court case where all angles are argued.

I also enjoyed the way a second crime was introduced and all involved admitted to their part (or do they really?) This really muddies the waters on what verdict should be passed with the central crime. In some way
s the story tries to look at class and gender discrimination and I found those points were sometimes pushed too hard. Although they are apparent in the story and the town that it is set in they really don't play a part in the overall plot."
